Dual Strike PCB now with EX Strike PCB - http://www.arcadeforge.de

Ah, OK. I suppposed it was there based on the 8bit PINC register…

Ahh, cool. Got to visit the radio shack the next days

Sorry if this has been asked before but it is possible for the dual strike to piggyback a TE pcb while keeping BOTH usb cables intact? i.e. have one usb cable for ps3 and have the original TE usb cable for xbox360? Also, is it possible for Start+Select to activate the home/guide button?

This should present no problem (anyone please correct me if I’m wrong), as then both PCBs work independently.

Yes this can be activated in the configuration mode.

Jep, just keep the xbox360 usb cable and output an additional dual strike usb cable. Thats all

Thanks for the replies IvIePhisto and bencao! I’m confused about the last part of this guide, where it says “Connect Dual Strike to USB Cable”. I’m guessing that’s optional right? Can’t i just buy a usb cable with a type B connector on one end?! (rather than using the cable that was cut off the original pcb)

You’re right, just use a new cable if that suits you more

I wanted to share my compact stick that I just finished. It is a SMD Dual Strike Dual Modded to a DB-25 connector.

I have the SMD Dual Strike wired to the DB-25 port. I have a DB-25 USB cable that I wired to the 4 pins. Pictured is the USB cable attached to the back port. This one goes directly to my PS3 or PC.

When I want to use the stick with Xbox 360, I plug in the DB-25 extension cable to a xbox 360 project box. Or use whatever project box I have for what ever system.

Since I have a lot of project boxes and project box sticks, I’ve come to just stick with this wiring pinout for all of my project boxes. Ignore the stuff on the right. I use DB-25 because DB -15 isn’t enough If I want a 11 button controller, and in this case the extra left over ports made it possible to add the SMD Dual Strike. Also I have a Voltage out pin for using the DB-25 as a dual modding connector.

Here is the Messy insides.

I inserted wires through the little hole in the quick disconnect and soldered to the flat backside opposite of where you insert the terminals. The PCB is tucked in below the MK button.

Hey rtdzign. Great work. I like your woodcraft skills. Awesome job  which wood do you used?

Birdseye maple for front and back and Padauk for the sides. MDF Core.

The wood looks very smooth. Looks like 2000er Sanding paper…

Between Rub on Poly coats I sand from 220-400-800-1200 for the first 3 coats, then dropped the 220 and did 400 to 1200 for the next 2, then used spray poly, sanded again and then one more coat of rub on poly.

Hey lads, sorry for all the questions but I want to be sure of a few things before going ahead with a dual mod! I’m looking at IvIePhisto’s great guide. I’m wondering:

  1. In the final picture it’s clear that the buttons and directionals are not connected to the dual strike itself (screw-in terminals) but are connected only through the 360 pcb. Does that mean that even when the stick is being used on a ps3, the connections are going through the 360 pcb?! If so, that is amazing!

  2. In the guide it says to cut away the 360 usb cable close to the pcb (or even desolder it). But could I not cut the usb cable a few inches away from the pcb, keeping the red/white/green/black cables connected to the pcb and then joining them to the relevant ribbon cable using a terminal block? Could there be any issues here with voltage? It seems unnecessary to de-solder those wires and then to solder other wires back onto the same spots!

  3. My last question is with the gounds. There is the ground wire coming from the stick and the combined ground wire coming from the buttons. They don’t have to be connected in any way do they? Or does the 360 pcb do that job itself so that the only ground i need to join with the ribbon cable is the one from the usb cable?

Again, sorry for the questions! I think this is a great pcb and once I’m confident that I fully understand everything I will be ordering one.

I’m just going to answer one question.

The Directionals on the Xbox 360 PCB are connected to Dual Strike.
And directly too.

It is the ribbon cable.
If you look, you see that there are wires stuck in the connector.

Directionals are the black wires on TE PCB.

It is done the solderless way shown by ShinJN.

Okay, answering another question.

You just need one Ground wire from TE PCB to Dual Strike.

Thanks for the quick reply jdm. Yeah I understand and am planning on doing that solderless trick in ShinJN’s video, I just find it amazing that the connections are going through the 360 pcb even when used on the ps3! Unlike a chimp where you have wires connecting directly to the screw terminals on the board

Previous post deleted!

NP

It’s a parallel circuit, they are connected to both (see herefor more information).

Of course you can do it anyway you want, the important thing is to connect the USB lines from Dual Strike connectors to the TE PCB. It’s just a nice way of connecting the PCBs using the piggyback connector, but you could also use the wires of the original cable and either solder them to the Dual Strike or solder them to the piggyback connector.

On the TE PCB all ground wires of the joystick and the buttons come together, it’s also a parallel circuit.

Hope that answers your questions, but don’t hesitate to ask more, if you’re unsure about more things

Thats great IvIePhisto! I think i have all the information I need now. Here goes!

Edit: actually, one last question! According to this there are 5 wires inside the usb cable (two black). When you say black wire in your guide which one are you referring to? The thin one or the thick one?

in the USB cable, BOTH black wires should be connected to ground. the thick one is just the cable shielding with a piece of heatshrink over it.

Actually I soldered this cable to the shielding of the plug and I think that’s the best way (as on the host these to grounds might not be connected). I think dogworth’s solution should work, but my solution might give better shielding IMHO.

By the way, I made some updates to my tutorial based on your feedback, animaX, thank you :wgrin:

Just to let you guys know, I had a great (?) transaction with Jochen. Ordered 27 boards from him in bulk, and stupid USPS or German DHL screwed up and sent my package to New York (I live in WA state). Anyway, the package went back to Germany and Jochen IMMEDIATELY sent me a refund.

Great guy, incredibly honest.

Okay, I see what you thinking now.

The Directions and Buttons are connected to both Xbox 360 TE and Dual Strike though.
Not just one as you thought.

It is same as Dual Mod with Cthulhu, Multi-Console Cthulhu, ChImp, using the unlabeled holes.
