Well, finally in 2000, we were planning on motivating a huge group of gamers from Connecticut to attend the East Coast Championships, which would be my first out-of-state major. But then something tragic happened: a few months before, Tee Carter was murdered in a drive-by shooting in a horrible part of Bridgeport. It hit the community in CT pretty bad, and at that time a lot of players decided to quit because they felt like the player who had the best chance to ever do anything and represent Connecticut was gone for good.

For me, the loss was devastating, but I used it in a different way. I promised to myself that I wasn’t going to let CT die and that I would make it my personal agenda to go out of state and finally do something someday. Tee couldn’t represent my state anymore, but I was more than able to. Tee had always said he thought I was the one in CT who had the most potential, and I really took that to heart.

DSP is madd boss on this. Much respect.

Yes, Clayton is correct. The main event at Ohio was the teams, and people left after that was done. 60 people for teams, 45 for singles.

Interesting interview. I think every community needs someone like Phil…someone who constantly is pointing out potential mistakes and wrongdoing and hyping up events. He may not always be right, but he gets people thinking.

Someone needs to make a street fighter for the computer and just hook up a controller, and make some ladders and shit. I bet that would bring in LOTS of money, and a 50x bigger community.

Before you go and fucking flame over SF for a computer, realize that’s a PC gamer that before now probably could have cared less, now wanting more money and a larger fighter community and advocating leagues/ladders stepping in.

are you the same shortround from team3d (took a look at your title and sig), if so let’s talk. I think for a while there has been an FPS bias there (but that’s true of most american pro gaming leagues/sites) but I can assure you it’s rapdily changing.

Heh. I liked the interview. DSP is usually spot on about stuff. I think he’s kinda off base about the Cannons taking 5 years to get major sponsorship. I mean… no one else has pulled it off. Besides, Last year they tried the MLG thing. Year before that was the first time we had G4 coverage (as lame as that was)

No hate intended here, Phil, but I find the article fairly surprising. In the two issues you discussed, Tekken DR and Guilty Gear Slash, you revealed a lot of “behind-the-scenes” stuff that forced your hand into unfavorable decisions and justified why the choices were made. And largely, you painted yourself as the victim in a lot of these scenarios.

It’s with that in mind that I wish you would tone down the cries of foul play to the Cannons and the Evo staff in general. I mean, if you asked the opinion “of the community”, as you always keep telling us to do, wouldn’t that have make Tekken DR a given? But you chose to go regular Tekken, despite that being aginst the community, and in the end Tekken was dropped altogether.

It’s good that you continue to question Evo staff and keep us on our toes. But you have to undertand that there are a whole lot of “behind-the-scenes” circumstances that we aren’t going public with that forces our hand into some decisions as well for the past few years. I much prefer the King of Hype over the King of Hate. Feel free to question our decisions, but to continually attack the staff as “ruining the community” or that the community is in the wrong hands 'cause of the Evo staff and such has grown far too overbearing.

Now that you’ve ran ECC, I can only imagine you now what it’s like being staff and the difficulties coming from it. Having gone through your Tekken DR and Guilty Gear Slash dramas, I would think it would allow you to be a bit more sympathetic to our causes.

Anyhow, that’s all. In the mean time, though, keep up the fight on the EC over there.

A big problem with a lot of the first EVOs, and last year’s EVO, was that there was really no real opportunity for casual play. What you have to realize when you’re running one of these events is that not everyone who attends has aspirations of glory…but a LOT of players would like to just show up and play new people from all over the country. This is a crucial part of any event that must be provided.

I really hope this issue is addressed in future Evo’s.

We had one day of casuals at best. Even then we were getting kicked off machines left and right. Let’s not even bring up the horror of day 2.

I mean, think of a wrestling Pay-Per-View event: why can’t we have entrance music for the top 8 players, with video packages, pyro, and other crazy stuff? Chances are people would fork out some cash just to attend an EVO-like event even if they don’t play, if they get to see some high-level gameplay in addition to some other entertaining stuff.
