Excellent thread. Should be really useful for me.

After months of sketching and brainstorming ideas in my spare time, I think Iām getting really close to the style and design for the protagonist of my story. There have been drastic changes in my style considering what the story is about and who this character is as a person, but things are coming along.
Iām glad that I can look at this sketch days after making it and still like what I see.

That crispy linework though. Mmmf.
How long have you been doing art stuff?
(ā¦sheās cute, lol)
Been drawing since childhood. Took breaks here and there for sports and games, but art is about the best thing I do.
Iām a careful traditional artist, so that explains the relatively clean lines. I sketch everything with H graded pencils and go over them with darker pencils like HB and Bs. I always keep a good eraser by me to help smooth out the lines without leaving any marks behinds (unless Iāve already gone over with a dark pencilā¦ I can do better in waiting for the right time to put down the H pencils lol).
Any tips on hands and feet ?
Also any help with āimaginedā lighting? Like being able to draw where shadows would be if you planned having the light source coming from above or below?
When you look at a picture or subject its easier to do the shading. But just off your head / imagination its so hard saying āthe cheek would get shading here if the light source was here.ā Professionals seem to have this down even when working from imagination
It helps to understand anatomy, which is why Iām taking figure drawing classes.
With that being said, a neat technique to use to help your brain know which areas to shade would be to lightly draw in a small āsunā or lightbulb on the piece. You can work off of that to help figure out what to shade, but the intensity of the light will have to be determined by what would make sense to you.
It doesnāt hurt to study other artistsā work to see how they do their shading, but again, knowing anatomy helps a bunch even when drawing cartoon/ manga characters. If I get the chance Iāll shade my sketch of Helen (my character from a few posts ago) to give you an example.

My drawing of Ultimecia from Final Fantasy
Notice how theres definition but not āshading.ā Theres a lil but thats just by habit or memory, not because theres a consistent light source. I want to be able to shade what would realistically be lit or unlit according to a constant light source
I fucking love the 3S artwork.
I draw but Iām shit. When I get good enough I might show you guys.
It doesnāt matter if you are good at drawing or not in the face of message boards. Thereās always room for improvement too.
If youāre willing to improve, however, then itās best to show what youāve got to people and ask for critiques and advice. Youāll be required to do this in college art classes (even my high school studio teacher hosted them).
Not in pencil. Carry on.
I agree the 3s is my fave because its realism mixed with the anime style.
All capcom artists also seem to possess āeffectiveā shading. Just in the line work they do enough to imply this is where the face dips and this is whats lit and whats not.
I shaded my character drawing. You guys can find it in the same post and I left both pictures there to compare the differences.
Even though I used some cel-shading, the ideas on where to shade are the same as other techniques.
@Neesa Iām astounded that I was the one summoned here and not you. Neat stuff.
Haha. Itās no big thing. Only a few people know that I draw.
=P
whoa, ppl drawing on SRK? thats cool. Hereās a few sketches
