Double Dragon 2 "Wander Of The Dragons" XBLA remake

Sheeeeit, the new Turtles in Time wasn’t THAT bad. I enjoyed playing thru it a few times. On the other hand, this game looks like a joke. All they had to do was an HD version of the old cartoonish visuals (*but I’m thinking of only the NES version; I never played the arcade one), and that would’ve been good enough for me.

…man, the NES version was one of my favorite games of the 8 bit era. It was way better than parts 1 or 3. That whole franchise went off the cliff shortly after that though… remember the goofy shit Double Dragon became later, around the mid-90s? There was a fighting game at some point, an unbelievably terrible cartoon, and everything about it just got exponentially worse as time went on…it was way, way off course from the simplicity of the original concept, and everything looked silly and stupid.

It’s for the best. It sucked just like the first arcade version (considering how bad they were, it’s surprising there were home releases). The combat was terrible: you could NEVER approach an enemy head-on, you could only punch at a certain speed, and the enemy could and would always toss a quicker punch in between YOUR punches, and once they punched you ONCE, you were gonna eat a series.

Your punch speed: Whap-whap-whap-whap
Enemy speed: W-w-w-whap

On top of that, all the cool new moves you got in 2 and 3? USELESS. You’d either get punched out of them, or the enemy wouldn’t even stick around for it, then come back to your plane on the screen and…you guessed it: W-w-w-whap! The arcade versions were clearly designed to be so unfair that you put in more money every 2-4 minutes, even if you approached from a slightly different plane, due to the cpu’s ability to abuse your throttled, inferior punching speed.

The NES releases actually made the games playable and fun.

Yeah, that happened to my MK3, those mother fuckers.

As for that trailer, ugh. Seriously, DD is probably one of the most underrated franchises. Sure, the third one was life changing for me:

as a kid I would NEEEEEVVVVEEEERRRRR get video games outside of Christmas or when I passed a year of school. Once, and only once, my dad just spontaneously asked if I wanted a game, and I get to the video game store, and WHAM I see DD3, and I remember my fond memories of Double Dragon, so I bought that. Then I found out how ass fuckingly brutal that game was (you get ZERO lives or continues, the first character you unlock is a useless fat fuck, and I dont think anybody ever actually beat the game ever). Seriously, it’s the equivalent to actually running out your front door and fighting every single person you meet. I never beat it, and never looked back. TO THIS DAY, I have always looked forward to somebody making the ultimate beat-em-up via the awesomeness of Double Dragon, but this…this is not that game

Yet another reason why XBLA is 99% a joke

That’s not my DD2. Get that crap outta here.

One of my childhood favorites got raped.

only interested in a NES DD2 remake with no new BS.

This post is perfect.

I take it you missed out on Super Double Dragon, or atleast got a bad impression of it by playing the [harder] US version. Return Of Double Dragon is often overlooked as that game is the best in the series [though it’s still unfinished as I pointed out earlier]. Atleast there, they gave Billy and Jimmy a difference in moves [for instance, Jimmy has different punches than Billy and atleast in the Japanese version, he has a different roundhouse kick as well].

I would prefer Return Of Double Dragon to be remade ala a more “complete version”. At the very least, do a straight up port of it since it was based on a later build of the American version

You guys said something about Double Dragon 2 in here? I don’t see it anywhere.

Return of Double Dragon is some great shit. This Double Dragon 2 “remake” is just shit.

Yeah, I only got the US version here. It was still pretty good, but I can’t deny that DDIII didn’t ruin it for me :frowning: I still seriously have faith that they could make a good NEW Double Dragon game.

I don’t have faith in that, unless Atlus is in charge of another remake. Double Dragon Advance was pretty good.

Everything Atlus does is great. This remake looks like garbage, and all I wanted was a GRAPHIC update to an old game, or make the game flow a little faster. I say no thanks to this 3d fighting force garbage.

what i am learning is very few of us must have played the arcade dd2

Looks like Turtles in Time Re-Shelled, but much, much worse. To be fair, Re-Shelled wasn’t terrible, but it certainly didn’t WOW me like Bionic Commando: Rearmed did.

Now THAT was a remake!

I’m surprised no one has commented on the part in the trailer where Billy imitates the pose Bruce Lee does on the billboard.

I honestly didn’t watch it very long. I was too disgusted, I just shut it off.

I always daydream a Double Dragon 2 remake based on the NES version, not as a side-scrolling beat 'em up but a full on 2D platformer (no moving into/out of the background), with combos and special moves weaved into the engine. Think X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse.

I say this because even though the NES versions differed from the arcade, I always thought the NES titles were superior, and despite needing two buttons to jump I loved the levels that weren’t purely “keep beating shit up until the hand points you onward.”

The GBA Double Dragon remake was the motherfuckin’ truth, though. Except stages 5 (based on the boring forest) and 6 (an even more boring cave). Everything else was ballin’.

Saw it, didn’t even care.

Whaaaaaaa?? When is this coming out???

For real. DD2 is one of my favorite NES games OF ALL TIME! I’ll still boot it up when I’m drunk and want something to beat on. But this game doesn’t look anything like it, so I don’t know why they’re calling it a “remake.”

It blows dead bear. I don’t know how the wonderfulness that is Double Dragon 2 NES came out of that boring game. The arcade version of the first Double Dragon is the shit though!
