Starting my second year of Savate two weaks ago, still loving it. The hands are used the same way as traditionnal boxing (even if we use them for different purposes) and the legs are used for whip kicks (fouetté) to start, even if you have other kicks.
I did a years of judo when I was a kid as France has a strong federation and judo is often seen as a good sport to help children improve their self physical awareness.
I have some basic knowledge of that art but wasn’t it originally a naval art where it was taught to french sailors back in the Galley days? I could be thinking of something else but I could have sworn it was something along those lines.
Thats awesome! I think all women should be amazons. Fathers give your daughters the option, any martial art a woman should learn at least one.
personally if i have a daughter its gonna be bjj…at least til she’s 18. all the positions a girl might end up in, in danger are in bjj. it just makes too much sense to have them train it.
Karate, kickboxing, sambo, knife fighting, archery, and gun training for my daughter. It’s interesting maxx put that video up because I saw one of a 19 year old girl who opened up her own dojo in Japan.
i think you guys are going a lil overboard. i barely had time for tkd in hs lol…i dunno how you guys are gonna be training ninjas unless they are homeschooled.
Yes the kicks are from french sailors from marseille. They used heavy shoes and used to fight by bear on the rail. It was then mixed with other fighting ways to become what it is now. It’s getting more and more popular these days because it’s also seen as something elegant and good for health as it’s a very complete sport.
Ah ok so I was thinking of the right thing. Sometimes my brain is abit jumbled and random stuff appears. So if the kicks were invented for maritime combat then does it take punches more from a traditional boxing background for the hands or has it taken in any asian influenece and incorporated different take down or throw techniques/joint locks as it veers more into the realm of sports?
Wouldn’t it just be better to put her into a bodyguard class at that point or buy the dvds until she can be old enough to attend such a class? I think it would be easier at that point. Or better yet Bujinkan or Toshindo as those schools tend to focus on aspects like that and are more available to people of all ages or weight classes. The latter I recommend as Ive met the head instructor numerous times and he is always helpful with any questions you may have. Bujinkan I know by name and rep and there is some similarities but head masters I can’t say I’ve had dealings with them. A few lower ranked guys who were pretty helpful though. Anyways food for thought.
I’m teaching my daughter break falls now. My wife is still learning how to administer chokes and locks from various positions. I’m actually gonna buy my wife some gloves and pads so she can practice her punches and kicks. My daughter is almost 3 but she is already trying to get me in pro wrestling moves. But yeah my wife and daughter will be ridiculous when I’m done with em lok. Can’t have anything happen to my babies lol.
It’s very traditionnal for the punches, almost the same as traditionnal english boxing except you almost never “hug” your opponent. It’s a kind of “lighter” way of using english boxing. For ex, the left jab is not strong at all, you mainly use it to blind your opponent or to start offense, or, in our nerd language, to poke your opponent and make him make a mistake. The fact you can use your legs adds a footsies component to the traditionnal boxing, and if you are tall like me, you will be boxing faaaaar from your opponent and it’s very weird when you start getting it, you feel like you are way too far and have trouble keeping the distance (as in street fighter :'D).
You don’t punch in the legs, only kick them, and you don’t have the right to break articulations like the knee. One of the most important things in Savate is to step before you kick. You step a lot to the right or left and adjust the distance to kick your opponent with your shoes, or you will be in front of him and too close, and will be punched in the face or get a kick inside your standing leg and fall to the ground. You try to start by foot and finish by kick, you step a lot to dodge an opponent and counter hit him, you always try to start offense High and finish mid/low or the opposite.
I am no expert since it’s only my second year, but I enjoy it a lot as it’s very technical and the difference of distances between kicks and punchs permits you to attack a lot or outrange your opponent.
I posted this in the boxing thread.
So I just got back from my first boxing session. This is the most brutal workout I have ever had. One hour of cardio is considered a warmup lol. Oh well here are some pics of where I train.
Man that looks f’n sweet. I don’t get jealous of people I just try to beat someone, but I’ll admit Im jealous of that it looks great man. Again good luck with the training.
Ah ok thankyou for the information. I may ask questions from time to time as martial arts from every country is something I am passionate about that and if all of a sudden I recall something I’ll want to clear up what I am remembering. Thankyou again for the info.
I want to take some martial arts sometime in the future. There are different styles in my area so what do I need to aware if the school is legit or not?
I would say find an art or arts you might be interested in. Go to the various schools/dojos and talk to the main instructor. Make sure they tell you about the pricing.
You may learn an antiquated tech. But unless it is to score points in competition in my exp. You will be taught Kata then sparring and unless you bring up to the instructor that you have an interest in form ect. style of comp. then no you will not learn anything not practical, at least you shouldn’t. You should learn basics and self defense and be given time to spar/try out what you have learned on other students.
