Do pro FG players generally have regular jobs?

Hevad Khan too. He was the driving force behind most of Marvel 2’s biggest money matches, in terms of both organization and financing.

I hope so. Otherwise when the spotlight is gone (which would happen around 30 I would assume) they’ll have some fun explaining what they’ve been doing the last decade at a job interview.

Hahahahahaha these two are amazing… thanks for posting.

Serious answer: All but perhaps a very very select few (and by “few” I mean maybe JWong) have jobs or are full time students or are supported by their parents or their girlfriends or boyfriends or they deal drugs or something.

I’ve considered becoming a drug dealer and just playing SF and recording music full time. But I’m probably not going to do that.

Not entirely true. We pretty much use the money to recoup for the venue, equipment purchased/rented, and/or used for prizes/bonus pot. Most TO’s aren’t making from hosting tourneys, otherwise they’d be running them every every week/month. If it isn’t a Major, players don’t make much from winnings unless they place top 3 in more than just one game. They spend money on venue/entry fees and then gas to get to the event. Don’t forget that people need to eat, so most of the time, everyone goes out to eat after a tourney, and the tourney money is used for food, and some offer to treat a group of players (usually the crowd they came down with) so they aren’t left with much afterwards.

Do pro FG players generally have regular jobs?

I still haven’t finished my blog, “Pro Gaming is a Part-time Job”, which talks about cost of living based on geographic location, tournament payout structure, and more. For fighting games, we’re not going to see any to player live off winnings for a while. Even with sponsors. Now, each sponsor is different, but we do know that most of them cover entry fee and sometime travel cost and accommodations. Some don’t cover anything, but will pay you each time you wear their shirt at an event.

You want to know how they manage their time? Well, most of them that aren’t going to school or have full-time jobs are able to put in more hours to train that those who do go to school/work full-time and it shows. They know how to utilize their free time and allocate certain hours towards training and the rest towards rest/leisure. Something that is inevitable is life. The older we get, the more responsibilities we pick up. Kids, husbands/wives, car/house payment, child support/alimony, student loans, etc… So people have to get real jobs. The ONLY pro gamer I know that doesn’t have to work and pretty much set, is Johnathan Wendel aka “Fatal1ty”.

I could have easily said, “Yes”, but thought this would help.

@Rotendo

HOLY SHIT THAT IS THE FANATIQ TOAN MM GUY? HAHAHAHAHA

All I said was that there exist players and TO’s that make money off this. People not making a living off small scale tournaments in texas isn’t news to me

Indeed they are. You guys don’t think the Evo organizers aren’t making money? Or the Level Up Live guys? You’d be amazed how much cash they rake in. Now, are they making enough to make it a full-time job? No. But it’s one HELL of an extra source of income.

Yeah, I know. I should have stated that some TO’s do make money off of this, lol. That’s my mistake, lol.

Doesn’t J Wong still have his job in Nexon (which recently were rumored to be attempting to buy EA) that he’s extremely proud of?

Fanatiq said on LI Joe’s stream that he basically lives off money matches. Best to take that with a bucket of salt, though (pun intended?).

I never knew he had that job or any job (although I’m not shocked) - I just felt like if any American could make a decent living from fighting games, it would be Justin Wong.

Thus, it’s official - if Justin Wong has a “regular” job, then the answer to the original question is “no.”

its funny cause most of the players are either living with a roommate or their parents.Triforce lives with his father he said but just rented the “ARC” so others can help pay for the bills.Guess that whole sucka working a 9 to 5 thing bit him in the ass

to be fair my point was pretty moot

Pro gamers do not have jobs. They live in mansions and have daily hot tub parties with girls in bikinis.

The girls are universally overweight, but they carry it well.

No lie, its been a while since i actually have seen an ugly girl gamer.

It’s amazing to me that the majority of the community has become so disconnected that most people don’t know that pretty much 99% of the players have regular jobs if they still aren’t in school.

I aim to please. Okay let’s be real here this is no big money in fighting games right now. The only folks collecting the big checks are the SC2 players. Most of the FGC is busy holding each other down. I have even heard folks say a T.O shouldn’t profit from a tourney.

Also to add most pro players in videogames are college grads or are attending college.

idk man the stream was going crazy when they seen Chris G’s Girl on stream the other day, they even gave her name (wait for it)…She. Honda

Yep. True story.
