I think we’d see a big improvement in a lot of commentary if people learned to stop saying gibberish during long combos, and rather just actually think about what to say for once.
Victor…
I’m a fan of Juicebox commentary.
I enjoyed it when he was commentating on Blackskillz Deejay against Velic1raptor Gouken at Evo2012. T’was informative and fun.
as long as they aren’t so bad you have to mute the stream (T13 guy comes to mind) then it doesn’t make much difference to me
Fixed
I’ll add Aris and Tom Brady to the list of best commentators. Love hearing these guys on the mic.
the best commentator is dogface
sadly, fighting games aren’t worthy of them!
whats so bad about having to mute them out? You’d rather have no commentator for anyone so you don’t have to click the mute button?
And how about that japanese commentator who’s always super hyped in casuals, always imitates the sound of special moves, sounds like he’s about to number 2 in tense moments and screams like a little girl whenever someone gets KO’d? Can’t remember his name… Oh right, they’re all like that in japan.
its tricky because anyone who isn’t worried about public speaking thinks they can commentate, but not many ppl actually can commentate. and its about the duo too. trying to carry somebody who isn’t good on the mic or isn’t interested in talking about the match is a real pain in the ass… and even if the guy is on topic that doesn’t mean you’ll get a nice flow back and forth. and even then, if the guy is on topic, into the match, and is knowledgeable he might be cursed with a trebley voice that starts grating after awhile. like Ryan Hunter. guy had lots of knowledge but I could not stand to listen to him, at all. some gus could stand for some vocal coaching just to develop their voice on the mic. if I wasn’t so busy I woulda done that because I don’t especially enjoy my voice either
i’ll be doing my best this weekend at canada cup this weekend. we’ve got james chen… and uhh i dunno who else
spooky is a horrible commentator
there is only dogface
Yipes isn’t a commentator, he’s a fan showing love and having fun while watching the game.
I will take that over any other commentator faking some professionalism on the mic any day of any year of any century.
I don’t put that much stock into fighting game commentary apparently. I’m only bothered when someone is horribly wrong.
If you like commentary, you guys should be thankful people at the event want to talk to thousands of strangers for free instead of playing casuals or kicking it with the people there or watching in the crowd.
I’m fine with no commentary (commentary in another language may as well as be no commentary for me). I’m fine with commentary where they are just joking on the guys playing or whatever and I know a lot of people hate that. “yo be professional” whatever let the TO decide how he wants the commentary for his event.
Kokujin
Ken Bogard
Pretty awesome commentators no one mentioned yet. They’re like unaffected by language barriers because of how lively they are with their commentary.
no commentary = not enjoyable.
that’s like it is, either you’re live there and enjoy the crowd or you need a commentator.
Canadian commentary is intolerable, too much circle jerk dick in all of their mouths
Like, I get it, a little bias is normal since people root for their coasts, but they have that shit on another level
OMG LOOK HES SOOO GOOOD, WE GOT THOSE COM-BOOOOSSSSSSS (drop) WOW DID YOU SEE THAT RESET
another language is fine if you sound like that:

or

that said, TOO MUCH CLOSE.
They can’t commentate they are actors who go by script. They good at what they do but they would flop in any non-scripted event
Just gonna drop Ryan Hunter’s name in here.
I find it’s very easy to lose focus when there’s absolutely no commentary, especially in long sets.
Yipes style works for what he does but all the guys aping him are terrible. comedy that would be bad enough at an open mic night that gets even worse when it is jammed together with FG matches
lmao @ faking professionalism. believe it or not professionalism is what the scene needs to grow. that style of commentary is infinitely more accessible than the typical FGC wannabe gangster garbage, like what we had to put up with watching season’s beatings this year.
you probably too far outside to notice that the scene has stopped growing and is starting to lose some of the ground it gained in 2009-2011. continuing to appeal to the insular nature of the scene will kill it even more surely than the overabundance of FGs coming out. you don’t gotta go full eSports but you gotta cherry pick a few aspects of their presentation to not scare off the kiddies who will form the next generation of players
that wasn’t Canadian commentary, that was a drunk idiot who had no business being on a mic when he’s sober… never mind sauced. fuck nickcam. I still wonder how deep a hole he dug himself to hide in after that godawful performance on the mic and then gettin destroyed by Bee the next day
Bro I don’t care about everyone aping Yipes, I’m purely talking about Yipes. I’ve been enjoying that guy talk over matches since fucking 2002 just standing next to the MvC2 cabinet at Chinatown Fair.
Fake professionalism is what everyone on the mic is doing that hasn’t taken one class on the actual art of sports commentary. A few people make it look good but realistically everyone that gets on the mic is feigning professionalism, save thus that don’t really care about such a thing and just enjoy watching people play the game. Donning a suit and tie and saying: "Nice block, nice dp, nice ‘adjective’ ‘noun’ makes you look like a toy doll with a pull string attached.
Hell, I don’t actually like listening to Ultra David, James Chen, or Juicebox but their goal in doing so is to further knowledge of their respective games, which they continue to do even when the tournament is over. I can respect that, but I would rather take Skisonic and him consistently losing his voice over those three, sorry.
My friend, we are a fad right now, we are not a movement. We are one hell of a fad mind you, and we have done some amazing things, but we’re going to hit a wall in a year or two tops, and things will revert.
So I’m not trying to tell anyone to appeal to the insular nature of the scene, I don’t want the scene to die, and I do not and have never cared for what eSports can do for us.
I fucking love Yipes on the mic, he makes me enjoy the game, he makes me laugh, and that’s all I’m asking for.
Stop trying to pry anything else out of that.
