Diary of a Hopelessly Bad Abel

Zangeif mixup: If you seriously know he’s going to throw, I’d backdash or neutral jump-punish. even though TT beats throw, risking getting back in that mixup if you accidentally time it wrong isn’t worth it. I just try to guess. If he lariats backdash/jump/throw loses, and if he throws so does everything else. If you have breathless it’s a good time to use it.

iirc, lariat is fully throwable.

Correct, unless it’s a PFJC lariat

looked it up, true- So is a TT worth doing against gief on wake-up?
edit: I have a feeling I’m spreading all the wrong info about zangief’s vortex, I haven’t played any in a while- Just don’t get in it?

From what I’ve experienced, if you score a knockdown on Gief then you can dash up and TT Gief and beat all of his options except for backdash or jump, but if you know they will backdash or jump then you can use Falling Sky and catch either one of them, so it is a 50/50. Still, the experienced Giefs will hold up and cancel into Lariat which beats the Tornado Throw (was done in vanilla days, but think this is still true)… So maybe not so 50/50.

The above is good for beating the average Gief. Against good Giefs I have yet to be successful… Snake Eyez comes to mind, golly molly… I swear my shorts were being punished by Lariats, didn’t know what happened after about 20 matches. I would like to see Mike Chow against him so I can take notes, but I fought him before I saw Chow’s write-up. Still the fight felt like a Turtle Gief, he wouldn’t approach you and would hold his ground poking away, I guess I just got outplayed… Hope my cobweb of thoughts makes some sense.

ive said it before and ill say it again, meaty normal throw is #1 vs gief

if he backdashes, youll recover early enough to be able to backdash and avoid his spd(if he does it) and punish with step kick combo

A meaty normal throw? Hmm… but won’t you will eat an SPD with its 2 frame startup/command grab? It still sounds like a gamble, plus one would have to time the meaty exactly every single time to hold a frame advantage. Sounds as risky as any other option considering you can eat an ultra as well.

If that’s the case, you might as well meaty Tornado Throw and still recover in time to backdash if they neutral jump, not sure about backdash but I’ve had plenty of instances where they jump out of my meaty TT and I can still backdash their Ultra when they land. I’ll have to try a few things in Training Mode, got me thinking now.

If the throw’s meaty then it will throw him out of the start-up of the SPD. Shit’s pretty hard to time though. If he does neutral jump a TT a competent gief would headbutt into combo.

yeah. meaty throw will beat all of his reversals except his ultra (and super?)

i thought ive made a video of this hehe, guess not…

normal throw has WAY less recovery than a TT if he backdashed/neutral jump, youre going to eat at least an SPD or a full headbutt combo

as for its difficulty, well you play abel, you should already used to his okizeme setups after all of his untechable knockdown and work around that knowledge in training mode… after a blocked step kick, just mash normal throw (to get the throw out AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE) while preparing to backdash

a lil bit harder though if you can react to whether he backdashes or not, do meaty normal throw, if he neutral jumps, free falling sky for you/ or st.hp xx roll into another meaty normal throw/TT

happy 2012 patch yall

WHHHHhhhhhEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

Wait wait wait… How does meaty normal throw beat Gief’s SPD? Because too many people have been saying normal throw beats his wake-up SPD and I just can’t wrap my head around it.

SPD has no throw invincibility.

Must’ve missed that memo…

its just that spd is 2frame startup. like if you do normal throw and gief does spd at same time, spd wins cuz its one frame faster. It just may seem meaty throw don’t work sometimes(especially online) vs wakeup spd b/c mistiming the throw by like 2 frames…i think 2 frames…not to good with specifics

look up the meaning of “meaty”, and “no throw invincibility”… put 2 and 2 together

you can do it

Uh… so 4?

2012AE sucker

Went to Thursday Night Throwdown last night, a biweekly in the SF bay area at Gamecenter Arcade in San Mateo.

Anywyas I went in asked this random dude Moses to play. Missed like every link lol he bodied me with Dudley and a few other characters like 7-1, I was like “fuuuuuuuuck”

Then this Asian chick came in and sat down and played Sakura against me, I was thinking “OH MY GOD AM I ABOUT TO GET BODIED BY THIS CHICK” and the answer was a resounding “YES”, i have nver been beaten so badly by anyone at all. She played a super defensive style Sakura and it was WAY hard for me to get in, I have a really really big problem with focusing way too much like seriously all the time, and forward dashing after the focuses which is negative frame advantage, suffice to say I got punished for it. She was really really good at blocking my resets, I was not able to get the gimmicks going. I kept looking around like “I WONDER IF ANY OF THESE 10 PEOP<LE RIGHT BEHIND ME WANT TO PLAY” but none of them woudl save me, I kept hopnig someone would ask for next game but it never came man, so I lost 10 in a row LOL

Then finally the dude that runs the place Myung tapped me on the shoulder and asked to get next…MY SAVIOR lol

then he got blown up by her and a couple other people did too so I didn’t feel as bad.

Anyways getting bodied so hard I decided that I wasn’t going to enter the tournament(a decision I ultimately regret) because I felt at that pt that I’d be going 0-2. Instead I just stuck around the entire night and played casuals with people. I played some dude’s Cody and was able to beat him like 65% of the time, he came in 4th overall. In the middle of my matches which him my fingers warmed up or some shit and I was able to hit my combos every god damn time it felt good man

I then played some other ppl in casuals, some guy on Zangief and Guy, there was a little bit of hype from the people behind me because I read the ultra 1 from zangief when he did empty jump to end the round but I did TT just in time so I grabbed him out of it, they were like “HO<LY FUCK” but they thought it was a tournament match lol

Would I do that in a tournament match? let’s be real probably not. Also had some sweet falling sky grabs on Guy when he dashed+wheelkick type thing, it looks so cool.

Then I played El Cubano Loco who is the resident rising star, he usually plays in grand finals, a Vega(claw) player. He just sat down to play me in casuals, I had never played him, I was tbh pretty nervous because like I knew who he was and shit from watching stream and F Champ had given him a lot of credit as being a good player, he usualyl gives f champ a run for his money.

Anyways I had the best footsie game of my life and was able to run good 50/50 mixups on him. I had seen he liked to backdash a lot from watching him play another abel there so I was doign TT into the dash mk roll to get behind mixup and hitting him with the full ELBOW OF GLORY as he backdashed, also got a successful read on a neutral jump by hitting it with FS

He beat me the 2nd game we played but it was really very very close. Much to my surprise I was able to hang with him in both games. Now I’m sure he wasn’t full on focused like he is in tournament matches but I’m positive he wasn’t sandbagging either, but after that he got caled to the stream console to play more tournament matches. Tbh just those 2 games got my confidence way way way way up and I’m feeling pretty good atm

Been grinding like 4 hours a night online on PC, which I have found to generally have more skilled players than PSN(just my experience), feelin like it’s starting to pay off. I am starting to really work on footsies, been using stand MP quite a lot to stuff a ton of shit i really love it man

aww yeh

I know how it works. Just saying I’ve missed the news about SPD not being throw invincible. If it was always like that then even bigger brain fart on my part.
