Dhalsim - YOGUH!

I want to see some footage of Daigo’s Ryu vs Hasake or Gian.

Thanks for doing this Zaspacer. Much appreciated.

First I really suck with Sim. I didnt realize Sim had those supposed advantages against the rest of the cast.

Second if Sim truly does have those type of advantages against the cast why wasnt he winning all the EVO tourneys.

Third I have sooo much to learn.

Not many people really played Sim and only a FEW excelled, that is why he wasn’t winning (from my understaning). I do think his ‘advantages’ are still more theory, to a small degree. I think the Japanese overestimate him a bit, as Boxer and Claw just flat out win more in Japan than Sim has, but Sim is a better overall char? I think practically, Sim is under Boxer and of course Claw.

What I’ve learned in my short span of Sim playing/watching is that unless you know him IN and OUT vs the rest of the cast he is not top tier and loses much easier than if you picked boxer/claw/chun. You must really be a master to have your Sim be at such an advantage vs the other world warriors. High learning curve, but fantastic rewards…

I agree, might just be a case of theory vs. practice. In theory no one should be able to touch Sim. In practice I can’t win with Sim unless I’m using gameshark. I blame lag.

Good luck with that.

I tried and failed to find any such footage.
But if you find it, send it my way and I’ll put it up in a heartbeat.

Well, let’s look at the tale of the tape.

I just sorted through a bunch of 2008 SBO vids.

Gian, Hakase, and Yoshimura all showed up to 2008 SBO… and they all got knocked off somewhere along the way to the Finals.

Hakase got the farthest: Semi Finals.
He lost to… CLAW
But Hakase was smart and made sure to team up with a character that stood the best chance of beating his weakest matchup: Boxer!
… unfortunately, his partner got paired against one of Boxer’s worst matchups: Chun Li.
If only the pairings had been reversed!

Gian got to the 3rd Round. (remember, this is single elimination, so 3rd round is actually very good among elite players)
He lost to… CLAW

Yoshimura got to the 3rd Round.
He lost to… BOXER

(NOTE: Yoshimura also teamed up with FEI LONG… so it’s not like he had much of a safety net)

Claw is recognized (by that chart) to be Dhalsim’s worst matchup.
It was a Claw heavy day, with a Claw/Chun Li team eventually taking 1st, and another Claw player grabbing 3rd/4th.
Bad day to be a Dhalsim player.

Yes, Dhalsim is rated high.
But Claw is rated with less vulnerability (his lowest matchup is a 4.5 while Dhalsiim’s lowest is a 3.5).

You have to weigh in how each character does vs. the top characters.
You have to weigh in that how each character does vs. the low characters may not be pertinent.
And you have to weigh in how valuable an advantage vs. a major advantage is for matchups.

First match

Gian vs Daigo.

Yeah in the team matchups it is very important to have teamates that are able to offset the natural disadvantages of your own char. Sim teaming up with a Boxer, Claw, Chun, Ryu combination is a very good tactic. Sim with Fei is good and fun if you’re friends and thats the chars you play, but to breach that top 4 spot will be an uphill battle. In the end: Too many high (you only need one knockdown) to excellent claws in the tournies really hurts Sim’s chances of being crowned, unless he is VERY careful with who he plays with. I mean Gian, Otochun and Aniken would be an awesome team to see and I’d put money on that line up to make it 1st and surely second.

Great find Shari!

And the whole vid is an ALL STAR cast.

Looks like I need to do some harvesting at
alabamaman12345’s Channel. (I hadn’t checked his or many of my other ST sources in a while)

It’s up on the site now under the Dhalsim section.
The other characters in that vid will have their sections updated in time.

Shirts, Jason Cole, and Alex Wolfe all either won Evo or got like 2nd place. My memory is poor and I’m too lazy to look it up. But Sim’s done well.

Down to the WIRE on that Daigo/Gian match. One mistake cost G. I liked how D opened up with a standing forward kick vs Yu’s Dict.

Cole and Alex definitely won Evo. Shirts… I wanna say he did … but I forget … I’d have to look at the really old Evo dvds. If he didn’t, he came in really close. His O. Sim was unbelievable though. He’d probably make you break your controller.

Okay I keep reading that blanka has such a hard time getting in to Sim. What am I missing. They get in and I am lost. I either get comboed to a dizzy or if I block the combo I get tic bitten. I was looking at Zaspacers chart for ST and it says 7.5 for Sim to 2.5 for Blanka. I did some searching myself of high quality play of sim vs blanka and no way is it this. Anyhow I dont really care about the odds. I just need to know what to do to keep Blanka out.

I must be getting better (lol) against Chun Li’s because now they are starting to turtle more. Even so how do I get the throw after I block her medium jump in kick.

Thanks.

I’ve found that when I KNOW they are trying to tick bite me and I am SPAMMING a noogie/throw, they still almost always bite me (online issue?). I dunno if they are using turbo or what, but this one guy did it OVER and OVER and I am pretty good with reversing Rog and Ken doing this, as it comes out to being 50/50 (which is fine). I read somewhere that the defender who is in blockstun gets frame advantage in this situation… is that true?

Unfortunately blankas tic bite has good range like zangiefs spd. You wont be reversing it if they do it right. Normally they will do a combo where when you block it, it pushes them back a tad where they still can tic bite you and that you can not reverse at all. I’ve accepted that but I need to know how to keep him out period.

First off, don’t use the MP throw when trying to reverse a distance Blanka Bite.
HDR REALLY nerfed the range on Dhalsim’s MP throw, and using it will just get you a 3-frame MP punch that will likely lose to a 0-frame Blanka bite.

Instead stick to either HP throw (if coming out of stun), (non-slide) crouching.MK (if they are trying a walk up and you are not in stun), or accept the bite and block low to avoid a combo or W3pkkEoZGhU#t=0m53s"]slip in a Special to [a little.

Blanka bite is a 99 range vs. Dhalsim’s 94 range](http://nki.combovideos.com/data.html#gauge"[/media) for his HP throw.
Dhalsim does lose at the very extreme of Blanak’s range, but the difference between the two is much less than Blanka’s advantage over many other characters, and so Blanka has a much better chance than vs. other characters of not Biting at the perfect range and allowing Dhalsim a chance to reverse.

Dhalsim’s (non-slide) crouching.MK is the fastest normal move in the game.
It comes out at 2 frames of start-up before the hitting on the 3rd frame.
You want to use this move to counter any walk-ups that are trying to get in range of throws.
Of course, if you are in block stun during their walk-up, this is not an option.

Komoda (Blanka) vs. Gian? (Dhalsim)

0:30 in - block low and take the bite but avoid getting dizzied; after bite Dhalsim is positioned to perform a Super to counter a Blanka toward.jump following the bite. Also, if Blanka tries to combo, Dhalsim’s blocking low will push Blanka back.
0:45 in - Blanka knocks Dhalsim out of air in corner and Blanka follows-up with jumping.toward lockdown. Dhalsim times teleport to escape.
0:53 in - Blanka gets in with jumping.toward lockdown. Dhalsim submits to bite, but gets out a Special move which will at least build Super meter (Dhalsim chooses an upflame Special because while it exposes him to the bite or a sweep, it will not expose Dhalsim to a potentially round ending jump combo and it’s a good meter charge move in ST). Bite lands. Blanka follow-up with a walk-up mix-up (crouching.HK) which Dhalsim responds to with a (non-slide) crouching MK. Moves trade knocking Dhalsim down, but pushing Blanka out to where he can only pressure with a Ball. Dhalsim crouches ready to ward off Blanka walk-in with (non-slide) crouching.MK. Blanka jumps to cross-up Dhalsim, Dhalsim performs (far) standing.LP to evade attack and then MP grabs Blanka.

Komoda (Blanka) vs. Gian (Dhalsim)

6:46 in - Blanka gets in with jumping.toward lockdown, but Blanka hits too high for combo off LK and also lands within Dhalsim throw range. Dhalsim gets MP throw.
7:11 in - Blanka gets in with jumping.toward lockdown, but Blanka is too far out and Dhalsim counters Blanka move/walk-in with (non-slide) crouching.MK to push Blanka back out.
7:36 in - (repeat of 7:11 above)
8:08 in - starts like 7:11 and 7:36 above, but this time Blanka is clever and jumps towards so Dhalsim’s reflex crouching.MK whiffs and allows Blanka to land combo.

Oftentimes eating a bite is just gonna happen.
Better to eat a single bite than leave an opening to get comboed out and lose the round.

And it’s the ability to handle the situation AFTER the bite that really becomes important.
And Gian demonstrates a proficiency toward making sure Blanka’s bite is not followed up with a lockdown Blanka offensive.

If you are asking which moves counter a Blanka jump in when Dhalsim has time to get a move out, there are examples of them in the footage as well. ([close] standing.LP, Super, crouching.LP, teleport, [close] standing.HK, [far] crouching.HP, jump.away.LP, LP fireball, etc.)
However, I did not list them out with timeline reference because I was focusing on when Blanka succeeded in getting past such defenses.

This thread is like an oasis in the desert… :chat:

Yeah Zas that was exactally what I was thinking last night: Crouching MK to get em up off me! Is MP a suitable alt? It seems Gian was using crouching jab and mp? alot as pseudo anti-air vs Blanka. I noticed the standing MK and Roundhouse can either get stuffed or trade (which is acceptable, if Dhalsim has the lead).

Crouching.MP is a GREAT move, but it is also a different hitbox and much slower with double the start-up time on it.

http://homepage.mac.com/andrew_j_stewart/geo/dhalsim.pdf

I do not know which situations a crouching.MP is good enough, and which it is just too slow for.
I’d rely on mimicking Gian’s move choices for each scenario.

I noted it as a crouching.MP, but I am not sure if it is crouching.MP or if it is crouching.LP or even possibly crouching.HP.
Hopefully close review of the footage or testing can figure out is being used and which can/should be used in each scenario.

A lot of SF is dealing in acceptable trades based on the situation.
If Blanka gets in, Gian demonstrated a willingness to get bit as long as he could ensure Blanka couldn’t combo.
Or oftentimes Gian will give damage on a trade as long as it provides him positioning vs. opponent he wants after the hits resolve.

Even if Dhalsim is behind on life, he can afford to give up health in exchanges IF it ensures him a better overall position: out of bigger danger or sets Dhalsim up to deliver good damage.

It’s LP. The hitbox on LP is WAY better than MP/HP.

LP ftw!!!

Thanks SweetJV
