Dhalsim vs Balrog

wait for the invul to go away and punish with a limb. it doesn’t have that much invul

If he has ex meter, be sure he’ll try to use some Ex punch to win against your fireballs. So you’ve to bait a bit waiting for his EX. So bait 2-3 moves then do a yoga fire.

If he hasn’t meter, feel free to fire until his reaction… punish the turn punch and the headbutt, then continue to fire in a safe distance.

Another idea is to reach him with a meaty mk slide followed by b+lk xx fire or j.HP overhead.

The main option I try to go for normally is yoga drilling out of the corner. They can still head-butt you if they predict correctly or hit you with a fierce punch if they chase after you, but it’s much better than getting stuck in the corner. Part of playing Dhalsim defensive game requires predicting a lot. Also against EX rush punches, I’d rather do light punch yoga flame a lot instead of grabbing, cause grabbing can be pretty risky and doesn’t always work and the reward isn’t as good as messing up and getting hit. Save that meter for the super cause they’ll need to play it safe with the rushes since you can whiff out inferno on reaction.

Turn punch you just need to be careful and time when you have to hit them. It’s not really in your favor to try that if they aren’t too far away from you. And don’t yoga fire if they aren’t on the far opposite side of the screen.

but how to play against a turtle balrog who has a life lead. u cant jump hp coz hes gonna headbutt u. u cant teleport behind him for the same reason. and good balrog players will jump back and hp u when u teleport.

if i don’t have the life lead its time for me to start rushing down, block stun fireball\ex in to iat attacks into throws

tis matchup is freaking irritating. i juz played one balrog today who keeps doing this rush punch that works like an overhead, cr jab, cr jab, headbutt and ultra me. i played dhalsim correctly 95% of this match and didnt manage to block tis overhead punch and lost the match. tis rog can afford to make so many mistakes but all he needs to do all day is to play a guessing game by either rush punching me high/low and failure to block it correctly opens him up for his ultra…gg. So annoying

Any tips to know wich kind of punch he wld dish out? or is it a matter of luck when it comes to blocking?

The overhead charge rush punch has more delay than most of his other punches, but it’s pretty dangerous to get hit by it cause they can combo right after a successful hit. It’s a matter of reflexes. Majority of the time you want to try blocking low unless he’s jumping or trying to do that overhead punch and it’s a big matter of reflexes too. Like I said earlier though, try throwing out a light punch yoga flame every now and then, you’d be suprised how long it stays out and how quickly you can get out of it or easily stop a charged punch. The armor breaking properties are pretty good, you won’t do much damage, but at least they now have one less ex bar, which you really want to look out for throughout the whole match.

f they decide to camp you, try building up some meter and do not miss your super. If they’re pretty low on health and capable of dying from chip damage, you can try ex yoga fire from full screen and they’ll be forced to jump or turn punch, which you can bait out and hit with fierce punch or jumping mp if they jump. It get’s pretty hard when they have the life lead so start out the match well and always start off moving back and blocking. A lot of Balrog’s powerful combo’s use EX meter so take advantage of the time he doesn’t have any meter.

Sorry. You was right! slide work so wonderful against his jump. I praticed recently and im lot better with timing it.

just grab the rush punch, without meter rog cant do anything to sim.

Adnan,

Are there ranges where you CANNOT grab a rush punch? I know you can allllways grab EX punches, but the normal ones too? I’ve training mode’d the situation, and it seems like in some spots you can’t throw him out of a rush – but maybe I’m just timing it wrong!

usually rogs punch will reach 4/5th of a screen so if your anywhere under the distance you should be able to grab him. If his punch is at full distance and you try to grab you will be punished.
The over head and even the turn-around punches can be grabbed but require a strict timing. (requires a closer distance)

Also normal ones too can be grabbed but require a faster reflex than the ex since they are closer distance.

far as I know there’s no problem grabbing him out of an ex rush punch from full screen.

Question:

I know YT avoids most of Rogs dash punches, but in this video:

@3:07 - Iyo Towers and Rog’s Dash Upper whiffs and Iyo punishes with b.mk.
I thought his upper would knock Sim out of tower? or in this instance is his Upper just out of range?

Tower and slides seem to be infinitely advantageous to Sim in this matchup. What about ex dashes? Does YT avoid the overhead (dash slam)?

sorry I’m still super newbie G2 player atm.

Didn’t look like a tower think looked like a range thing. Rog was just barely too far away.

It is absolutely one of the more rewarding moments to throw a Rog out of an oncoming punch attack. For those who aren’t used to it — go to practice mode, and set Rog to do a TAP or an EX dash punch and get your timing down. Takes a lotta practice, but you’ll notice yourself doing it w/o even thinking after a while.

I noticed something iyo did in that match Nomadic posted.

iyo did a short slide outside of slide range, boxer dashpunshed into it and iyo comboed into super. this he probably didn’t confirm, I think you should be able to do the slide and do the super motion (including pressing a punch button) and on whiff, you won’t get a super and on hit (and block, but he’s doing it outside of slide range so it doesn’t matter) you’ll supercancle the slide.

don’t take my word for this, I haven’t tested it. I’ll try to get some testing done later, or could someone else confirm?

I’ve been using it, especially on rush-happy balrogs. Works fine. And even if he blocks, you’ll do the slide from such a distance that when he blocks it, it’s too late to cancel into super anyway, so it will only super cancel if he actually does a rush punch

thanks lollaff. I also tried it out a little in training mode yesterday.

it’s worth mentioning that this kind of doesn’t work vs the overhead dash punch (at least the EX one) because balrogs hitbox seem to move back a whole lot so you have to slide very late. if you whiff the slide you should still have time to block tough

no mather how good you are, balrog will always rape yoga-shit

I just discovered something…
Balrog is no longer invincible during Buffalo headbutt. I noticed in Ranked match, I stuffed a head butt with a slide, and don’t recall that ever happening in vanilla.

In training I recorded Balrog headbutting. My MK slide beats his headbutt on start up, but it will tag me if I slide to early and am in recovery. Have not tested against EX.
