if you can block his attacks (or even if you dont since a throw cant combo) start hitting your backdash as soon as the first hit has connected (im guessing he ll either be using a crouch jab or short) so you shud block the first couple of hits or whatever, and then backdash as soon as you get out of block or hitstun. hopefully they wont become wise to this however and start dashing after you when theyre done jabbing you first.

its FP, and as an Abel player, its god like. Not sure wat Sim can do Air-to-Air wise against it.

Thx Evil, I’ll try it out. Some Abel players are so command throw happy.

listen to this…

as an ok Abel player myself, the most poke is st.lk, just because it has so freaking fast recovery. abel can roll TT or just punish i’ll-spaced or slow pokes, so i strongly recommend ONLY use the hard punch buttons when he is full screen. Learn ALL the fram advatange/disadvantage you have on every poke, so that you know you can punish certain stuff, like roll etc. and also learn the startup AND recovery on the roll so you’ll poke him out of it EVERYTIME. also learn to when it’s good to throw it and when it’s good to teleport, jump back from the roll.

when he is down just create ALOT of space, and save ex for ex fireball, since a ligitamate tactic for abel is to ex CoD through your pokes so you get scared, which is the reason why you need to space well too. back mp and back roundhouse should tag any wheel kick anytime, AND LEARN how to react to it. also back-HP(the headbutt), is a good tool for a jumpin that’s really far away and with mk, that usually stuffs it. also MK to antisipate “unantiairable jump ins”, usually when he is a tiny bit further than half-screen and when he tries to hit you with HP during the jump in. try to jump back as LITTLE as possible, since when you’re in the air, abel can catch up so easily with his 14 framed dash, jumping is alot of times a garantueed oppourtunity to get in for abel. be very wary of using a fireball, since ultra 1, ex wheel kick and sometimes roll beats t on reaction. see how lyo plays this matchup, a fire ball will only be realesed full screen or when it seems he tries to be patient(he jumps over/focus -> you hit him with something.) also, use the slide when he’s half screen jumping too, since most of the time you might slide under him. also be weary when you jump back or try to fireball trap him, since his jump jab/fierce/strong have alot of active frames in the air, but you should already know what to do if someone tries to tag your jump aways or anti-airs with that.

when you’re on your back, good luck. Abel is atleast top 3-4 when your ass is on the ground. try and backdash accordingly and learn what tricks abel players uses, look it up now lol. he can make you guess between high low left right and command throw all at the same time, and he’s not done if het guessed wrong the first time if he has meter. if you see that you block a step kick, throw or backdash accordingly dependent on if he want’s to TT your after thar or not. if he tries to be super fancy, or if his links aren’t tight enough at times, do a short slide and do the usual pokey poke stuff if you notice he didn’t frame trap properly, but a good abel player almost never misses this and will try to make you poke back and then do a normal throw or cross you up if you get too twitchy with your limbs.

that’s all i can think of right now XD

Thanks for the info Brainsplitter. It’s interesting to read how an Abel player approaches the match.

Abel is for sure my worst match-up along with C. Viper so every little bit of info helps heaps.

ha ha yea myself included abel is my other main, a lot of abels options get shut down by backdash use it often.

Seems like once Abel has breathless, even your mp is risky to throw out. It shuts down most of your options compared to Souless and you have to be much more careful. I attacks with mp from far away and he still has enough time to hit me with it without me being able to jump (since jumping takes more frames to do than blocking). I would assume online you would have an easier time avoiding it. And it does around 40% of your health at the lowest possible meter for an ultra >.>

Above is a video of me getting rick-rolled by Abel. I don’t understand the matchup. If i wanted to, i’m sure i could probably block most of those strings but damn, I know they are always gonna end in TT. What can i do? When am i allowed to counter poke in those strings or do i just have to guess at the way end? crouch tech and hope he goes normal TT or b+mk and hope he goes ex TT?

I just don’t understand how you other dhalsims are alleviating pressure strings like this - maybe not even just with abel. In hindsight i guess there were a few opportunities when i could’ve teleported away but i feel sketchy at best about that. blah anyway. what would you have done if you were me aside from not jump around like an idiot so much ?

here is a vid of me playing against an abel player on xbox live.

basically what i did this vid for is to show how good the backdash is against him as i pretty much abuse the crap out of it in this match. basically as soon as i block abels lead in attack, i just start hitting the backdash as much as i can and it can escape pretty much everything he might attempt afterwards, save maybe a COD or wheel kick, but what kinda abel will be throwing those out very often?
i had kinda a mental block in the first round and then realised i should be using a backdash a lot more, after that abel didnt land a single throw or TT on me and he had a real hard time actually staying on me.

usually im a lot less frantic than this as well abel is a matchup im not totally confident with esp against good ones (even though my other main is abel ha ha)

sorry for the awful vid quality

Here is a vid I found a while back (vSF4) of Japanese player PPN controlling the pace and picking his fights against an Abel:

PPN is somewhat boring to watch at times but he really has a solid zoning game and knows how to space in most match ups.

this match is 7-3 Abel straight up. he eats Sim alive. Abel is basically a natural counter char to Sim

if you spam backdash, Abel can punish it… for instance, vs. you I would use a lot of c.lp OS sweep so any backdash attempt turns into another hard knockdown. And yeah, if you are spamming backdash while we are standing up I will start using fierce CoD to punish it because Sim can’t punish it on block, and if you get especially predictable Abel can just raw ultra it with Soulless or Breathless. Fierce CoD is the perfect speed to always get the full grounded combo so if Abel does his normal tick say c.lk c.lp c.lp, then fierce CoD he will catch the grounded recovery of Sim’s backdash
You have to try and outguess Abel at every step. If he has meter, then he can do c.lk c.lp c.lp EX COD which will eat whatever you do with its armor and still punish a backdash if you did that instead. But the Abel probably wants to keep his meter so that he can up his damage output by doing FADC elbow, so he’ll use regular fierce CoD. So, you have to alternate between b+lk to stuff the CoD, and backdash to avoid his tick setups and step kick. Empty jumping back is also an option but then be careful with how you use your arms in that situation

^

I agree with this. Hell I find rufus easier to deal with than abel. Lots of stamina, can outzone fireballers, one of the best mixup close quarters characters, crazy fast with a command grab. Clearly sim’s worst matchup >_<

Gotta say I disagree that PPN is being boring to watch. His Sim is insanely good and imo he is like 1 notch below the gdlk level of Iyo. His matches are fun to watch if you like seeing solid play. And this match demonstrates how flawless you must be to beat a good Abel. If he had made a bad read or made 1 mistake, it could have easily turned into a loss due to the stupid retarded damage Abel does to Sim. Seriously it feels like Sim has Seth’s HP against Abel.

Totally agree with sakeido and Snafoo. I’ve come to the conclusion that Rufus and Abel are perfectly equal in their dominance of Sim, and are 4-6 matchups AT BEST, if not slightly worse than that. What makes Abel the more frustrating of the two, for me at least, is that I cannot keep that motherfucker off of me to save my life. At least Rufus has to do some work to get in. Abel just basically lives in your face. Let’s say at the start of a round Abel and Sim both jump back and are full screen apart. With his super quick dash and roll, he can be right the fuck in your grill in 1.2 seconds. People say, “Oh, you can throw him out of his roll, it’s no big deal”. BULL FUCKING SHIT. Yes it can be done, but a good Abel knows how to space it so that you will whiff that throw as he comes out of the roll, and then you are extra fucked. So that just adds to your fear of him and makes you retreat even more. Then when you add EX CoD into the equation, any attempts to zone him with limbs becomes a huge gamble that can end up costing you easily 50%+ of your life thanks to one fucking combo. So he basically has free reign to get in your face and stay there, rack up stupid large damage super easily, and all the while have you scared to throw out any type of limbs lest you eat that EX CoD LOL Combo. And oh yeah if you get the bright idea of teleporting or backdashing to safety, his multitude of option selects will take care of that. The only guaranteed way to land damage on Abel is to knee his jumpins, but any semi-competent Abel player knows he can just dash the fuck up or roll towards you and there isn’t shit you can do about it, so they rarely jump except to cross up and put you back in the guessing game.

Akuma, Viper, and Rufus are my other terrible matchups in the game, but I can take losing to them. It feels like they have a slight advantage over Sim, but if I play solid I give myself a chance to win. Abel, however, I can’t stand. I hate not being able to attack or zone him out, I don’t like spending every second of a match on the run trying to land a teeny little hit here or there to slowly chip away at his massive health, and I don’t like losing due to making 2 bad guesses per round. Of course this can happen with other characters, so maybe it’s that he’s a fucking Frenchie that grinds my gears. Fuck Abel.

Couldn’t agree more, sir, couldn’t agree more.

On another note — DUDE! You’ve (temporarily) lost your crown on the Sim Leaderboards lol — who the hell is that #1 guy? SirJ something or other (I was drunk as balls when I saw it last night). He’s only the 3rd Xboxer to surpass 20k BP. He gained SICK BP in the past few weeks though… he must not have a job lol. I haven’t done ranked in forever heh. Gotta regain that position, man ;D

I don’t like guessing, so I’m trying to find a way to punish Abel’s COD.
The Abel player can COD in this ways:

 1. first hit, then recovery
 2. first hit, second high hit, third high hit (3 hit combo)
 3. first hit, second high hit, third low hit
 4. first hit, second low hit, third high hit (last 2 hits will combo)

This is what I’ve tested in training mode:

 • After blocking the first hit, super can punish all options except 1) (recovery is -3). You’ve to do it in reversal.
 • you can focus the second hit and punish: you’ll hit with FA lv.1…remember to back dash after that. Unfortunately it doesn’t work well with 1) option.
 • you can teleport before the second hit. If he will do the third, you have a free b.mk xx flame combo.

The best punishes if you’ve no ultra/super and if you block all 3 punches is b.hp xx mp flame or b.hp xx EX flame.

Hahahaa, my #1 Rank is gone forever and it’s all good. I never should have been there to begin with. I’m pretty sure that dude is boosting, though. Been trying to find a replay of his to see his Sim in action, and since there are so few A+ ranked it’s easy to look for them but none of his replays are ever uploaded. He’s #3 or 4 worldwide in PP too. Once you hit 15K & 4K, a large majority of your wins get you 1pt of BP and PP. So jumping up outta nowhere to 20K and 7K in a few days time is highly fishy.

But really, fuck ranked points, I’m having fun messing around w/ Makoto, Adon, and Hakan in endless lately. Tournament mode is pretty lame, really wish they would have pulled their head out and put Champ mode back in.

^^^ awww that’s fucking WEAK, man  I didn’t even know boosting was possible. But yeah man, that guy was gaining sick points in a RAPID succession. If I come across any of his replays I’ll let you know stat. Speaking of replays, I played ranked with my 5600bp Sim last night for the 1st time in a while (I too, have been playing Endless more than anything else) — and I lost to a 1200bp Gen lmao… sigh I went in thinking sweeeeeeeeeeeet free victory for the replay. D:

ORLANDO SIM TONY. Will from tampa here. I personally like to meaty hp flame Abel as much as I can. unless they have ultra 1. For cod punishes I usually backdash the third hit and punish.

idk if you know this but w/e. EX Wheel Kick goes right through flame

thanks you are correct… No meatys on ex or ultra I suppose. Though you can bait the ex with a meaty LP flame. Thatll only work one or twice on someone. Thanks for uppin my game on that one pyro
