Dhalsim Thread

I think you have very much missed almost everything I’ve mentioned so I’m not really going to continue. Also I don’t need help with Hugo matchup, since I’ve basically figured out what to do.

Hey fellas, just wanted to let you know of a stream that some friends of mine are running tonight over at our new project, SDUnity. At least for tonight, the play is to run a ft10 between BT Viscant (Dictator/Gief) vs Steinmania (Julia/Jin) live with commentary in between matches. After they finish, they’ll be taking calls and questions via skype and streamchat.

Regardless of character selection, these are 2 great players that are more than willing to answer any technical or general questions you may have about the game. Even if you don’t care for the character choice today, it’ll be an informative and interesting watch. We here in San Diego play a lot, and Stein has been playing Julia for a few weeks and believes that she’d be an extremely strong partner for Sim, so it is at least something to consider. On top of that, Viscant is a really great technical player that loves to break down the new games and I know for a fact that he has already put an ungodly amount of time into this game. Even though I am not going to be a part of this episode, I’ll be on there in the coming weeks to talk about Sim’s basics and what tech I have found thus far.

Hope to see you guys there at 8:00 PM PST, and I thank all of you in advance for your support.

Having a tough time against reckless Kaz players and pretty much any Vega player.

For the Kaz players, my gameplan going in is to try and alpha counter as many combos as possible and I always try to go for the kill- and not run away against him.

Vega: I can’t figure out how to punish the flying attack where he comes right at you from the front. I feel like I can’t punish the bounce back (after I block) with limbs for some reason.

Kazuya- Realize that both zoom lk and hp beat out his wavedashing. Also zoom mk is great zoning poke. Several of his strings are punishable with s.lk but if he is smart enough not to do those strings, I’m big fan of just reversal teleport back, and against in close jump ins, slide underneath and punish is always nice. Also feel free to just string togeather 3-4 light attacks after he blocks one to create some space before trying to do anything else.

Vega- Not really had much trouble with him. When he does his jumping attack I either teleport behind him to avoid or just jumping strong, zoom or regular depending on distance to beat it. The one super important thing about the matchup is that vega can full punish even just s.lk s.mk chain so you can’t chain against him unless its hitconfirmed so make sure to use alot of double lights or other links. Also zoom mk is pretty good against alot of Vega’s stuff.

Hey guys which gems are good for dhalsim? i just changed Poison for Sim coz she/he doesn’t fit my style and Sim was one of my sf4 mains so i know him better, i use him as my point and Nina as my anchor.

That’s the team I am using too.
Been going with no gems for most part, but my sample 2 for both characters has 2 meter gems for each (the 40% launcher ones).

I can see the argument for having 2 speed gems as Sim’s best gem package though.

Learning to use Sim is so hard. :frowning:

I feel like learning pressure tactics and BnB combos with other classes is WAY easier than just learning how to use Sim’s normals.

IMO, you just have to play a lot of casuals and experiment with all of his buttons; each has a use and will round out your game once you know when to use them (personally I’m still working on a lot of his air mobility options with the drills). It’s better to learn from experience rather than be told, that way your reactions are natural and you don’t really have to think about them. Thankfully, Sim has almost zero reason to ever go into training mode so that gives you more time to play more real matches. Best advice I can give you is that less is more. Throwing needless stand fierces and yoga fires will get you killed fast. If you aren’t sure with a standing “zoom” fierce, try crouching “zoom” jab instead; it has comparable range and keeps the opponent in check while being a far less risky move to throw out.

And maybe it’s just how I play, but if I’m up close and land a hit, I always go into an abbreviated boost combo. Sim isn’t as awful up close as he historically is, but it’s still better to get him out of there instead of taking unnecessary risks.

Edit: Also, I slightly optimized Sim’s combos when he is incoming off of a launcher. Major difference in the corner.

Midscreen: cr.MP, MK x LK Yoga Blast
Corner: cr.MP, cr.MP, cr.HP x MK Yoga Blast

What are some strings to learn with this character? I don’t necessarily mean combo strings, but ones that help presure games. Like anit air back strong, fireball, forward short. I think that’s wat arturo uses. Also feels weird that sim’s long limbs are forward motion.

Sim is all about learning how to escape and punish certain actions. Also you HAVE to learn how to block, something alot of players skip on cause they have uppercuts. I’ve got a new technique I have been working on that seems to be very effective with sim I’ve stumbled on, its nothing ground breaking and going to give it a whirl at PowerUp see how effective it is in tournie standing.

What secret technique is this you speak of?!

I’ll drop a couple of small tips while I’m in here btw: After a back throw, take a few step backwards and then jump forward. If the opponent rolls (As most of them do, to get closer to dhalsim), you can press back+mk (left+mk if you jumped from the left, and your opponent is rolling towards you from the right) and depending on how many baby steps you took, you will either cross up or not. It is very effective since you don’t have to press back to get your short limbs, so you don’t need to know what side you land on to hitconfirm from it.

Also: After doing lk-mk-hk chain on a blocking opponent (Be careful as many characters can punish) A lot of people will try to reach you with a crouching normal. If you see them go for c.mk/c.mp etc. consistently after your block chain (and they are wiffing/not punishing), you can simply go for a launcher after your chain. This works surprisingly well, but it is a prediction, and a very unsafe one at that:P

How do you guys deal with the following as Sim: Rollento HP after stick jump (down+mk), Poison ex/normal jump attack move (leaps towards you through the air, and ex goes full screen). I haven’t found consistent ways to anti air/avoid those on reaction, and I really don’t want to stand there and block them as it leaves me in a bad situation.

Also, does anyone have any nice spacing technology as to how you can land hits with mk and short slide, where you will always be able to combo off of them with lk, on hit?

Um against rolento every time i see the stick i just up back plus strong and always seems to work for me. Works even if stick hits, blocked or whiffs. Also against poison kick thing I was wondering the same thing. I’m assuming its the same idea as stopping rufus dive kick spam and just use stand l.p to hit it before their active frames.

Also the trick I’m working on I’m not sure is a good idea yet or not. Waiting to try it out against good opponents before i bring it up.

I hate this cliff hanger…
Imma put my money on it being a pandora exploit.

Ok so I finally got to test it some new opponents offline. The basic idea was an option select with raw launcher. Though it worked in some circumstances it failed in others. Even the ones that work opponents can change it around so it doesn’t. So ya sucks, I think I could actually get the option select to work if it wasn’t for f’n quick combos. Oh well.

I wish there was an option to disable quick combos.

Anyway, still terrible with Sim, but I’m having fun in Endless lobbies just flailing around.

If there are any PSN players here, feel free to add me: “Morningstar_PA”

My Dhalsim is preschool level, but I would love to learn from others.

Going from crouch block to bMK I am getting yoga flame like 40% of the time.

Do you mean blast? It shouldn’t happen, so either you are pressing something else, or it’s a bug:o

I found a really easy OS with alpha counter btw; but I don’t think it’s very usefull. If you go from block, to forward and press HK+FP, you will get launcher, unless you are put in blockstun (then you will get alpha counter). If you go from block, and do a circle motion forward before pressing HK+FP, however, you will get a HP fireball, unless you are put in blockstun first. This is atleast a little more safe than a raw, wiffed launcher, but still pretty unsafe:P It might be usefull if someone are spamming you with jabs etc, and you want to alpha counter: It is pretty hard to alpha counter jabs, and a little stagger will result in the raw launcher.

meant blast

What are Sim’s best pokes that I can use to confirm into a launcher? I really have trouble getting launchers with every character, but especially with Dhalsim.

Also, what are his best moves for switch cancels?
