DMC3 was good enough for an origin story. It showed Dante getting his Devil Trigger, and coming to terms with what it meant. No, it didn’t show him getting the powers for the first time, or even why he decided to go into the Demon Hunting business, but I don’t think those things needed to be drawn out.
If you think about it, ever since DMC1 Capcom has had no idea what to do with the character. In 2 he turned into a mute coin-flipper and that didn’t work. People missed the snarky one-liners. So they didn’t know how to bring that back without un-doing what they did in 2, so they made 3 a prequel, so they could go overboard with the attitude (hello Dante riding a missile!) and actually have his character develop. In 4 they really had no idea what to do next…so they made a new character. Note that Dante does little more than go from point A to point B, fighting monsters and cracking jokes along the way - his half of the game doesn’t even advance the story.
If they REALLY had no better ideas (bullshit - DMC4 raised a lot of questions and didn’t answer them - most of us were expecting the next DMC game to address these things) and couldn’t think of anything better to do than an origin story - motherfucking Vergil. He’s a fan favorite, only been in one game, and his character wasn’t that deeply explored. Why did he end up so different from Dante? What drives his thirst for power? Instead of throwing the story in the past again, they had a perfect opportunity to bring Vergil back AND explore his past - Nero. I’m going to ignore the idea of Nero being Vergil’s son, and just go with this - so Vergil’s soul is in Nero’s arm. The more Nero uses Devil Bringer, the stronger it becomes, until Vergil is able to take over Nero’s body, trapping Nero himself in hell. Something happens in the real world which keeps Dante and Vergil busy, while in hell Nero has to fight to regain power so he can retake his body - as he does so he experiences flashbacks that relates to Vergil’s past. Easy DMC5. This is just a rudimentary idea, but I’m willing to bet that a DMC teaser trailer that closed on the image of Nero laughing, slicking his hair back, and saying “It’s been a long time, brother” in Vergil’s voice to Dante would have generated far more positive buzz than DmC.
But if DmC fails, then maybe we will see a return to the original storyline in 10 years or so. I said “It worked for Street Fighter?” before because this is kind of what happened in the jump from SF2 to SF3 - take Ryu and Ken out of NG and you could almost call it something other than SF. At the time, many people were disappointed in it because they were expecting to see their favorite SF2 characters and a continuation of the series, but got something totally different instead. 10 years later and we get SF4, which finally brought back the SF2 characters. So maybe over time DmC will be treated as its own game and they’ll go back to the DMC continuity. I hope at least.
As for DMC, that shit needed the grace of god because the series was bust by 4. And, as for storyline issues. Nero being vergils son is where the story jumped shark period. Nothing more can be added to save a train wreck like that.
Don’t understand how you could have gotten that from a simple comment like “Castlevania is back”. By back meaning the franchise is relevant again, not that the 3d games were bad. Played the shit out of lament of the innocent back in the days.
I thought Nero was Human from the start. Why would he try to hide his arm if he was already a “Sparda clone”? He even hid it from his girl in the beginning. while in the last scene she said something like, “you will always be human to me”. Also, Kyrie’s brother was human but somehow got powers just like the priest did, but wasn’t he dead first then reborn with demonic power? Meh.
and what’s the deal with people calling this garbage DMC5. it’s not even DMC it’s “DmC”.
I don’t really see the difference between their approaches like at all. Both companies have the parent companies of said IP’s working with them. [Castlevania had Kojima working on it, DMC has Capcom of Japan involved.] There’s really nothing to suggest that Ninja Theory has less love than Mercury Steam.
Well, if the thing that Nero is Vergil’s kid is to be believed (and I do believe one of the devs DID say it’s true), he’d be part demon from the get-go, but it isn’t why he got the Devil Bringer. He had a normal old arm for years until one day Useless got attacked and he couldn’t defend her, then it awakened and he busted heads. My theory is, it’s some sort of incomplete Devil Trigger, due to Nero being more human than demon.
And yes, this trash is not DMC5.
Except the guys at Mercury Steam respect the original IP while Ninja Theory says shit like “the original Dante isn’t cool anymore”, because apparently they speak for all of us. Just because Capcom (read: that retard Inafune) said it needed to be radically different didn’t mean the fans needed it to be.
DMC4 outsold every other game in the series and outdid Capcom’s expectations of it, as said in their own quarterly report. So no, it wasn’t bust. And it wasn’t a train wreck.
It’s called controversy, people like Inafune love shit like that. And, the “disrespect” is generally coming from Capcom not Ninja Theory. They insisted on a radically new design despite NT earlier more conservative efforts. As for the fanboys, they have no valid argument except to just complain about how a character looks emo.
I want proof of the bolded and sales dictate game quality now? DMC 4 is, was and will always be mediocore piece of crap. The game rode of idea’s from DMC 3 and it didn’t distinguish it’s self as it’s own game at all. It’s to Dmc what World at war was to COD.
It wasn’t anything special, it only manages to edge out the first two games of the series by being a next gen game. DMC 3 shits on it easily and DMC 1 fans have good arguments in response to DMC 1 Vs DMC 3. Between those 2, 4 holds no weight and only manages to cling over 2 which was broken as shit.
there are great amounts of “valid complaints” about DmC. the emo part is just everyone/most people’s initial reaction to the 1st trailer. what through the gasoline into the fire was the past 3 articles and Inafune being a dick while shafting a very popular franchise. DmC’s Dante was going to be wearing suspenders and no shirt no jacket.
did you read at all or is it seeing pictures your only way of understanding things?
fuck “how Dante got his hair”. that’s not an even valid aspect to DMC or Dante.
fuck “he’s younger”. it’s already been done. not valid. what the fuck is this? Dragonball GT?!
fuck “I am Dante”. that’s not valid either. he’s been Dante for “12 years” now, lol @ NT.
fuck “He’s more punk than Emo”. also not valid. Hunt demons more. not robot dolls.
fuck “I’m waiting for actual gameplay footage”. that trailer was in game footage just like RE5’s trailers.
Posting in a thread anticipating a game you are interested is not trolling. Whining over the color of a characters hair or how a character looks for close to 50 fucking pages is.
Inafune has always been a dick, anyone who knows his history knows this. That has absolutely nothing to do with his ability to make games period. And, suspenders is another cosmetic issue just like him looking “emo”. Nope, no valid arguments here.
WTF is this shit?
*His hair? it’s a fucking reboot, and that’s another cosmetic issue.
*It’s a reboot, Being young isn’t valid anymore since it’s a different Dante ffs.
Who else would he be? Did the trailer claim otherwise, he’s another Dante because this is another continuity.
*Because we know they are not demons? or are you bawwing over how they look because that’s another cosmetic issue.
*It’s also a very early look at the game.
Where are the valid arguments?
To each his own, some people liked part 2 as well.
