Yea DMC sells best in the west already so why they needed to rebrand the series to apear more to it’s strongest fanbase is just nonsensical.
Why does Capcom like creating fake problems and then try to fix them?
Shit is getting annoying.
you know the answer to that question
Spite?
I mean, if that interview is legit they did actually tell NT to make something that would piss them off.
I honestly wonder why that instead of forcing a great series to be remade why don’t they just make a new game. I mean they have talented staff and they can easily hire up and coming game designers to do this for them. Its like calvin klein doing the Marky Mark ads shit is forced and comes across as lame.
Japanese-born franchise owners seek a non-Japanese developer to create an “alternate continuity reboot” (think Ultimate Marvel), hoping to approach old material with a fresh take.
The Lords of Shadow producer made the Ultimate Marvel comparison, and said that, like in American comics, having alternate takes on these legendary canons is perfectly okay.
Another similarity, before I go to bed: neither MercuryStream nor Ninja Theory have a history of making good games. The big difference is MercuryStream, via producer interviews, trailers, etc. have shown they’ve put an extraordinary amount of thought, care, and LOVE into Lords of Shadow, whereas Ninja Theory seems to take the apologist route.
You know, ironically, all this talk is making me want upgraded modern ports of the 4 DMC games, just to see if it measures up to the praise. I suppose I could just buy the originals, given my happy, working, slim PS2.
Dr. B’s reboot game is being handled by KonabungiezzardrareSNESerasquare.
I was going to do a mocking “next up” of other games to be rebooted, but I couldn’t think of any horrible analogies.
Except now I suddenly want Infinity Ward to do an MGS game.
Team Ninja rebooting Strider. Except I don’t think that would actually be horrible
that actually would be good. Strider is a series that can be interpreted various ways
I approve of this new game. Crack heads are the new hot wings. :v
According to Capcom, though, DmC isn’t meant to be part of an alternate continuity.
The dumbest thing of all is, they’re retconning the most beloved game in the series (DMC3) for this crap.
It’s the delicious combination of lack of creativity + lack of the balls to do something new.
Can’t develop your story anymore? Um…origin story! Oh wait, uh, already did that with DMC3. Well then…reboot! They already have the story, so instead of building up from scratch they can just rework things here and there to make it different enough for people not to say “this is the same crap I saw last time!” With a new IP, they have to take a risk on people investing in a game that they know nothing about, when sales tend to show that people flock to familiarity even if its not that good. Even for non-fans, DMC is a big enough title to have widespread name recognition. They must be hoping that that will help draw people to the game.
I’m really getting fed up with reboots in general. I’m not buying this game new, and I think I’m not going to go see any more movie reboots.
Gotta admit, Capcom never DID cover Dante’s origin (you know, when his abilities first manifested. Adult-hood is not someone’s origins if they already had powers by that time, Az. They’re hopefully going back to the BEGINNING of Dante’s history of ownage…back when he was but a rook, getting owned himself half the time, and getting a handle on his abilities) except for a couple spoken lines that only talk about his early adult-hood…but I don’t think radically changing the character like this is the way to go. Maybe he really WAS a troubled kid, getting shitted on by society for being part demon and all. I can see that. And of course he’s gonna be a rebel, with all the weird power in the hands of someone immature…sure…but turning him into your average north american anime fangirl’s fantasy (a skinny guy who looks like he’s gay, and got beaten up by a rough john last night)…damn, man…too far. Took dat shit too far. If they lost the “beaten-up male trick” look and just went with shorter (this version seems to be taller than the original Dante judging by the height scale in the booking pic), slimmer, younger, non-pretty Dante, this game could work.
Part of Dante’s charm was the whole “Who the fuck is dis gai and where did he get all these powers, oh wait he just launched something in the air and cushioned it’s fall with bullets before killing it. What was I saying…” feeling you got. For me at least.
Things are good when the backstory aren’t fully fleshed out, and lose all that charm the instant it’s explained(even when just a little bit is looked at). Look what happened when Stars Wars had 3 prequels(but these movies have much bigger problems too), Squeenix caving in to fantards and reveal a bit of Sephiroth’s past, Condemned when the 2nd game revealed why people were going crazy.
Why is this thread still alive? DMC5 is going to be some bullshit… I knew this as soon as I heard “Unreal Engine”, “Ninja Theory”, and “Reboot”… Ninja Theory Enslaved is looking kind of bad… how much hope am I supposed to have for this… its like they never learn from their mistakes…
You quoted something wherein someone else said “we’re not going to be definitive.” Even if the old canon has been abandoned (temporarily, I bet), that doesn’t change what I said.
B’s a doctor, not a Vulcan titty inspector! Except he’s that too.
I would have been perfectly happy with a DMC5 that followed 4 and had Dante, Trish and Lady going around busting demons. They could even throw in Nero and keep the story simple. Just have it include bringing back Vergil and/or resurrecting Sparda to fight Mundus again. Easy.
Dante DID say he was gonna be keeping an eye on Nero. I bet we’ve got another real Devil May Cry coming. Think of DMC as some Sfex bullshit: same name, but non-canon.
They said “we’re not going to be definitive about a lot”, but did specifically say “one thing that we can be definitive about is that this is the same Dante - just younger”. They can always retcon what happens in the (extremely likely) event that this goes over as well as DMC2, but it was much easier to sweep DMC2 under the rug since they were able to just push it all the way to the very end of the timeline (a convenience they won’t have with this). It’s just disappointing that they’ll be wasting everyone’s time thanks to needing to declare discontinuity when they could have made a real DMC5 themselves in the first place.
