Commentating with Seth Killian showed him the light
It feels so odd reason most of the reviews for the game, only to have them talking down on it, and then the final score is like a 9.
WTF?
They gave Dragon Age 2 like a 9.2 or something high like that.
So… anything can happen, lol.
Polygon aren’t just some random reviewers, they are designers, academics etc.
The reviewer still gave it an 8 though.
Being a designer doesn’t really mean much when creating an opinion piece such as a review.
This game is an 8 or 9 for mainstream games now, though. It’s not shorter than 6 hours, has a ton of cutscenes and voice acting, some “art direction”, and isn’t completely broken unless you poke at the seams. If it had multiplayer and perks it would be 9.5/10, and if it was open-world it would be GOTY easily.
It’s like when you read reviews for fighting games on mainstream press and the reviewer has no idea what score to give it, because he personally would rate it a 6 but he has to pretend to be someone who likes fighting games. Nobody has to pretend to like DMC or action games to review this.
Sessler’s review seems to be the most honest. You can’t deny that the game looks good and there are some interesting concepts regarding combat design, but it seems that a lot of the reviews are forgetting the games flaws (horrid writing, weapon specific enemies, use of platforming). Hell most reviews even mention the lack of lock-on and look at it as if it is not an issue. 1 on 1 is fine, but fighting a crowd, it leaves much to be desired. As of right now MGR still has my money as the first day 1 retail purchase 1Q 2013.
EDIT
I just watched IGN’s review. . . . . .DA FUQ!!!

Aquila + Kablooey will probably open up even better combos.

lol
8.5…wow thats right along with Famitsu. It seems like the problems with the game wasn’t a problem or it didn’t bother the reviewer at all like it probably would some people.
That IGN review on the other hand could give 2 fucks about even mentioning the story problems.
At least Sesslers and Gametrailers were pretty indepth for the most part.
ELEGANCE? LOOOOOOOOOOOL
To be fair did you read what he wrote? This is taken from the closing of the review.
This is pretty much exactly what I said would be the case with DmC. It won’t be as good as the games we worship like DMC3/Bayonetta/NGB but it’ll be better than other action games like Ninja Blade/God of War III/Dante’s Inferno. Even from the demo it was fun to play and it fixed things I didn’t like about DMC3/4 but I knew it wouldn’t be DMC3/4.

Sorry if this was posted already, I only just saw it today.

I wouldn’t write off the OG Devil May Cry series just yet. If doesn’t sell as much as DMC4, guarantee we’ll see the old series again.
I think the only way I can stomach playing this game for a lengthy period of time is with all the weapons. Honestly, that’s one thing I do like about DmC. IMO for DMC to advance forward, it needs two things: A second attack button like how Bayonetta and Ninja Gaiden have two(because I don’t like losing an attack button because it’s tied to swordmaster), and the ability to stock loadouts. Like with the tap of a direction or something, switch from Gilgamesh/Rebellion/whatever to Cerberus/Yamato/???.
Also, I’ll need that all black Vergil knockoff outfit that he has. His default coat is still ass.
that was a wack ass reasoning. It’s not like comparing NFL Blitz to Madden 2002. when reviewers compare games they usually compare them to the game to others in the same genre. he didn’t just compare the game to just the DMC franchise. Yet, every reviewer in 2003 did compare the game to it’s predecessor. How is that an reasonable comparison? Oh wait, it’s not because he just breaks the game down to it being only a game.
when you have an already established franchise like, oh maybe Dynasty Warriors, you don’t just judge the game solely as a game. The reviewer would compare it to other previous installments and other games that are that genre like Ken’s Rage. If he was using that as an reason as to why this would not get a high score then I’d say his review and all others are fair. No, they use the “game’s merits”. That’s bullshit.
You can’t tell anyone that shit has harmful bacteria like ecoli which can kill you, smells horrible, and should never be mishandled then turn around say, “but it’s good for you so buy it.”
they really know how to make “overrated crap” an legit judgement.
Modern gaming is just about fucked.
Well, ShogunZ, Freeman and co., there you are. The game is a “hit”… Congratulations, you win. No one wants to be challenged anymore. Enjoy yourselves, I guess.
Goes back to playing Anarchy Reigns and continues to patiently wait for Metal Gear Rising EDIT: Reviews haven’t mattered since print EGM died, if not beforehand…
lol @ “All reviews are shit now because reviewers like this game”.
Also, I think I should point out something that SHOULD be obvious: as far as reviews and reality goes…isn’t deep dynamic combat with dry shitty story par for the course with any DMC? (yes)
