Desperate with a Stick :(

just unpacked my SE madstick and gone through the easy ryu trials again, that help to get to grips with it.

been on training a little while and i am slowly getting used to it.
i am finding pressing buttons a lot harder to get used to that using the stick.

on a pad you have them all at one thumbs distance,
now i feel like i have been dropped in a carkpark and i need to find my car.

^ Same. I haven’t used a stick since like 2000 or something. Apparently playing with a stick is not like riding a bicycle, because I am having a hell of a time trying adjust to it. ;(

You guys weren’t kidding with the transition. I just got my TE stick today and played practically all day and I sucked. I thought maybe since I used to play in the arcades a ton when I was younger that the transition might be easier, but that’s not the case. It was very disheartening playing because I was getting my ass kicked by players who I know I could easily beat with the 360 pad. However, even in the first day, I saw some improvment. I think I won 3 Championship Mode tournament’s today and ended up getting a cool even 1,000 GP before shutting it off.

My problem is not special move execution. I can hit hadoukens, shoryukens, dashes, etc. about 90% of the time. I can even comfortably do DP>FADC>Ultra for the most part, though more times on the right side then on the left, but at least I can pull it off on the first day. I can even pull off the cr.MK xx EX Hadouken >FADC>Ultra in Training, but only from the right side. Much easier on the stick then the pad. My main problem right now is still getting used to the button placement and finger positioning. So for the most part I’m pretty iffy on combos, links, and pokes. Obviously this just comes with practice and aquiring the muscle memory to adapt to the layout over a pad. A big problem right now is I fail at tech throwing A LOT.

I also use the wineglass holder technique. This is the most natural way to hold the stick, IMO. This way it’s all about the wrist and quick motions. My main question to seasoned stick users is do you still use macros for throws and focus attacks? For example, my stick layout is obviously lp, mp, hp on top and lk, mk, hk on the bottom. The two black buttons have no input. I still use LP/LK for throws and MP/MK for focus attacks. Should I use one of the black buttons for throws and focus attacks, or just keep it as is? Also, how do you normally set up your fingers and do you move them around for different combos or always keep them assigned to certain buttons? Right now I try to practice having my index on LP, middle on MP, ring on HP, and my thumb on LK. Sometimes in the heat of battle I lose focus and my fingers struggle to keep up, but again I guess this just comes with practice and muscle memory.

Sorry for the long post. Thanks if you read and answer my questions.

i’m new too, i dont think trying to keep your fingers and thumb in that position is helpful.

i quickly changed to just pressing which buttons are needed with my hand hovering over the HK area mostly.

my problem is trying to tick throw now,i am always getting a lightpunch light kick combo.
i suck.

I don’t use the far right buttons of the eight, just standard arcade and it’s fine. I thought about using them for PPP/KKK, but I don’t want to trigger EX moves unintented. You’ll get used to FA and throw/techs with standard layout. I place my fingers same as you, index and thumb positioned for throw and just move one coloumn to the right if I’m doing FA, still with my index and thumb.
I don’t use my thumb when doing blockstrings/comboes, so if I’m hitting lk first in such, I’ll be using my index. Timing is just better with the index. No matter where I’m at, it’s pretty easy to go instant to FA or throw once you get the musclememory.

i think the reason why some people are having problems with ryus shory fadc to ultra is because the shoryu only hits once and the time frame is a lot smaller than say akumas 3 hit shoryu where you KNOW exactly when you can fadc (for ex. 2nd hit). For me, i can pull of kumas shoryu to red hadou constantly but ryus single fierce shoryu fadc to ultra is a bit tougher for me.

Starting to get used to it now. Special move executions are good, FADC into Metsu on both sides can be pulled off, and I’m starting to get my cross-ups, links, and block strings back in sync. I must be getting better since I just won a G2 tourney.

Yeah, starting to get the hang of it a little more. I’ve been practicing FADC a lot and just SRKs on reaction. The ultra is getting better on the left side now too. The game is actually fun again rather than frustrating. But I’m still having problems on some other little things that I need to work out like neutral jumping. I must be retarded or something but I have to really concentrate to do a neutral jump or else I’d jump forward or backwards. It’s really frustrating in the middle of the match when you jump towards them when you didn’t intend it. But as I get better, I’m really starting to enjoy using the stick. And I use the wine glass method. Frankly, I think the stick is just too short to hold it any other way.

Ive got a Hori FS3 for the ps3 and im suffering from random inputs… excecuting same move with a different outcome… :S even with the simpelist combos :[

Dude I fucking love you!

This has just mad it far easier for me to pull off 2 quater circles for the ultra!

I have had my Se stick for a week now and I feel I have been getting better (Ive banned myself from using a pad for at least 2 weeks) but i couldnt pull off ultras that well.

  1. It could of been the way I was holding the stick…
  2. I didnt realise how sensitive the actual buttons are, if I even grazed a kick button with my hand it would not register at all.

Since seeing the “wine grip” I have been using it all night and to great success, even pulling off a few FADC ultras.

To all those who feel like giving up, DONT, put in the practice and you will be rewarded. I am no where near confident enough to fight anyone just yet but another 2/3 weeks I feel I may be at the same skill level as I am on a pad.

TL:DR

Thanks for showing wine grip and keep up the practice as it will show through in the end!

once I was a pad user, using stick kinda makes me frustated sometimes.

Before playing SF, I’m a tekken player which didnt use wine grip method, just normal hand grip. still done some minor & fatal mistakes such as pull out ultra -> (EX) DP, hadoken -> DP and vice versa…

yeah, it’s really frustated me sometimes…

I just tried the fightpad last night and I must say, for one thing it’s the hell of alot easier to dash consistently on a pad.
I’ve been playing stick onlye since release. You really need the minimize your movement and clock in precise excecution on the stick.

After few weeks with the stick i have to say it’s much easier right now. I could even win a online game when I got it, but time is here, I can win, and even ryus Shoryuken dash to ultra… More pratic the game is real fun with the stick…
But I hate when I the game laggs online, when the commando comes after…
Some EUs Ryu player feel free to add me, and pratic some games when online

My only problem is pulling off an EX SRK instead of an Ultra, damn you shortcuts ’

same

doing srk fadc into ultra is brutal as well.

for me i dident play at all in arcades my entire life…so i have had no stick expirience…i just switched to stick a few weeks ago and im slowly getting back to where i was with a pad…i can already see the advantages. charge characters are already easier to play! its the shotos and akumas raging demon that im having trouble with…but after spending over 15 years with a regular controler im not expecting to just magicly be as good with a stick…if it takes a few months thats not so bad in my opinion

I just got my stick today and I’m up to roughly the same level that I was at with the pad. I can’t do the same things yet, but some things are easier so I can beat the same level of people that I already could. My problem with fadc - ultra now is that it’s a little hard for me to hit all the punches at the exact same time. Other than that the trasition has been easy.

2-3 weeks of daily play – it will come – it’s a tough transition if your a pad pugilist.

Couldn’t win an online match the first day. A week in and my play on the stick is now about the same as I was on the pad, perhaps even better because I am finding certain combos and links easier to pull off with the stick. Granted, during this week I’ve played a ton, but when people preach “practice” it’s no joke. :bgrin:

Still cant play rushdown style with stick
