Whew. Took down Pinwheel which was surprisingly easy. All he did was float around and fire slow projectiles. Honestly, the wheel skeletons were tougher. Picked up the great scythe while I was down there as well. Now I’m back at firelink enjoying the bright sky. I didn’t realize how much I missed the sunlight until I ran out of the catacombs. This then reminded me of one of the reasons why I love this game: atmosphere. It’s pretty rare when I’m happy because I can finally see the sky in a game.

Yeah, I know I’m not done down there, but I needed a break. Plus, I can kindle a few other bonfires.

Killed Seath. After 6 attempts at trying to cut off his tail to get the sword I gave up and just killed him. After he destroys the crystal you really only have that one chance at his tail after that it’s extremely difficult. But, if you’re just trying to kill him then he’s not too difficult. Middle of the road in terms of difficulty.

Had no intent on killing him but then I read on the wiki that you absolutely need to kill him to unlock the Kiln of the Flame and finally beat the game. Made it through Londo Ruins (again), love how my Chaos Scythe one hit kills those fucking annoying ghosts. Made it all the way to the Abyss, not too difficult but before I took the leap of faith I looked it up and (of course) I need to kill that Wolf boss and equip a ring in order to actually go through the Abyss.

Rant: Let’s say you’re playing offline and have no internet (It went out, didn’t pay the bill, whatever) how in the fuck would anyone figure that out?

It’s a good game, not saying it’s bad, it’s not too friendly to new players (not necessarily casual players) but some of the cryptic shit is just too much.

It makes me wonder how Castlevania 2: Simon’s Quest would have been received had it come out with the internet of today.

Also, Slowbeef’s LP is pretty damn good:

To call a place which holds a covenant ‘pointless’ is a stupid thing to say.
The point of Ash Lake is to join the path of dragon cov so you can get those transformation stones and so that you can do
that dragonhead glitch all day and then go “well what is it?”

#MLG

with a hell of a lot of aimless wandering, grinding, and reading item descriptions let me tell you.

i think my first playthrough of DS1 took me around about 130 hours. and even then there was maybe like 1-2 things i had to look up when i was super stumped for like a week.

ITT: Louis DSP’ing it up.

Good thing Dark Souls has no bugged jumping mechanics.

Go start another thread about which SRK member you want to have sex with.

In the case of the Abyss ring, by listening to what the NPCs near that area tell you. Specifically, as far as I remember, the guy who can uncurse you at the cost of Humanity.

So let’s say you make that leap of faith. You’ve entered the boss fog, and there’s no way back, and it’s not like the game would just place a trap like that out without there being a way around it. But you don’t have what it takes now, so, mmkay. Time to go explore elsewhere. Hey, the name on that grave… Isn’t that the guy that other guy mentioned? And that ring I got from it. “Abysswalker”, it says. Hmmmmm. Oh hey, that message outside the boss door said “Need ring” and it had a lot of ratings, too.

A lot of my DS2 playthrough was like that, because I know the Souls mindset by now. “Enter the memories of withered things” had me stumped for a bit until I talked to the kitty, and then it clicked.

Sorry if I’m reading this wrong, but from what I gather someone wanted to know how you would know to use The Abyss Ring to enter The Abyss? The description says something to the effect of “use to traverse The Abyss” doesn’t it?

Pret-ty much! Though I think you don’t actually get to see the “Abyss” message if you dive in without the ring… You just fall into nothingness and die. So you yourself have to suss out that that was the Abyss.

First time I dropped in and died I figured there had to be something, the fog gate gave kind of gave it away for me.

You’re gonna have a HARD time if you play DS2. Mostly cause the most useful NPCs all look like enemies.

Also, enjoy not getting certain Pyromancies, including the best one, Poison Cloud.

Ingway wont shut up about the Abyss tho, and he’s in New Londo, goes on about Darkwraiths an shit. It’s not tooooo terribly hard to put 2+2 together in this instance. I think figuring out the Giant Memory bullshit in 2 is a lot more…obtuse. Especially if the Forst of Giants is the first place you visit. By the time you’ve gotten the King Ring you’re probably going to have forgotten all about those trees. One of the huge downsides to all this bonfire porting right from the jump, none of the locations leave much of a lasting impression on you.

Well now I know, and knowing is half the battle.

And I did talk to the Priest in Londor Ruins and he never mentioned using a Ring for The Abyss but this is before I drained the water.

No he says you need to find Artorias for he walked the Abyss and may be willing to tell you how he did it.

Kalameet isn’t that hard. Gotta avoid that the damage debuff his casts.

the whole thing with the game being really obscure and not giving you many hints kinda works the other way as well.

i gave the game too much credit when i entered that part of the woods before shaded ruins that is completely enveloped in fog.

i attempted to walk in, wondered why i couldnt see fuck all, then started getting killed by shit i couldnt see, decided “oh shit there must be a ring that clears the fog etc, ill come back later”

yea nope there isnt at all. you just gotta brute force your way through.

What are the best two handed weapons that stagger after one hit?

Also, I have a +9 Eagle Shield, can I upgrade this to Greatshield of Artorias?

Probably something like the Black Knight Great Sword or Demon Machete.Demon Great Ax is probably up there to. I’ve only messed with Ultra Greatswords a bit, I took a Divine Greatsword I made into the Catacombs and Tomb of Giants on my second, Tankier build and it pummeled everything and of the Ultra Greatsword class that sword’s not very impressive, you can get the Zweihander for free in the graveyard as soon as you arrive in Firelink.

The memory wasn’t too bad, because there’s a very noticeable glittering tree just behind one very memorable bit of geography. Once the idea of what I was supposed to do clicked, I pretty much went there immediately. And also to some other places that popped into my head.

I will agree that all the teleporting makes it easy to forget certain things. Like a certain Majula contraption that won’t move when you first pass it grumblegrumble. By the time I got to that, I’d done literally everything else in the main story.

Now, for the REALLY obtuse BS, you have to get into the optional content. Like why you can’t harm a certain towering naked guy at first. However, it seems the developers intended for the Souls series to be discussed online. Take the Darkdiver. Every single one of those locations is TOUGH to discover, to the point that I believe one of them was intended to be discovered by accident and then shared among friends. It’s in a place where you can’t see the ledge you’re supposed to land on… But, it’s right underneath something that can push you off and theoretically down onto that ledge if you’re careless.

Though I don’t know if you can see that ledge with a torch or not. And I guess some will comb the game for stuff. I know my blind playthrough had me tapping entire walls and combing shrine waters with a fine-tooth torch.
