To say that religion should be stripped from government is too completely destroy our government itself. Everytime I hear this I think America wants to give up democracy for communism, because only in communism is religion none existent in government.

Looking back, we can see how important separation of church and state was, which was done by our forefathers. They were ingenious back then. If the evangelicals had their way, the Bill of Rights would be the Ten Commandments…
…no religion affecting government isn’t what makes communism communism.
Not to mention that the very secular western and northern european countries are social democracies.

the fact that religion could be interpreted in many ways is reason enough to keep it out of government. christianity alone has A LOT of interpretations just from a few verses. people will use religion to enforce their beliefs and then all kind of fuckery will take place

On the contrary, it affects it greatly cause it’s non existent. It removes any morals one would have. Without it crimes would go un punished. There would be nothing to despute these crimes for there would be nothing to determine what is good and what is evil. Like genocide and persecution of any kind. Just like in some of these communist countries.
I’m not saying that religion should be the all deciding factor in government, but it should play some role in government. You all are talking about completely removing it.

divine command theory of ethics is a logical fallacy. what god says is good isn’t good because he says it’s good, it’s good because there is something innate about them that make them good. otherwise god would be able to say any arbitrary thing is good.

Have you ever heard of any study that shows that after controlling for factors like education and income, there’s a higher rate of crime among atheists than among people who believe in God? Because I can tell you, there haven’t been any studies like that at all. It just so happens that I do believe, but I know lots of people who don’t and who are as nice and law-abiding as anyone.
You’re trying to say that it’s a cause and effect, when it’s not. Morals don’t come from religion, religion merely can provide a set of morals without the individual needing to come to their own conclusions of morality. Are you trying to claim that all athiests are immoral criminals because they have no morals due to the denial of religion in their lives? That without religion as a foundation, a society will fall into lawlessness and anarchy? That’s a tough pill to swallow.
Nice to see Americans talking about religion having no place in government. I couldn’t agree more. Used to strongly effect my gov back in the 70’s (condoms were looked down apon etc) but now the idea of our leaders faith or if he even has one being discussed in the context of does it make him worthy to lead us, would well… be laughable.

But of course Religion effecting politics in Ireland only resulted in stupid backward thinking. Where as in more militaristic countries like Iran and the US it can also result in a lot of needless death.

If the communist party came into power in Germany in the 1930’s instead of the Nazi’s the world would have been a much better place. It very nearly did. But hitler burned down a important building in germany which angered the german people, but hitler blamed the communists , angry people don’t make the best choices. I’ve seen this pattern repeat itself in my life time. ie iraq war etc etc
