Bush Sr. tried to alleviate the national debt, Democratic congress wanted more spending and instead of cutting spending, like Bush wanted, they raised taxes. This in turn caused Republicans to turn on him when he proposed spending cuts that would reduce the national deficit by $500 BILLION because he had said in his election there would be no new taxes.
So the Dems fucked over Bush Sr’s bid to fix the economy. Another case of a Democratic majority in Congress fucking things up, just like the current one (arguable, I know, but they haven’t really done anything to fix problems, have they?)
The point is that you can’t judge simply on looks. Kennedy LOOKED confident, Nixon LOOKED sick (because he was, he was all hopped up on antibiotics for an injured knee that got infected while campaigning, FYI he visited all 50 states and refused to stop campaigning until he was hospitalized, after which he hopped out of bed to finish) but if you couldn’t see the candidates during that debate it sounded like Nixon won.
Kennedy wasn’t the reason Nixon looked horrible on TV. Nixon was, honest to god, a man’s man. No makeup, fuck being sick/injured, I’m going to keep on trucking, etc. His mistake was getting caught (Watergate).

But that wasn’t linked to the recession of 1990-1991, since taxes were raised in 1991. I mean seriously, every major crash and recession we’ve had in this country since Reagan came into power has come after extended periods of Republican control, and most of the major economic scandals have come because of Republicans, even the Enron and mortgage and energy crises in the past decade that were caused by McCain’s ex-economic advisor Senator Graham inserting in the Enron loophole into a big old spending bill Clinton signed. This includes the 1980s, when Congress was controlled by conservative Democrats (they were called the Reagan Democrats, if you’ll recall), and right now, when yeah, the Democratic-controlled Congress has given into the Republicans on most of the important issues and been about as disappointing as any one Congress can possibly be. It’d be tempting to blame the mid-70s crisis on Nixon, but really that was due to international problems, as was the one as Carter was leaving and Reagan was coming in.

So I’ve just recently become addicted to talk radio; namely Rush Limbaugh and some Glenn Beck. Both are conservative radio talk shows, so I’m not sure how much bias is involved but the image I’m getting of Obama is a giant moron. Surely there has to be SOMETHING good about him, otherwise who would follow him?
On the liberal flip side, I caught Olbermann’s shows the other night, and he’s basically making McCain and co. out to be giant morons as well.
