From long range Leon’s 66pp tends to beat out most other range attacks due to the way the hitbox works. If the opponent is crush reliant he can use 46p to get-in and 3k to keep out. 33P (crushing mid with very generous range) is also pretty applicable. You can always mix this up with tackle pressure if used sparingly.
Once he gets inside medium/short range a lot of options open up. P+K (mid), PPP (high), 2P+KP (mid), 6P+K (high and probably his worst move) are all frame advantage from what I remember. While Rising K gives an instant launch that can be combo’d into an air throw and has generous range at mid field.
He has a lot of knockback as well and his attacks are done in such a way that he can push an opponent back to a wall with ease and really make them pay for it with his command throws and air throw once he gets them there. And if he is anywhere near a wall, he WILL find it and put his opponent into it when you initiate the throw. If you desert falcon somebody into a half-wall, they will flop on the ground and Leon will get a free ground throw followup which all-in-all is going to result in about half lifebar.
When fighting leon you want to counter mid because most of his guard break options are coming from there… but if you do, you open yourself up to some of the most traumatizing throw punishment there is. If he loses momentum at close range he can also use 2F+K to avoid all highs and several mid attacks and screw with his opponents pressure.
Brad’s 6P+K has close hit properties against the wall, just like Jann Lee’s 66K. If we’re talking about exploding walls, the combo I mentioned before with the 4PP launch does 134 off a close hit and 117 off a normal hit. Works on heavies like Bass, Bayman, and Leon no problem. Brad’s 6P+K 4PP P+K 66PP does 143 against light weights(Christie and Lighter) against the wall. Jann Lee’s 66K 7K PP6P 6K46K does 149 against light weights. I don’t understand what you mean when you say Brad can’t get the damage.
Part of the reason I asked about the properties on Hi-Counter Holds was because of Brad’s High Punch Hold. On Hi-Counter hold near a wall he can do 4PP P+K 66PP against mid weights, and it’s 152 damage. He can’t get that juggle off mid weights normally. I know Jann Lee can get wall splats on both his mid punch and kick holds, but since he turns the opponent to an angle, he usually knocks them too far back to follow-up. Brad’s sends opponent straight into the wall. I know he’s not the only character with a hold that wall splats, but in terms of juggle damage I think he does more than average. Being able to do good damage against heavies isn’t something everyone can do.
He can’t get anything good that I know of from his Back Stance, because everything causes a wall splat. Someone told me there’s a way to cancel from his back stance to forward stance(fast enough to do one of his normal stance launchers) but I was never able to do that. They also said that Helena was able to get up from being grounded into her Bokuho stance(like Brad), and I wasn’t able to do that either.
Another part of the reason I asked about the tech rolling on Hi-Counter holds was that for Brad it seems that after certain holds and throws, he can go into the ground stance, and his moves will beat out anything the opponent does other than block or side walk. Without the frame data, I can only assume he doesn’t actually recover before the opponents do, and people are just being caught by surprise. Even if it’s just a gimmick being able to recover from certain knock downs changes the way people position themselves after certain juggles and throws.
I asked about the free cancelling frame data because sometimes against a wall with Brad I was able do 6P+K and then get 4KK to launch. I don’t know whether or not the timing is strict or it has to do with free cancelling. It was on flat stages. I’ve never been able to do it consistently, but once in a blue moon it happened.
I don’t know any of Brads NCs. If 4PP isn’t guaranteed from a wall splat, then I will completely understand Brad having bad damage. If not, then…?
This is all some pretty amazing stuff for Leon. 66PP is the Jab dash, and that is easily one of his best moves, and it has a ton of range. I don’t think Leon’s 3P is throw punishable, because Bayman’s isn’t. His wrK is a great move, although it lead to more damage in DOA2. It being high takes away some of it’s usefulness, but it’s another of his better moves.
I’m a little skeptical on the legitimacy of 46P. One of the reasons why I think that Leon isn’t good is because of his grunting. Bayman grunts a few frames before his moves will hit. Leon grunts at the start of his animations. He grunts distinctively for each of his moves effectively giving away his attacks. “O-OOOH!!” Means the 46P is coming. “AAAUGH!” means 6F+P is coming. A person with decent reflexes can just hold accordingly. Fortunately he doesn’t grunt for the tackle.
Shame on you guys for having all these great strats for Leon, and none for Brad.
Everytime I would try using 4PP on a Wall Splat i would whiff with Brad. Maybe I, and everyone else who competed, just never found the correct setups. I remember every couple of months one of the players like Perfect Legend would come in and say “You know… Brad is actually pretty good.” but in actual matches he’d falter and the player would go back to someone else. So. yeah…
EDIT: I’m thinking about getting the collectors edition but the the steel case doesnt look very cool from the pics I’ve seen and the cover of the game case(I am a fighter) doesnt look as good as the normal edition case. I really want the poster, art book, and sound track though…and to see Helena in her bikini >_>. Does anyone know if what the other side of the steel case looks like and if the normal case inside of it will have the updated cover art?
It’s not that surprising considering there was never really a big scene for DOA3. At least not in my area. You guys are actually getting me to go and practice Leon. Even though it looks like he’s not in DOA5.
Who is it at 1:46? It’s not Christie because the earrings are wrong.
Probably whoever Mila is, I’ve seen that name rumored as a new gal. She has something to do with Bayman and Leon - or so the story anyway.
The trailer was a little meh, but I’m totally stoked for the game and Alpha 152 is back. Maybe we’ll get to use her this time around?
Glad to finally see Helena and love the random select feature and DAT FACE! D3V posted; adorable!!
The charater models are amazing.
Helena English with dat French voice was what truly impressed me on the trailer as she was talking(takes cake as best of the dubbed voices so far with Zack being the worst imo). Alpha also appearing was a pleasant surprise. Was hyped on seeing Eliot, Brad Wong, and Gen Fu mixed in too.
Story mode is looking “fighting entertainment” feels like I’m watching a fast -paced action movie unfold from multiple fighter perspectives.
