It’s Joe Chill. It’s Joe Chill. It’s Joe Chill.
The Black Glove is Joe Chill and “Honor Jackson” is Joe Chill in disguise. The bum talks about having done nothing with his life except maybe having “saved one life”. That life is Bruce’s–in this issue and when Joe Chill spared Bruce’s life after killing his parents. In 673 Chill was self-deprecating about his life much like “Honor Jackson” is here.
Why did Joe Chill spare Bruce? Because Bruce’s face reminded him of his own son’s. What does “Honor Jackson” keep saying to Bruce? He keeps complimenting him on his face. He did this in his first appearance, saying “You have a very kind face” in 676, and immediately afterwards Tim asks Bruce, “When was the last time you heard THAT?” This is just an in-joke on Morrison’s part: the last time Bruce heard someone compliment his face was in 673, when he overheard Chill explaining why he didn’t shoot Bruce.
“Honor Jackson” apparently dying because of drugs that he purchased with the money Batman gave him (in 676) mirrors Joe Chill’s apparent death due to Batman as shown in 673. Both are suicides: “Honor Jackson” supposedly overdoses after Batman gives him the means (the money to purchase drugs with), and Joe Chill supposedly shoots himself after Batman hands him the gun. Except Joe Chill didn’t die–it isn’t shown in 673 but we (and Batman) hear the shot and ASSUME he’s dead. (What goes in a glove? A hand. What does the Joker deal in DC Universe #0? A dead man’s hand. A supposedly dead man’s hand is what is inside the Black Glove–and that person is Joe Chill. In DC Universe #0 the Joker tells Batman that the Black Glove is doing this to him “because he deserves it”. Batman would “deserve” payback for an act like driving someone to suicide, don’t you think?)
Why the name “Honor Jackson”? The answer to that is the reason behind the genesis of the whole Batman saga. Bruce only lived, and went on to become Batman, because of Joe Chill’s decision not Honor his own son by not killing Bruce. What was Joe Chill’s son’s name? I’m going to take a wild guess and say that it was Jack–Jack Napier, the Joker. We’ve often heard that the Joker is who he is because of Batman, but this twist would also mean that Bruce Wayne only lived and went on to become Batman because of the other little boy who went on to become the Joker.
The shadowy figure in the flashback, who injects Bruce with heroin and crystal meth–That’s not Dr. Hurt. That’s Joe Chill as well. Look at the silhouette–it doesn’t match Hurt: the collar is higher and the hair is different and parted on the other side. (And we’ve already seen Hurt on the previous page, so what would the point of putting him in shadow now? The backgrounds aren’t even the same. Hurt has Bruce surrounded by demons, but on the next page we only see Bruce and the shadowy figure alone, in front of the Batcomputer.) Who else in this issue wears a coat with a higher collar like that? “Honor Jackson” does–just look at the silhouette of “Honor” telling Bruce to “Walk it off” on the page facing the shadowy figure. This figure injects Bruce with drugs. Who else is responsible in this issue for getting Bruce drugs? “Honor Jackson”. The two figures are the same, and they’re both Joe Chill. The clincher is when the shadowy figure asks Bruce “How long has it been?” and tells him he’s “grown”. While the whole readership is worried that this is Bruce’s father, it’s not–it’s Joe Chill, who hasn’t seen a grown (and unmasked) Bruce Wayne in decades."[/details]
