I’m curious, are “girls’ tournaments” a recent development in the tourney scene? I personally think it’s kind of an insult, implying that the women can’t play the game competitively with the men. If they don’t practice as much, fine, and I do understand that it’s easier to get the ladies interested if they don’t have to worry about getting trounced, but then why isn’t there a Beginners Only tournament. Any guy who just started playing, or doesn’t practice as much, doesn’t have his own special tournament to enter. He still has to get in there with the rest of the guys and get raped (so to speak!) by better players.

The novelty of a female only fighting game tournament is very insulting to me. The women and the men should be playing together! Co-ed tournaments now, co-ed tournaments forever!

It’s not like the female fighting game characters can only fight each other. They get in there and beat the crap outta the guys, and in turn get the crap beat outta them by the guys. What about the real women? Do they not deserve this same respect and opportunity?!!!

I know exacly what you mean , I mean the women fought to have the same right as men they should still be playing in the same tournaments if thats the case. Now I could understand if it was a “Beginner only tourney” then yeah. But for the simple they wont have those is kind of stupid to be honest.

I also found that to be a little on the sexist side if you ask me. In tournaments if a girl has entered and I have to play them I still show no mercy. Here is a prime example , At seasons me and D.Legend were talking , and then the girl he had to play against came to him and asked him who he played. I dont know if he told her but she was swearing up and how how she was really new… But when the match started she strated doing EX seismos cancel into burning kicks and shit. I saw derricks eyes get white and then he went on full throttle. So I mean that why I find taking it easy on girl players bullshit , you want to play in a real tournament you will get played and treated like a real player.

  1. There’s an extremely small number of girls actually playing in tourneys to begin with.

  2. There’s an even smaller number of those who are good.

  3. There’s a microscopic number of those who are pro.

I think they do all girls tourneys to get more girls interested in the games. Lets be honest, tourneys and arcades are mostly a sausage fest, so hosting something where girls are encouraged to come out and be featured helps get them involved. That Ladies of SF4 tourney? The majority of those girls were established players girlfriends (and no that does not mean they were good by default), who got partnered up with some players and either learned the game or improved on it. I think it comes down to a numbers and novelty thing. You’ll get more females at an all female tournament because it is less threatening, and you’ll get more hype for the event because its exclusive.

There are female players in Japan that can hang, in multiple games, but you don’t hear about them as often, probably because they don’t make SBO appearances, but they are still really good.

As for the U.S. its just behind, that’s all. There’s a pro female in Tekken, and Sherryjenix (famous for the “no you cannot” line) just played in the recent Denjin 3s tourney and her team did pretty well.

I wouldn’t sweat this issue too much, sports and video games will for the most part be male dominated, unless Cooking Mama on the Wii becomes a tourney staple, then we’re fucked.

Nathan: this is why I stay away from the “gamer girl” scene. I’d rather hang with the fellas and learn something than go to an all-female tournament. I think I’m a decent female player, and it wouldn’t be fun to go play with them.

I’m not trying to say I’m an awesome lady player, but I think it would be like robbery if we had an all female tournament at AL for Marvel or 4.

I’m all for it too. It’s just that for priority’s sake, 4 is still top, then tekken, then st/hdr. I don’t really have a whole lot of time before NEC so i’d like to primarily play 4, but learning tekken is intriguing to me because it’s so different from street fighter.
