I think this topic of cinematic/pretty graphics has been beaten to concentrated juice. As long as people keep buying into what ever, the momentum will still continue to move to that certain direction whether a few people get pissed about it or some developer/what ever the fuck this David Jaffe does will say at some circle jerk conference. I personally don’t care if the next gen systems are nothing but choose your own adventure type games or rehashed COD shit, or Super Ultra Capcom vs Your checking account. I probably will invest in an arcade cabinet and call it a day on video gaming.
David Jaffe is not just some random guy. He’s one of the most famous, successful, and influential game designers of all time.
Agreed. I have no idea why people are confused when I tell them I just bought 2 and 3 for the multiplayer. In addition to being the most fun part of the games, I like it because I buy games I WANT TO PLAY, NOT WATCH IN MOTION. Gameplay in single player is just some super-short, scripted shit linking cinemas together. Lack of a mode that is fun and completely playable (multiplayer) is why I’m passing on the Vita version). If I want to burn battery watching movies, I’ll just watch them from the memory card, thank you very much.
Demon/Dark Souls will rock you, son.
First off don’t put words in my post because I didn’t say this David Jaffe is some random. You are going to have to give examples on why this guy is “the most famous, successful, and influential gamer designers of all time” because from what I see on wiki, all this guy did was the twisted metal series and god of war, which I’ve played only twisted metal 2 and not even touched GoW.
Anyone who thinks games “should” be this-or-that is a fool. This includes corporate suits who think games should be full of cutscenes and QTEs, pretentious game designers who think games should be pure gameplay, and everyone in between.
Games dont need to follow any pattern or model. They can be whatever they want. The more different types of games we have, the better. Sometimes I like a barely-interactive movie, or visual novel, and sometimes I want pure action. Sometimes I want singleplayer, sometimes I want multiplayer. If anything, the notion that a FG has to be a certain way, or an FPS has to be a certain way, is doing more damage to genres than the half-assed “innovation” that does take place.
As for games being too expensive these days due to graphics, I blame copyright/patents. We’ve seen with games like Counterstrike, DoTA, Team Fortress, etc that excellent things can be made by relatively few people, if they have a free and easy source of engine and assets.
But when it comes to commercial games, just how much reinventing of the wheel goes on every day? I used to work in the games industry - every single company has its own crappy set of software tools doing exactly the same thing as every other company, developed in-house and maintained just enough to barely work.
Every game on a Nintendo console has to write their own procedures for save game UI and other stuff, because Nintendo can’t be bothered to put a framework or OS on their consoles. (Luckily PS3/360 are a bit better).
And don’t get me started on artwork. I shudder to think how many man-hours have been wasted modeling AK-47s over and over for a hundred different games, or random rocks, bushes, walls and trees.
As a society we need to find a way to incentivise creation and research, but in a way so that they share their results so that others can build upon them, rather than everyone reinventing wheels. (or even worse, inventing wheels and then suing anyone else that tries to invent their own wheel…)
I blame the FPS boom.
My mistake. It’s been awhile since I beat Doom 1 and 2 but I’ll take your word for it, I don’t have any intention to revisit Doom for awhile.
Well said:tup: But I think you forgot the fact that many people (especially on SRK) like BEWD has said are passionate about gaming and like to use the internet as a means to [S]bitch [/S]vent their opinion.
This. This. Cosign. This.
I understand the position that some people think developers have done a lot more worthwhile work with a much more limited tool set prior to 3d gaming’s dominance. But clinging to the 90’s like a security blanket while condescending to people who don’t have the same opinion is not only childish but the kind of attitude that perpetrates the lingering negative stereotypes of gamers.
As much as I loved the 90’s I also recognize that this generation brings along more options for gamers than we’ve ever had before and regardless of one’s grievances with this current era, having more options is universally beneficial.
So you get a group of people who who say “gaming died a long time ago, Super Mario World 4 eva” and then turn around and complain about how linear Uncharted 3 and other games are that “guide” you through the game?
What?
And when was being guided through a story a bad thing? Sandbox games where you can pick what order you play missions make loose ends and messy storytelling bad, obvious and predictable.
I don’t really agree with this at all and I love Jaffe’s work. Games shouldn’t be ridiculously cinematic and detract from gameplay, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with story driven games. Games, like the various differing story telling mediiums, allow you to do certain things another can’t. What you can tell/show in a movie isn’t going to be the same as a novel ans vice versa. Emotionally investing the player in the characters around them and they have direct control of can be huge and very impactful much more so than watching InsertMovieStarHere in a movie. Video games aren’t getting away from what made them video games, they’re evolving with the new technologies available to help flesh out the message certain designers have.
Bitching about other people’s bitching hmmm…novel concept =P.
Although I completely agree with you, Jaffe’s main point was that he thinks many developers are getting too wrapped up in message delivery and forgetting that these are games first and foremost.
I kind of agree with Jaffe, but at the same time, who says we can’t have both?
MGS3 has great game engine and great story. The game pushed its moral agenda while still being a good game.
I also thought that the airport scene in MW2 was crazy insane. Although it was only a small part of the game, the gameplay affected the morality.
It just sucks that not many developers can do the same.
MGS3 also didnt seem like it stopped you every time you turned the corner for a codec call.
MGS 2 and 4 were overbearing. 20 minute cutscenes? My goodness…
Most people in this thread? lol but yeah I totally agree with you.
