Damsel in Distress: The Discussion (Kickstarter Feminist plays video games)

The most lawl-worthy part of this guy’s video was when he tried to assert that Anita’s video was ‘academic’ in nature.

Academic endeavors should focus on objectivity, exploring possible alternative perspectives and rationale in the hopes of furthering the pursuit of truth whether scientific or philosophical.

Anita’s videos come off to me as propaganda, stating conclusions based on a myriad of unfounded assumptions and ignoring any competing evidence that might lead one to an alternate conclusion. It’s not meant to inform, it’s meant to persuade.

And just to make my viewpoint perfectly clear: Academic =/= Propaganda

Even persuasion demands an acknowledgment of the opposing evidence.

My source? Arist…ettle? Aristuttle? Something like that.

At first I didn’t think the dude was a white knight but when he talked about how factually accurate the video was without stating any of the logical contradictions proved in this video I was like, fuck this dumbass. I still don’t think calling him a white knight is nearly as accurate as calling him a dumbass. Anyways this criticism analysis is one of the most intelligent and well argued videos I’ve ever seen on youtube which is refreshing, because 99% of these types of analyses on youtube amount to someone trying way too hard to sound like they actually know what it is they’re ranting about.

I really don’t understand why some of you have a problem with playing a game that stars someone who’s not a white guy. It’s not something I ever thought of before I heard of the tropes vs women video nor is it something I care much about even now, but it wouldn’t be the worst change in the world to have more diversity in game protagonists, and anyone who thinks it is is as retarded as this Anita bitch.

who are you addressing here? does anyone ever express this opinion??

Because we had to be idiots over the whole issue by sending threats/DDOSing her site/making a game where you beat her up, and as a result of that she got more support.

The main issue I have is that you can’t bring up the subject without excessive backlash. You don’t even have to be a feminist. Any female who does it will and has been attacked. What are we afraid of that we go to such lengths to shoot down an issue that’s worth addressing? It’s a problem that runs much deeper than game characters.

AP and the 5 others disagreed with my above quote 2 of whom also liked the “no to all 3” part of AP’s post.

lol didn’t expect one of the people throwing out stupid strawman arguments to actually be agreeing with her

You guys on that white knighting are silly. Yes, there is a lack of decent female protagonists in gaming. You know why? The same reason there are a lack of female protags in any other form of media… a lack of women.
Like it or not, this is a male-dominated industry, much like the movie and comic industry, coupled with the fact that the majority audience is mostly young males aged 17-34*(this has begun to change in the last few years, but this is what the status quo was for decades)*, and you can see why games that appeal to females are few and far between.
That previous sentence is also funny because females are the dominant demographic in several gaming genres, such as party games, simulations, puzzle games, and are an increasing presence in MMORPGs and other multiplayer games, especially those that allow for deep customization, such as making your own avatar.

The best way to change this? Ironically, the females who feel this trend needs to change need to stop waiting for men*(who either do not notice or do not care for their issues)* to do it for them and start taking programming classes and writing courses and create the games they demand.

Of course, this will never happen, since the most important pillar of neo-feminism is to blame and complain, but never explain. Why would you offer constructive solutions to problems that don’t really exist when you can just con idiots into giving you $150k for free? I applaud Miss Sarkeesian’s clever strategy of fleecing fools who pay her lip service any bit of serious mind.

You keep saying “we”. I could be wrong, but it seems like you’re lumping a lot of people in with a small number of socially retarded dumbasses.

Why would she need 150k for something she could have recorded on her cellphone and then edit on her computer with the movie editor default program?

Did she offer thank you messages to donators, so the neckbeard white knights could scramble to have contact with a girl?

Most definitely she spent $0 on this at all

Just stupid

If i get my girlfriend to film something for kickstarter about funding a dream vacation i bet we could make 500g if i spam it on facebook/srk/eventhubs and kotaku and gamefaqs

Seriously they donated to just give her money

Bet she has some new dresses and purses

I’m assuming you’re referring to King9999 being a “white knight” but I think that term in this thread at least is reserved for that bitchass moviebob for making that video. My respect for screw attack went down a peg for putting up that garbage. Also it sounds like you’re calling me a white knight for saying it would be nice to see more diversity in gaming (read: not just women, but minorities, weirdass aliens, and everything in between), if that’s the case you don’t know what the term white knight means and you’re an idiot. If not then disregard the last sentence. As for your other point, even in a male dominated industry other mediums have somewhat recognized that not everyone wants to see the white savior in everything all the time.

What’s the moral of this thread? feminists are retarded (but still can get teh hate fuck if hot) and latino spider man is cool.

You sneak in some dumb as comment inbetween a bunch of bullshit, acting as if it was truth. Really, the only choice women have is from TWO game series, for reals?

When the reality is that you have more MALE playing FEMALE characters in games than there are FEMALE players in existence lol. Shut that shit up you wannabe cracker. Can’t believe you took time away from participating in your Indian gang rape after school club to post this drivel.

Aristotle

Semantics, really. I just used ‘white knight’ in a rush. Guess I should have said, “You gentlemen with contrary opinions essentially arguing for change are going about it in the wrong way.” You want to play games that star someone other than a thirty-something white male with dark hair? Stop buying games with those archetypes in them.

The games I’ve played over the years have been put me in some very diverse shoes… I’ve been an Italian plumber who jumps better than Jordan, I’ve actually BEEN Michael Jordan and several other sports stars, a blue hedgehog, multiple species of aliens, a little blue robot who mimics his enemies, a woman who raids tombs, as well as a man in a fedora who raids tombs, several different martial arts masters, both male and female, a one-woman army who decimates entire planets single-handedly, secret agents, super heroes, kings, princes(and princesses!), a certain Umbran witch who puts most of those others to shame with her feats, and even been God Himself on more than one occasion… Gaming protagonists are actually quite diverse, at least more so than the leads in many other entertainment genres.

As addicted as your bitch is to dat extra white sauce she’s had her fill for the next few minutes so I have a little free time.

If you think my opinion in this thread is contrary, arguing, or “wrong” then you really misunderstood my simple point. Also when you put it like that you’re right there is already a lot of diversity in gaming history I should have clarified, in the past 2 generations we’re seeing more and more of Matt Damon and that’s cool but a Ving Rhames once in a while couldn’t hurt lol. Also totally agree with respecting the hustle, 150k? Damn. I need to get in on this, maybe I’ll make a kickstarter video series explaining how psychologically and emotionally damaging Tropes vs Women is, I’ll be rich!

You and I are in agreement that more women need to step up and get involved in game development if they want to change things. But we also need to be able to accept them.

Our demographic being what it is, I don’t think a lot of us are mature enough to take certain subjects seriously, and are content to just make sarcastic remarks or post dumb pics.

She doesn’t need $150k. She only needed $6k. But the Internet being what it is, some people took things too far, and people sympathized with her. I can’t hate her just because some people felt strongly enough about her treatment.

This.

What anita and her supporters and people in favor of her arguments neglect and intentionally fail to mention is that these industries are male dominated because they were created, developed and sustained by males. The communities that formed around games and comics and other geek stuff were all passionate fans that loved the content…and 11/10 times these people were guys. In some cases their passion and love turned into a drive which compelled them to become involved in these industries thus beginning the new wave of developers, writers, artist and so on and so forth. Having a say in the direction of a community or business requires you to actually become involved with it…so when women like anita bitch about the lack of strong female characters they never stop to think that maybe just maybe the simple solution is to tell women to go on a career path that will enable to create and develop their own games.

Part of the problem is like you said, a lack of constructive solutions in favor of constant blaming and finger pointing. Women need to either develop more agency and initiative so that they can get the games they want or stop bitching because the constant complaining only serves to alienate people away from their cause or taking them seriously…only children cry and complain expecting the adults around them to solve their problems. This is all besides the point though because no one should be taking this bitch serious to begin with. She has had experience and training in marketing and some previous studies in feminist literature so she built this whole video series as a way to make a quick buck through simple repetition of feminist talking points.

I agree here and this is one thing I hope these video(s) help the industry change even though I disagree with a lot of the viewpoints she presents.

I’ve always felt that, even in the indie scene, many developers never really embraced crazy ideas for games especially in regards to characters. I kind of put the “blame” on the move towards making thins more realistic and logical when it comes to games. Looking at other topics on this issue I always come across quotes that say stuff like “but it wouldn’t be realistic”, but other portions of the game in discussion throw realism out of the window so what is the issue.

I sometimes want more developers to say fuck logic, this is a game, and it is perfectly possible for a male teenage black chef from Sweden and a female 33 year old yo-yo champion from Mars to take on a army of dinosaur chef fighter pilots and Martian astrojax competitors living in Canada. I guess I should get on that since I can program, too bad my spriting skills are shitty…

@Danx

Most women wont do that because it takes effort, and today’s woman is not about effort or doing anything that involves sweating or thinking. Unless somehow a bunch of old spanish women decide to get into the industry. But does anyone really want to play a laundromat simulator besides SoVi3t?

I wouldn’t say all forms of media.

Television especially has a lot of shows that fall into the now cliche “Smart quick witted wife paired with the bumbling idiot husband”. Essentially shows like this focus around the husband doing some hair brained scheme that always backfires so the wife can tell him how retarded he is.

But if you want a really big example of men being treated poorly in television, look no further than a Lifetime movie. Your typical male in a Lifetime movie is almost always a mild irritant or antagonist to the female lead. If he’s not directly against her he’s somehow demeaning, doubting, or in some way inhibiting her.

So an example might be a loving husband who is somehow too dense to realize what’s really going, but his wife sure as fuck knows. And by the time the credits roll she’ll have her chance to say told you so and solve the problem without any of his help.

Males aren’t always depicted like this, but virtually every single one of the criticisms Miss Anita had toward gaming can also be applied to the majority of Lifetime movies. Probably because Lifetime knows what gets them ratings, much like Nintendo knows what sells games.
