Did this:

lolsmash
I wrote a scathing/sarcastic comment about smash, but I don’t think that there’s anybody left to be offended by it. …I guess I won?
I’d like to hear what that comment was. Myself, I have so much dirt on both the game and the community I wouldn’t even know where to begin in all honesty. When I say community, It’s not just limited to the players (e.g. bracket manipulation leading Brawl getting removed from MLG)- but even the TOs. Poor seeding, bracket favoritism is very common. I know the so called “overheads” of the ruleset would often change the rules to favor their own character such as how many times you can grab the ledge… and in doing so it backfires to screw over other players. This was one of the biggest travesty in the community aside from taking years to ban a character with zero bad MUS, unrivaled priority, totally frame safe, ect (Meta knight)
look at 1:44. Then 5:00. Yes, the player just ran the clock grabbing the ledge for that long. The shady TO lifted the limit on ledge grabbing because it favors his character. Then this player had this happen to him. I heard he threw a chair after this match.
And with chair throwing, we have controller throwing into (breaking) TV rages:

Yeah Smash is cute.
I don’t care as much about banning metaknight one way or another. Some games even have individual techniques banned from competitive play for whatever reason. In mvc2 Gambit could fly off the screen and not return, or in kof11 Oswald could do a meaty unblockable repeatable trap; both of these were banned from play in most tournies. On the other hand, banning Metaknight or not, I have zero interest in competitive smash or trying to compete with “competitive smash players.”
Either it’s a competitive game or it’s not. If you have to say “You can only do X 50 times” I feel that the game fails the competitive game test. That alone makes me have zero interest in playing the game and trying to win at it. The other night when you had 6 seconds on the clock and I stopped pressing buttons because you couldn’t throw me to death in that amount of time springs to mind. At that point I’d reached a checkmate scenario unless you got a clean hit leading into a combo and then a mixup. Knowing this I didn’t even attempt to tech a throw. Well, when you put a timer on smash, the whole game becomes that stupid checkmate scenario so you can make up arbitrary rules to do whatever or you can play the game without intending to win and just to have fun beating up your friends. I might do the second but I have no interest in keeping a damn number in my head for how long I can keep somebody checkmated before I arbitrarily lose. If I was going to play Smash I’d keep track of how many edge clings I’d taken and know how many seconds I can burn to hit 49 edge grabs and win by timeout.
The smash “community” (I hate that term) didn’t help me like the game either. Wobbles picked a sub-par character, ice climbers, and won evo south. I was informed while watching that Iceclimbers were bad, that this other guy was a top player, etc, and was pleased to see an underdog pull off an upset. Afterward, smash players bitched at him for it. Whether they were mad because a player they didn’t know won, because a character that was bad won, or because their hero Chris or whomever lost was irrelevant. SF works the exact opposite way. Clockw0rk and Duc were considered gods for competing with unorthodox strategies in marvel 2. When Gamerbee became the most consistant placer in American tournies during SSF4 people looked to his character in a new light and realized that they’d sat on Adon and assumed he was bad rather than finding out what made him tick. I don’t recall a single boo as Poongko’s Seth wrecked Daigo’s Yun. Smash players? They just banned the hard to set up infinite that won the tournament as they were a bunch of whine-y babies who didn’t want to play a game that was organic and could grow but preferred things stayed status quo for all times with their top tier players immortal gods and nobody able to challenge them.
As for my sarcastic response to smash, it was more referring to how the same people in the same breath would tell me that Smash is the easiest game to play without complicated shit like “qcf” motions/etc, and that it was also the deepest fighter that was the hardest to be good at. Neither of these things were true then and they aren’t true now.
edit: I actually have no problem with the guy running the tourney trying to play the game without scrubtastic rules of “you can only grab the edge X times” in play as long as those rules remained for all matches of the tournament. It sure makes the game look stupid, but it looks stupid on its own merits rather than being dumb due to the fact that you have to make up imaginary rules of etiquette to play the game that you want rather than the game that you have.
Yes, what you pointed out is the end-all argument regarding Smash not being a legitimate fighter. There are too many aspects that require regulation (e.g. items, stages, ect) to have the “ideal” competitive environment you speak of which pretty much voids the idea that Smash is, or ever was meant to be taken seriously.
I actually remember the event you mentioned, there was a LOT of salt and drama. Drama is that scene’s specialty. This was another classic… (post 87)
The “top” Smash player M2K apparently fancys uh… how do I put this… doing stuff to people’s beds when they house him. I personally know many people who housed him before and they all tell me he does the same thing (they wouldn’t lie about matters like this, either.) Very common for him to go to his room and lock the door. He finally got caught and exposed here. I think he has aspergers in his defense but… COME ON!
…
unintended pun is unintended. But that post and few pages after it are pure gold. When I first looked it over, this was pretty much my reaction:
As I recall, “wobbling” (neutral throw with ice climbers with one climber on either side) became outlawed by smash board regulations, but in return they made Wobble a mod and gave him access to the coveted “back room boards” where prols like myself cannot begin to imagine the wonders within. Why, he can even help make THE TIER LISTS! …tier lists according to the jerks on a website that were then labelled fact and non-arguable by the scrubs that aren’t allowed in there.
This made me Lol. Had to quote this for truth. I think you are referring to the “Backroom.” Last time I was at that site the Backroom was mostly composed of frauds who overridden the community poll which voted in favor to ban Meta knight. Can you guess which character most of those backroom members used?! Yes! Meta knight! But, I shouldn’t bash them too much. If they didn’t help make a terrible game worse, I may of never picked up Street Fighter!
edit: And what… three years later Meta knight is finally being banned starting sometime in mid January? OH, the flip-flop! Yeah, those kids clearly had/have no credibility. Blind leading the blind.
