okay i’ve been reading through the thread and there is a lot of discussion about if daigo had some secret plot to make this all happen like a movie or if it was truly genuine.
i wasn’t there at evo and i haven’t seen any other daigo matches from the event so i will have to believe it when people say that he constantly taunts after supers and just controls the match. that’s totally understandable because that’s what most players do when they know that they can get an easy win on an opponent. however, in high level tournament play this usually isn’t the case. any mistake can lead to a peace out.
what i say is that daigo was indeed looking for something flashy in the end (but not exactly as it happened because he would have taken a HUGE risk purposely taking that final hit to make his meter at 1%) while jwong was clouded with “i just gotta get a hit and i get the chip for the win” so he wasn’t paying attention to the possibility that daigo could in fact parry his entire super. however, jwong had the advantage of the mixup because daigo was swaying back and forth on the defensive (sort’ve taunting jwong with his own style) and had pretty much no life. jwong couldn’t have jumped in because he would be shoryukened (but not totally dead yet). that could have opened up for a reset or some ground game. but i guess jwong caught a glimpse of daigo’s sway pattern (and with the backup support of the possibility that daigo missed a parry or red parry) and tried to catch him on a block motion. but he soon realized that it wasn’t going to be so easy and daigo took the win.
now there is no guarantee that this is what happened, just my opinion. whatever did happen, it is still a true demonstration of skill and the pressures of high level play by both players. every match counts!
vpt_whatup…for the most part I agree. It wasnt as if Diago was trying to go from some dramtic win. At least not to the fullest extent that it did happen. (this is all speculation because none of us is in his head) But like you said in high level tourny play you dont take chances with the wrong person.
Because I have the whole match I will say that when you see Diago sort of swaying back and forth most say that it is his way of trying to bait Chuns super out. The thinking being that if you are in the frame of advancing, then parrying the super is just that much easier. (ie if you parry a move that is coming at you with the first part of a DP motion…tapping forward, then the you dont have to repeat the motion for the DP, just the FB motion for the rest of it to come out)
Diago is still The Beast from the east. But Jwo definately pushed him to the limits. IMO
Daigo tries to make shows??? Are we still talking about one of Japan’s most quietest players? Daigo clearly goes for a win not a show.

I think we have a chance in all games, the older games because we still have experienced players, and the newer games because the gameplay is a bit simpler (save mvc2, which japan hasn’t competed well in to begin with).
No. In the first USA vs Japan Daigo went out of his way to finish all of his 3s matches with a shoryuken. He almost lost one because of it.

Finally saw the vid. Daigo baited him. Yes Daigo was sandbagging, but consider that he was already up a game, and felt confident that he could have taken a third, had it come to it.
Regarding all of this stuff about how Justin is USA’s best hope against Japan…um, FFA aside, anyone remember Evo last year, where Ricky Ortiz beat Daigo? But it didn’t count, because it was judgement? And then after the stick broke 8 times during their match and after 100,000 minutes of not playing, they played a final game, and decided to play one final game after they’d played the final round of the final match in their set, and THEN Daigo won? Sounds more impressive than Daigo beating Wong 2-0, and baiting, and susequently parrying his SAII.
