Custom JLF Springs

I meant if you put in cherries or zippies, what spring would feel best and which would feel most like the stock?

I have cherries installed in my jlf and the ls 55 spring seems to be the best match ( a little stiffer than the stock jlf) not sure where this would match up w/ the customs maybe the 3x

I’d still be interested in getting samples to see what they could do on both the LS-32 and LS-40 joystick levers.
As it is, I think all the Japanese joystick levers I’ve tried have been on the low side of resistance and could do with a bit more tension.
I definitely think they’re all on the loose side in stock condition with the JLF being the worst offender of all the control levers I’ve tried.

I’ve been successful getting the LS-32 to a more comfortable resistance level for me – I like to play retro games and frankly the JLF is horrible where I’m concerned for CPS-2/SNK fighting games – but it’s somewhat inconsistent across the board because there’s no way with stacking or screwing/twisting springs together that it’ll be the same for every example of LS-32(-01) that I use.

I gave up trying to ratchet the tension on the LS-40 because of the space issue on that joystick. The spring retainer just can’t hold more than a spring with LS-32 spec. Only the one LS-32 spring ever compressed nicely without having an overly stiff result that lost all the LS-40’s mobility. A stiffer spring that could fit the shaft (spring retainer) would definitely help in that case.

(* I still like the LS-40-01 and would buy more if a) I had more spare cash; and b) it were easier to get ahold of them… I don’t think I’d have 3 LS-40 levers installed in joystick bases if I didn’t like them in spite of some technical issues!)

I’m otherwise surprised the LS-40(-01) isn’t more popular among the mod/arcade stick community because it’s in some respects better built than either the JLF or LS-32(-01) and could have a better reputation with somewhat more resistance… Throw is definitely one of the issues that caused me to give up on the JLF – you just can’t get around it on that joystick and the mods I’ve seen to address this have gotten ridiculous and require too much work to be practical and will wear off after some time IMHO.

It’s much more difficult to do dash moves consistently with a JLF than it is the LS-32 or LS-40. I like to use Demitri in Darkstalkers so I know the JLF definitely is NOT the joystick for those games! The LS-40 takes even less input/has less throw than the LS-32 but would be closer to perfect with a bit more resistance…

Have you tried the 58- i find it to feel very similar to the ls 40 however it feels just a bit stiffer and i think i prefer it with the octagon gate/ which is not an option on the 40

So… I take it the springs are sized for JLF but wouldn’t necessarily fit the Seimitsu joysticks?
I think they would go around the thinner shaft Seimitsus but the issue would then be the spring retainer not being sized for JLF-type springs…

I have one of the 9lb springs…all I can say it’s Ridiculous LOL I can’t play on it but My Brother was able too…He likes it but he finds to be a bit too much…He Likes the 6lb spring, He is currently using that. I’m using your 3lb with Kowal Custom Actuator for Short throw and I’m Loving it. Thank you For creating the Springs!

I just put a good two days into the 2lbs spring.
It’s not bad, but I felt like I would want to swap out the switches with the Cherry or Zippy kit, I’ll probably order the Cherry Kit next check (Do I need to order the harness separately?)
On the positive, I found that my IADs were coming out noticably lower and cleaner than I normally get them on my stock JLFs. my 2xQCFS and dashes came out consistently too (those aren’t an issue ever normally, but it’s worth note I guess)
On the negative, my hand cramped, really badly after four or five games. I also occasionally felt like I would move the stick and get right to where I would normally actuate the stick and then get hung up on the switch for whatever reason, I’m gonna grab one of the cherry kits next check and see if that makes a difference.

There should be no different in switch actuation as the actuator has not changed at all, or it’s relationship to the shaft and switches (we are doing new actuators, and expect them next month)

I ordered one sample of each spring for testing. They’re excellent. I subsequently ordered enough to supply the entire local crew in NC.

Since you asked about the 9lb spring, GentlemanThief, a nationally recognized VF player, already mods his sticks to a similar level of resistance, so there -is- a market for that degree of tension.

I was going to suggest that you make custom actuators a la Kowal’s, but I see you’re way ahead of me. Any update on when those will be available?

Drift, we are doing the same things with actuators. I found a vendor and placed an order for incremental larger actuators in 4 sizes. I’m hoping they arrive in 1-2 weeks.

So the 2.0 would be like having two default JLF springs?
