Continuation Rule?

I will say this though as a slight positive to MLG:

It’s good that less popular but still good games like MK, KoF, and SC have an avenue to getting more exposure, because in this Capcom-centric community (not SRK, just in general), they have no fucking chance

At the end of day, yeah. Too bad they keep talking about how they’d rather Capcom games.

You are speaking as if they have a better chance in a Starcraft-centric community…

I really don’t see the problem with this rule. So it makes double jeopardy matches unfair to the loser it sets up a lot more of an exciting comeback which might excite non-FG fans. Other than that are they doing anything else weird with their FG tourneys?

^
they are also overlapping dates with NCR…

And ECT this year.

MLG’s blatant disregard for the way the community likes to run things is a big enough reason for me to fight against it.

They have no regard for other major events and they have no regard for rulesets.

The last thing we need is to support MLG consuming fighting games.

“The first round is data.” It’s not uncommon in fighting games for players to experiment a little more in the beginning of a set just to see how their opponent reacts to specific situations, even if it might mean putting themselves at a slight disadvantage to start with. It’s not too different in principle than, say, the decision making process in a match where you might elect to take a hit for minor damage now if it means not being pushed into the corner later where things could get even worse. The continuation rule fucks with that kind of thinking because it puts too much importance on the here and now.

A single game of Street Fighter isn’t decided by who has the most combined remaining HP throughout the number of rounds played; it’s decided by who wins the most rounds.
A set of Street Fighter isn’t decided by who wins the most rounds; it’s decided by who wins the most games.
The winner of a double elimination tournament is whoever can get through the bracket without losing 2 distinct sets; arbitrarily combining two sets into one extended set fucks with the format and is inconsistent if not outright unfair.

I disagree with you (for all of the reasons that I already posted), but you do make an interesting point!

My direct counterpoint to your perspective, though, is that (it has been commonly accepted here that) the Japanese players who come here to play with us have tended to express a preference for “our” tourney format anyway: double elim bracket, best X out of 2X-1 games per set.

“Their” format (single game, single elim) is optimized for organizational purposes in that it requires the least amount of time and equipment to run. Their tournaments have classically always been held in arcades on arcade cabinets so this is a pervasive issue throughout their scene’s history. The new breed of console tournaments being held in their country has demonstrated a very ready willingness to try out other formats.

I want to be clear that there is absolutely nothing wrong with their format (I like it!), and I also want to specifically emphasize that the real-world feasibility of a format is arguably the first and most important aspect to consider when planning an event. On competitive merits alone, though, I think that the vast majority of tournament players do prefer our format to theirs.

I think we all agree with this on two counts (both of which other people have already posted in this thread): for one, I don’t think anything could make them change their minds about it at this point and, for two, it’s far from being a problem serious enough to deter anyone from actually attending their events.

Like Mr. X mentioned, I’m more interested in things like seeing how their new monitors (BenQ GL2450HM) perform. I believe last year the Tekken community had to deal with laggy monitors at a number of their events.

hahaha

I tried looking this up out of curiosity, but couldn’t find anything about upcoming mlg events (I just keep finding info about the event coming this weekend). Where did you find out about an mlg event conflicting with ect?

I saw it posted on team liquid
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=306488

Winter Championship: March 23-25 (Columbus)
Spring Championship: June 8-10
Summer Championship: August 24-26
Fall Championship: November 2-4

I just hope it’s on the WC so each coast has something that weekend

Don’t worry they stopped, They gave up on Capcom games 3 months ago. No more meetings. Really glad other titles get this chance, instead of Capcom.

There is clearly room to disagree with the continuation rule by pointing out flaws in the system, which many people have been doing, however I wanted to point out that its not really legit to complain about the rule because its not traditional double elim. IMO the debate should be framed around the actual pros and cons of the rule and not “we use double elim and this isn’t standard double elimination”

Its similar to the hitbox vs joystick debate where you had people defnding joysticks simply because they were what we had been using all this time and not because it was the best format.

I just seems a little odd that people not only feel that they are owed a second chance, but that that second chance must adhere to a strict set of rules based on…well nothing. The rules we’re sticking to are about as arbitrary as the new rule. I mean in KOF you can change order on a win, in marvel you can’t. I SFxT you can’t use gems, or console only character, even though the tournament standard is PS3. We’re literally making up rules as we go along so acting like the format rule is somehow unchangeable because someone made it up a long time as opposed to this year is just wacky.

But yeah, I’m not defending the continuation rule I’m just saying if you’re going to be against it at least have a good logical reason.

 No they didn’t. This whole thing is an extremely blatant attempt to circle their wagons around Capcom and say “you’re move”.

Spring Championship is in Anaheim. Summer Championship is in Raleigh (and will be in direct competition with Summer Jam).

Summer Jam is announced?

The summer jam date was announced at the end of Winter brawl.
Also if the schedule of games stays the same that one much bigger indicator of things to come since both tournaments will be on the same coast that time.

Unless somehow Capcom fire’s Seth Killian, MLG will never get Capcom games, So nothing to worry about…

I dunno what youre referencing but if thats true thats the first thing I’ve heard about S-kill thats endeared him to me in a while.
