The really stupid thing about removing Other OS is that it isn’t going to stop anyone capable of hacking the PS3 from hacking the PS3. It’s also not going to do much to prevent your average user from using any hack that becomes available because most of them are going to wait for a “consumer” version of the hack anyway.
Banning people for replacing faulty drives and parts is retarded.
Either you didn’t understand what was asked or you are a fucking idiot. Are you really implying that people shouldn’t be pissed because they got their console banned because they replaced parts on it?
As for any warranty issue is concerned, I don’t think people are odd for expecting something to perform past it’s warranty period. Especially something that costs a few hundred dollars. Most everything has a one year warranty but people don’t just toss shit out after the warranty expires. People don’t stop driving their cars, tvs, game systems, appliances, etc. They shouldn’t be banned for fixing shit that’s worn out or broken simply because they didn’t go back to the manufacturer.
Between your two options (buy extended warranty or don’t buy it at all,) I’ll go with the second one. You didn’t answer my question, but I don’t think I care what your opinion is anymore. Good day to you sir.
But yeah DV8 Productions is pretty much right. M$ tells you striaght up in the TOS that they can ban you just for fixing shit yourself ( or even ban you for any reason at all, if i remember corectly) Thats tottal BS. How can anyone agree to that? and buy a product and support a company that does that?? Beats me, but if you do… goodluck to you my friend, but it makes no sense to cry FOUL when they do.
Personaly I get my Retro Game on for my gaming needs too many great games from the passed i never played
This and pretty much this. It seems that a good chunk of modern thought has forgotten the one thing that is supposed to keep companies honest: boycotting their product. I refused to buy an X360 because of the shoddy hardware; similarly paying for online service was kinda whack. Regardless, some shit is going down as far as video game is concerned.
I don’t know where or when, probably with the iPod, but companies realize that they can use their product to create a secondary market they are able to monopolize. The iPhone example has been mentioned already: they sell you the product and are able to control what you can do with the product. This is what Microsoft was aiming at with the 360 well before it was released. They constantly marketed it as a multimedia system. Some of the advertising has shifted to try and make it something more attractive to our generation by serving as a machine for communal activities (the game if I recall correctly was Lips, the 360 kiosk at Best Buy would constantly blast that ad).
Because pirating can happen with the disc games, it is all that media that you get directly from the respective stores (PSN store and Live Marketplace) that is probably what they will hope to start milking in the future. Until that happens, they need to enforce the current market as best possible. If they could, Sony and Microsoft would be the exclusive content providers of games for both consoles that you could only get from the online market, by agreeing to the shitty TOS in order to use it. If you don’t agree to the ToS, you can’t use it at all (this really gets my nuts).
Until we can somehow boycott the part of the business model that has the companies become exclusive retailers of products (Apple App Store, PSN Store, X360 Live Marketplace) these things are going to keep happening. That said, Fuck apple but goddamn are iPods well designed.
Left out of here: there are advantages to Microsoft and Sony controlling the market as there is some quality control that goes into it that may not be as good as in the open market. But meh, that’s something for a different place and a different time. Mainly, fuck George Ritzer and his bullshit book.
I never bought an iphone because I already had a blackberry and I have different text messages and ringtones for different people so I can judge how important the text message or call is by the sound or how long the phone vibrates. I can put any file or picture on my phone that I want, without having the phone lock me out of things. I just don’t see the point in having an iphone, and half of the things it is capable of are locked out. I will continue to use blackberries until iphone gets with the program and stops telling me what I can and can’t do with my phone. I really hate Apple as a company for that reason, just because trying to add any USEFUL features to their products is always a huge headache that and they always lock you out of those features once someone figures out a work around.
Why are you replacing parts yourself? Seriously I don’t know much about the modding community but I’m pretty sure a BIG part of playing pirated games came from which dvd drive you were using. IF you were in the warranty you SHOULD have sent that shit microsoft. IF you were out of warranty then you are SOL. I really don’t understand why this concept is so hard for people to understand. People buy cars which have warranties for x years and suddenly the engine goes out. TOUGH FUCKING LUCK. People started getting pissed and so companies had to start making better cars/offering longer warranties. If people KNEW that the cars were a POS (i.e. like American cars back in the day) GUESS WHAT? THEY WOULDN’T KEEP FUCKING BUYING IT. If my 4 year old LCD suddenly died, You know what? I’d probably just buy a new one instead of bitching that it should last for 20 years.
This thread is like parents trying to explain to kids why life isn’t fair. AND since I’m not a parent, I’ll let you guys figure out why life isn’t fair. Oh here’s a hint though, don’t get sucked into all of the marketing gimmicks and just don’t buy products that are prone to break or have really strict TOS.
So what you’re really saying is that you have no idea how to answer anybody’s questions, or argue what you’re actually saying. I’d venture to say you don’t even understand the argument. Stop talking.
Wow so since half the people in here agree with me and I respond other peoples questions THAT makes me a troll? Seriously? I mean… seriously?
I’ve had my xbox for 3 years and if it broke I’d buy a new one. I know the risks but I enjoy playing it. If the new one broke and I had to buy 3 or 4 more, when does it become my responsibility to realize that I should probably stop buying them?
Really, it becomes your responsibility when you have to speak of a product you own in terms of completely replacing it instead of just fixing it. I can’t even begin to comprehend how somebody can justify creating a terms of service that stop you from fixing something you own. But you know, the idea that people now know this and continue supporting is just as retarded. Oh well, SRK is mad quality.
See my other post in this thread, it’s like them saying not to use a part in your car or they will not service it. Servicing a car for a car company would be like going online with their online service for a game company.
but if there were only 3 companys that made the newest cars…i wouldnt be suprised if they all agreed to do something like that. You know for your SAFTEY and all.
However wouldn’t you agree that there is a certain degree of accountability or responsibility for a company to not create a policy, product, TOS or guidelines to not make it completely unreasonable considering the market? I agree life is not fair however shouldn’t the options of being angry (but giving up), suing or raising a ruckus not be excercised more often than not when you purchase something which by common standards should at least work and function? What if you followed your own advice when buying a house, you read the fine print, you checked everything that “looked” good and you know that you were not sucked into a marketing gimmick, but 4 months after moving in your house, everything starts breaking, bending and falling apart. Would you just say “Life is not fair, there is nothing I can do about it, it was all my fault?” Or would you do what most other people would do and get angry and find a way for those accountable to acknowledge and fix the problems?
