It’s probably a malfunctioned card. Return it quick. What is the manufacturer?
try booting it without the hard drives and video card (you can listen for the post beeps and watch the LEDs to determine if the system posts or not) that will test them.
Even if those test okay, leave them out of these next steps. Test your RAM sticks one-by-one to determine if one of them is faulty.
If the RAM tests okay and since the problem is a power issue, you can then remove the CPU to determine if the motherboard will throw a beep code for no processor or if it powers itself without the CPU being inserted. Leave the RAM out for this one. If you don’t get a beep code (no beeps) or if the system still powers off, then it’s either the board or the PSU, both of which you’ve already replaced. The Power Supply might not like the wiring in your house. Did you recently re-locate or have some work done on your house?
Hopefully, you won’t even have to go that far with it. I got 10 bucks says it’s CPU.
First thing you want to do (to save you a headache) is check the cables and if that don’t work, reinstall the drivers.
Is it an all-in-one adapter? What I mean by that is does it have the wireless function on the same PCMCIA card as the network jack? Or is it all integrated on the motherboard? If it’s all on the motherboard and there is something wrong with the network chipset then it’ll likely affect both of them, meaning that you will not be able to connect either directly or wirelessly.
Do you remember what happened just before the problem started? A lot of times network problems are due to driver problems and wireless problems are due to improper configuration. Even if it was working perfectly and you didn’t change anything, go back and re-do the configuration just to make sure. Check your cables and make sure they’re all plugged in. You’d be surprised how many times someone’s family member unplugs a laptop without permission and forgets to plug it back in correctly. Make sure those cables are in good shape, too.
Here is what happened to cause the problem. I had an ethernet cable plugged in to my laptop, but one of my family member tripped on the ethernet cable causing the ethernet plug in my laptop to loosen up. And after that happened, the only way it would work was if I pulled the ethernet plug up a bit, which was no problem. But after a while it just stopped working, no matter which way I move the ethernet plug.
^ That’s physical damage to the jack. The wireless feature should work fine.
There is no need to screw with your drivers or anything from this point, unless you’re having wireless problems.
Ok thanks! But I really don’t know what to buy. I have a Linksys WRT54GL router.
I think I can get another video card. Hopefully it is just a defective card…I should just try getting my old radeon 9800 now that I think about it and see if it still does the same thing so that I know for sure its the video card. Thanks ^^
A little late, but Dios, a good router is Netgear or you can purchase a Linkys wireless router really cheap at Wal-Mart/Best Buy/Circuit City Less than $60. I have had mine for about 1 year+ and have my PS2/PC/(2)XB360s/-Wii/PS3/Laptop/PSP/DS all running off of it and never had any problems or lag with it.
They have better ones out there now, but Linkys has been a reliable brand for me.
Did you ever check your PM? Hit me up foo or whatever.
Thanks Manx! For all your help!
I’m gonna try the stuff you mentioned tomorrow after work and I’ll let you know how I get on.
Couple of extra things to mention:
So I have an .AVI file from home, that used to play fine on my fucking 5 year old laptop.
Well, my old laptop died and so I bought a new laptop with Vista. When I attempt to play the file, only the sound plays and not the video…
Simple right? Microsoft directs me to their help page where they want me to fucking pay fifteen dollars for a mother fucking codec.
I have been trying to download codec packs backdoor but nothing seems to work.
I downloaded VLC media player and Windows Classic, and neither of those got it to play either.
The shittiest part of all to me is that my five year old laptop played it no problem… Can someone tell me what to do?
I had the same problem when I upgraded. I downloaded and installe dthe Xvid codec and it solveed my problem. If that doesn’t help I don’t knwo what to do
What exact codec?
That’s the critical piece of information here, and since you haven’t provided that, people can only guess at what you’re referring to.
There’s no codec (decode-side) I’m aware that you can need to pay Microsoft to get. Third parties might charge money here, though.
So how exactly does it work Ramza? Do I try to open the file with xvideo or do I plug something somewhere or what?
And which icon do I click on before I attempt to play the file, and which program do I use to play the file?
I am attempting to play an .AVI file that used to play fine on my other WMP using XP. I tried to use Windows classic and this is the message it gave me:
“This AVI file was not prepared for sequential reading, the alternative ‘Avi Splitter’ will not let the default one handle it. The complete reinterleaving of this file is strongly recommended before burning it onto a slow media like cd-rom.”
That’s not a “codec missing, pay us $15” message.
Let’s try this again from the top:
Try to play this in Windows Media Player. Nothing else is interesting.
What happens? Do you get an Error Dialog? If so, what URL does the Web Help button take you to? If you don’t get an Error Dialog, right-click on the track in the playlist and then select Error Details, and again - what’s the URL?
Error Message: A codec is required to play this file. To determine if this codec is available to download from the Web, click Web Help.
And the help link that it sends me to, here it is:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/webhelp/default.aspx?&mpver=11.0.6000.6344&id=C00D10D1&contextid=84&originalid=C00D10D1&codec=IV50
And I tried the free downloads at Free-codecs.com, but they didn’t seem to make the video part of the file work either… .nor did ffdshow.
Alright, I just reformatted my computer and I’m getting a strange error when trying to uninstall my Elder Scrolls Oblivion game.
Whenever I try to uninstall it, I get an error that says:
First Error box:
>SetupDLL\Setup.DLL.cpp (390)
PAPP:Oblivion
PVENDOR:Bethesda Softworks (http://www.bethsoft.com)
PGUID: [what looks like an activication key, im not goona show it for safety ]
$11.0.0.28844
@Windos XP Service Pack 2 (2600) BT_OTHER 0.0
Second error box:
2nd Error Message
InstallShield Wizard
Setup has experienced an error.
Please do the following:
-Close and running programs
-Empty your tempoary folder
-Check your Internet connection (Internet-based Setups)
Then try to run setup again.
Error code: -5001
What’s wrong with my game?
Not to mention whenever I try to start oblivion I get a d3dx9.dll error message.
I tried running setup in the disc itself to install, but the install keeps freezing at the very end when it tells me the install was complete.
Also, I installed direct x 9c from the disc that came with my mother board, so it should be a working copy.
What’s wrong here and how do I fix the issue?
Where did this file come from? It’s using an outdated obsolete codec that is indeed pay-per-decoder. You REALLY want to reencode this AVI to use any other codec. That’s the Indeo Interactive 5 codec, which Intel … “stopped working on” and sold to Ligos. This is going to be non-functional in a variety of situations. Give up on this codec and move to any other codec whatsoever - reencode it on the 5 year old machine. =\
If you really really want to play this file without changing it, which is the wrong approach if you want to keep this content over time, you would want to ante up and pay Ligos that $15. Sorry - that seems to be Ligos’ business model as regards this codec. “Oh you have some legacy/old content… ? Mwuahahah.”
Ok, I got a new issue with my Elder Scrolls Oblivion game and I can’t seem to fix it.
Found out what the issue was, I just didn’t register my key to windows XP.
However, I still needed to reinstall so I just deleted the folder from my computer.
Right now whats happening is that whenever trying to install Oblivion (when running setup from the disc) it asks if I want complete uninstall the game.
When picking Yes, it says it uninstall the game when really it didn’t.
When picking No, it just closes.
I can’t seem to install the game or completely uninstall the game at all.
Anyone help? I can’t seem to find the answer on google either =/
This might sound dumb, but did you try uninstalling it via Add/Remove Programs?
Just deleting the folder of applications is generally a really bad idea. I would assume that you’re having this problem because there were certain files in the folder that you deleted which were necessary for properly uninstalling the game.
How can I tell if my USB on my PC is 1.1 or 1.2, I looked in My Computer…I can’t find it
