Computer Help Thread v4.0

Why would you want to build a new PC and keep the same old windows install? Just make backups and wipe then load a new install. It’s much easier and your system will run better.

i fucking hate geeksquad

Doesn’t everyone, Mixah?

apparently not those guys further up that work for them. haha

They pay my bills, I won’t be doing it once I get out of school :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve been planning to build a new computer for a bit now; this is some of the stuff I managed to snag off eBay:

MSI 945GM3-F Socket 775 Motherboard - $23
ATI RADEON X1300 XT 256MB PCI-E Video Card - $28
1GB DDR2 PC2 5300 667MHz - $11
512MB DDR2 PC2 5300 667MHz - $7

I’m currently trying to grab a Core 2 Duo for under $70. I have a Pentium D 815, which was my first dual core, but it was a bit of a disappointment. Anyone have any suggestions?

Another Question

I got a 2GB MP3/MP4 Player I want to fit like 700 songs…It supports WMA Files, Does WMA take less room then MP3

Depends upon the exact encoding, but generally yes, WMA is more efficient at the same bitrate. (Even WMA7 vs WMA9.x will have different results, or mp3-codec-v2 vs mp3-codec-v2.1 .) There’s ALLLLLLLLLL sorts of tests you could refer to here. If you start going with two-pass encoding of either, you’ll get better compression. However, that’s generally overkill for most audio clips. Just use 160kbps encoding or better and you should be happy. WMP has a WMA VBR setting that’s pretty nice too.

EDIT: I don’t see any good current references. Generally as development continues, results change from version to version of everything. So take my comments with a grain of salt.

Anyone recommend any good Mic headsets?
I’m starting to get sick of Logitech’s mics…the mic head doesn’t even last 6 months, and I rarely even use it.

I have 2 Western Digital Raptors 150 GBs, can anyone suggest a RAID setting for pure speed, No mirror or backup RAID just pure unadulterated SPEED!

my dvd burner keeps failing at 2% burn, is there a way to fix this or its the lens dying on me

Raid 0.

Ok, I just upgraded to Vista Ultimate. My CD/DVD Drive was working fine(I could burn/rip CDs and DVDs fine in Vista)

One day I inserted a CD and windows didn’t recgonise it in My Computer, same with a DVD. I opened device manager and beside my drive there was a yellow caution symbol.

My drive is a “Philips PBDV885P ATA Device” I have no idea what to do. Any help is greatly appreciated

Go back into the device manager and right click on it, unistall it and reinstall it.

Didn’t work, i have no idea what is wrong

You’re welcome.

Video card Issue/I think =/

Ever since i started using this Radeon x1650 series I’ve had a visual problem with it(Note. i updated all the drivers needed and I’ve never had problems with any previous video cards)

Its these 2 somewhat noticable lines that go across my screenand gets annoying now while playing with any game so far that utilizes the video card, now the only thing i can think of is either it the monitors refresh rate but thats not the problem after turning up the refresh rate and lowering it, so yeah any help is appreciated =D

Okay I have a little bit of a strange computer problem.

A few months ago, I was watching the first season of bones and all of a sudden my computer just switched itself off. I thought “no big deal, I’ll just switch it back on”. I press the power switch and everything seemed okay, but as it was booting up it switched itself off again.

To cut a long story short, after replacing the computer case, motherboard and 3 different power supplys the pc still will not switch on. The only components I haven’t changed are the hard drives, the processor/heatsink, the graphics card and the RAM.

Could a faulty processor stop power from getting to the computer? Could I have 3 broken power supplys? I’m literally out of ideas. Any help given would be much, much appreciated.

I think my network card in my laptop is broke, it doesn’t connect to the internet when I connect it to my router. What can I do and what do I need so I can access the internet? If my network card is broke, can I still connect wirelessly?
