Computer Help Thread v4.0

Thanks for the help guys. I’ll try it out.

Today was the first time that I finally ran into a .xlsx file while rocking Office 2003. If anyone else comes across this problem, you can get a converter from Microsoft.

Not too sure what to delete. Little help?

You don’t need Viewpoint running. It’s just some of the garbage that you probably got from installing AIM. Some security programs even classify it as spyware. You can remove it easily enough through the Add/Remove menu.

I’m tryin to put some songs on a flash drive. I take em to friends houses, but I can only fit so many.

Can somebody tell me a program that is good for compressing mp3’s?
All I need is a name, I can find it myself.

MP3s are already compressed.

I get this message whenever I turn on my computer…

And it always loads up a temporary profile. Something is wrong, obviously, I just don’t know what it is. Any help?

so they can’t be compressed to an even smaller file size and/or bit rate?

They can be compressed more. You can try something like 7-zip or RAR to compress them that way but they aren’t going to go down in size too much and you’ll have to decompress them before you use them. You could also reencode them at a lower quality, but then you have to live with the lower quality. If you do want to encode them smaller, may I suggest LAME.

I guess you could convert all the bitrates to something around 96kbps if you want to change them back later; though I’m not sure how much in size they go down.

ok here’s the deal, my comp a couple months back decided to get real weird with me. certain applications won’t connect to my router and some do.

like ie,ad-aware,limewire they connect to the internet

but apps like instant messenager and mozilla won’t connect online.

any suggestions?

Th8x for the replies. (I’m workin on it now)

Where I’m getting my music from gives em to you in high file sizes and bitrates.

whats ur avatar from?

i really don’t think it’s a good idea to compress mp3 files cause they are already compressed files from wave files. if you really want to, you can, i suggest you use
winrar, but i think it loses some of its quality from compression and decompression.

i suggest you just borrow the cd’s and rip 'em out.

What’s better for my laptop, hibernation or standby mode?

I know the differences between them, but which would be better? Just to for during idle times such as when I go to sleep or if I had to put it in my backpack when I’m about to go to class.

why not just shut it down? does your laptop has a long start-up time?

No, not at all, but isn’t there something bad about constantly shutting down and turning computers back on constantly? I know I read it in an article somewhere, just have to check a few magazines for it.

I need a minimalist/free proxy server to access internet over bluetooth PAN with my laptop. Any recommendations?

Is there anyone out there running linux on there pc? And if so how?, did you partiton hard drive, running off dvd or are you useing vmare?

question about ram:

How do I find which type of ram (# of pins) will fit into my computer? And how hard is it to install?
