I would still be careful what build I got. Check the download source and be sure to use an integrity checker like MD5 to ensure it hasn’t been altered. Seeing Linux software repositories get hacked and start serving out trojaned programs makes me even more paranoid than I usually am. I can easily see the benefit in hacked router firmware, so I’m certain it can/has/will happen at some point.
i use IE new version…
i just go to my favorites and hoping it aint gonna happen… well whatta ya know… same shiet…
I need a video card! I bought Call of Duty 4 and Battlefield 2 over a year ago but never got around to picking up a card to play with. I’m looking for one good enough so if Doom 4 or whatever drops soon I’ll be covered but not trying to spend $300 either. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

I’d go with a upper-mid video card for CoD4 and BF2 and save the rest for a much better card when Doom 4 drops. It’s practically a year away. Ages in PC hardware terms.
Wanderer, it sounds like you got hijacked by something that is crashing. Download all your windows updates (if you can), update your antivirus and run it and then get a program call ed HijackThis and post the log it creates when you run it.
Haha, I was joking about Doom 4. They are really making another? Still haven’t gotten around to playing Doom 3…
Any specific brand or product recommendations? I know jack about video cards and have no idea what I would wanna look for. Like…if I got an upper-middle card right now for BF2/CoD4, would I need to replace the old one with an entirely new super-upper card for newer games (Doom 4 for instance), or can you run two upper-mid card at once for the same effect?

Yep. Doom 4 is a’comin. And no, running two cards isn’t as efficient as having one really good card.
You need to look at what kind of card you’re going to need. If your system only has an AGP slot, then you’re going to need to build a new system instead of a simple upgrade.
I like ATI Radeon cards as opposed to Nvidia’s Geforce. Since you don’t actually care about Doom 4 :razzy: then for the full 300$ you could get an overclocked 4870 1GB and be fine with all the games you mentioned and then some, or you could get a 4850X2 or two 4850 1GB’s in Crossfire IF your board and power supply will support it for a little bit more money.
I’ll let the Geforce boys sugest Nvidia cards since I know nothing about them.
What resolution are you playing at? I’m going to go out on a limb and just suggest a single 4850, it’s a really good card for the price right now. If you’re looking to save some cash lookout for an 8800/9800gt on the cheap.
The Nvidia GTX 260 Core 216 is the best right now for the $$$. And that’s on the performance end. I personally like ATI but I would get that over the 4870 1GB.
If you want to spend less, but still want something decent (though not quite as powerful), get an ATI 4850 1GB.

Yeah,I forget that resolution makes a big difference now that LCD’s have taken over. I miss playing in 1600x1200. I’d buy one of those 22’ Trinitrons off Ebay if my wife wouldn’t kill me the moment I hernia-lugged it into the apartment to take up more coubic inches of space than our bed. /CRT_vs_LCD_rant
Yeah, the thing to be aware of regarding resolution is the AMOUNT of memory the graphics card has (of course, GDDR5 over GDDR3 can’t hurt either). Higher res needs more VRAM. Lower res needs less VRAM. I got the 4870 just after it came out, so I’m stuck with the standard-issue 512MB edition. But, I should be fine because my monitor’s native resolution is only 1400x1050.

I think is a cool win7 beta review
^-- that’s right, fuck you codec packs.
Note that I told some codec pack host sites that some of their codec packs were hideously buggy and they told me to fuck off because they simply wanted the ad money and didn’t care about breaking people’s systems. What great people.
I need to buy the rights to MMSwitch and some of the other buggy broken dead codecs/filters so I can legally shut those assclowns down and have them only host non-toxic packs.
It’s been a while since I’ve had to post in this thread, thankfully.
However, it would seem that my computer did something stupid on the Saturday before last with one of its accursed automatic downloads–I was gone that entire day. Now this stupid thing has Internet Explorer 7 or whatever the lastest one is.
Anyway, it seems like IE7 is forcing my Internet to get disconnected half of the time, with me having to constantly turn off and then back on my router. I know it isn’t a problem with my provider, which has just been paid off as well.
So I’m just curious if anyone else has experienced this annoyance and how to deal with–also if there’s some way to get IE6 back or whatever.
(And yes, I vaguely know that Internet Explorer in general is rather shitty, but I just want the old one back since I know that one works.)

A browser upgrade all by itself shouldn’t cause connectivity issues. One sure-fire way to test this is to install an alternative browser (just for testing purposes) such as Mozilla or Chrome and see if you get the same issues in that browser. If you do, then the browser is probably not at fault. If you do not, then there is something wrong with I.E. obviously, and you should restore to an instance before I.E.7 was installed and you should be okay.
Also, you can set auto-updates to download, but not install until you allow them to. Hope that helps.
About two weeks ago, I formatted my computer [Vista 32-bit]. When I was browsing my HDD, I noticed that it saved some of the old files under a folder called Windows.Old.
My question was if there was anything [like a virus, etc] in there, would that also affect the new install somehow?
Also, how would I go about deleting that folder, if I just didn’t want to have it anymore [it takes up 6gb by itself, or so it says]?
Thanks for any information regarding this.

Any virus would have to reinstall itself to the new install.
You’d probably need to take ownership of it and delete it.
It sounds like you did not format it but just installed over the top, which would indeed leave the remnants behind.
Ah. Thank you.
I’ll need to read up on how to format, since what I thought was formatting…wasn’t. LoL.
Downloading as I type. Will try afterwards. Thanks Manx.
Update: My thumbdrive is a piece of shit. Will try another, when I can find another.
IE6 is widely known to be the worst browser ever, so much that google has pleaded with people to stop using it and stop providing it to others. http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/40785/140/
If your router is really getting locked up, and it doesn’t happen with other browsers (Firefox, Chrome, etc), then you’ve probably got some sort of virus using your IE as a botnet or something, jamming up your traffic.
If it happens on multiple browsers, it may just be a bad router. I had this happen to me whenever I tried streaming video, it would freeze up the router.
