okay i think i have a bug or some shit on my comp.
when i try using a search engine like google or yahoo, it redirects the link to some bullshit like
http://go.google.com/?id=36331171&aid=61&said=v2test8
or
http://go.yahoo.com/?id=36340032&aid=61&said=v2test8

how do i fix this?
and what’s the best free anti-virus?

Best free anti-virus…linux. Natch.

I hear good things about avg for windows.

Is it redirecting in firefox, or IE? It sounds like some sort of spyware hijacking (though it’s using go.com’s google search function…odd).

Run spybot followed by adaware, and see if either comes up with anything.

Open up the .rar file so you see everything in it. Just select the files that you want to extract. It will only pull those.

in firefox.
i ran spybot and it’s acting weird, can’t download updates cuz it cant connect to server for some reason. i got an error window, it said something about trojan file. :shake:
bout to download adaware and avg now

edit: what’s “svchost.exe” ? is that spyware?

It’s part of windows. You can’t delete it. Though I’ve seen reports that some viruses/etc can hide themselves within it (not 100% sure though, so research it a bit more).

Try to run spybot and adaware from windows in safe mode, if there are issues. Not sure why it wouldn’t be able to connect to the server…just try it again after a while.

SVCHost.exe is the Service Host application that runs installed services. You would want a tool like Process Explorer to see what exactly any given SVCHost instance is actually running/hosting. (Same thing with rundll32.exe, which runs DLLs.)

Download a program called Hijackthis. It is specifically designed to counter hijacks.

I’ve gotten my computer to work a few times for a few minutes but then it goes back to not working. I may be wrong but it seems like it sometimes works after I clear cookies and history. But as for now it’s not working. It doesn’t do the double vision thing again. It’s too bad, I would’ve screen shot it. It was wild.

I cannot get into my emails. If I hover above the link, the status bar says “javascript” i don’t know if that helps or not. A lot of the time I just get page load errors. I can refresh a bunch of times and get a website to work, but most of the time sites are inaccessible. Its kinda just hit or miss. I don’t know whats wrong at all.

Firefox preferences didn’t work, and wouldn’t as the problems are on firefox AND internet explorer. BOOOOOOOO

Meh, may be time for a reinstall of windows. Sounds jacked up.

I’d download the ubuntu cd and run the live version. Mess around with firefox for a bit just to make sure it isn’t somehow something to do with your internet connection.

I’m sick of this garbage motherboard and decide to replace it, any suggestions? I can’t even boot without resetting CMOS anymore (that means I can’t even change any bios options including date and time even). Also, RMAing is a bitch. I don’t want to wait 4 weeks (longer if what the stories about ASUS are true) for them to send the same motherboard back to me with a sticker on it.

requirements:

  • Not ASUS
  • can handle e8400 out of the box (without flasing)
  • can handle PC-1000 4GB RAM out of the box (without flasing)

Which chipsets cause the least problems? I’m reading too much things about P35 (What I have now)

Asus still makes the best boards, I don’t give a damn

I just got a P5Q-E, and it’s by far the best board I’ve ever owned

You can potentially get a faulty board with ANY vendor though, remember that

If you absolutely must NOT have an Asus, then try a P45 Gigabyte (ugly ass boards though, yuck)

^^ What he said. I mean I have a 680i but you have to flash; no big deal really since it takes about 20 secs to do it. Lifetime warranty is also pretty nice. :bgrin: But, I think Gigabyte, Asus, and EVGA are the main ones I hear a lot on.

thanks for all the help guys. i’m pretty sure i got the fuckin trojan virus on my laptop. damn.

installed avg, tried to scan my comp and it shuts down the program
ran adaware, can’t connect to server for updates
ran spybot, can’t connect to server for updates
now i cant even access internet on it
i’ve already put all my shit on an external

i gotta wait til thurs. night for my friend, an IT guy, to come check it.

Sounds like it’s set up its own compromised HOSTS file?
Can you access regedit still? You can kind of look into it that way if you’re brutal. MSConfig is in some ways just a front-end into that.

yea…i’m a computer scrub. i have no idea what :u: means. i guess i have to wait it out.

edit: runnin AVG on desktop. how long does it normally take to finish scanning? it’s been 2 hrs and it’s not even done. the comp only has 20 gigs.

There are no microphone ports at the back. In fact, from what I can tell, I have a 5.1 sound setup at the back (which is pretty overkill, as I only have a 2.1 Altec Lansing setup).

I have a speaker port and a microphone port at the front, but as far as I can tell, they’re not plugged in.

Using Sound Recorder only gives me sounds the comp outputs - sounds, music, etc. cause of “Stereo Mix” I believe. But no mic.

Does this mean I need a sound card then if I wanna use a mic (wanna Skype)? And will a cheap sound card do?

What kind of PC is it?

The pink connector is always for headphones. If there’s not one on the back, then the one in the front may no be connected properly, or malfunctioning.

I’m not sure what you mean by this. If you are able to hear anything at all in Sound Recorder, then that means your Mic is in fact working.

Is this the program you’re using? If so, then that green line moving or any sound from your speakers means your mic is working because it was able to record input from somewhere.

Custom desktop. I’m on holiday now, so I can’t quote my specs yet. I do know I didn’t buy a sound card though, cause the shop said that my motherboard or my CPU came with it (I can’t remember which).

There are NO pink microphone ports at the back, just a setup for a 5.1 speaker set. There IS a pink microphone port at the front, and a green speaker one, and both don’t work.

When I use sound recorder, the only sounds captured are ones that my computer produces. Basically, it doesn’t pick up the mic. Let’s say I switch it on, and speak to the mic, no sound is caught. But let’s say I put on an MP3, that sound is caught. If I get an error message, the loud error message sound is caught. Not from the speakers, but from the comp directly. If I were to play a game, all the sound the game produces itself will be caught, but from the comp directly, not from the mic (if I turn off my speakers, the sounds are still caught, so it’s definitely not external).

Can you go to your AUDIO DEVICES and see if it’s enabled?

Here’s an example of mine. Currently I have it so whatever sound the comp makes gets recorded [like your current situation].

Note: I don’t know if that will solve the problem though.

Can you at least tell us what motherboard it is?

Go back to sound recorder < Edit < Audio Properties. See what devices you have for playback and recording.

I would guess it’s just not connected properly inside the case, cause I’ve never heard of that setup before. Sasmaster would be the one to petition for help, since he seems to know.

I also have never set up anything in Vista, so I really don’t know how much help I can be. I would suggest you try the jacks in the back 1 by 1 until you find the mic. There’s bound to be one.

Or you could buy a USB headphone/mic setup. Those are AWESOME because they have to work since they are basically a sound card themselves. So no matter if your internal sound card is working or not, a USB set will.
