Competitive Fighters: How many Figthing games Do you Play Regularly?

Same here, lol. Double jumping in a combo? Seemed like some expert execution back then for some reason.

3S, not my best game. Friend asked me to do it with him on GGPO but too many people in the room; too laggy. I don’t see how the regulars in there can tolerate those conditions tbh.

For what it’s worth: in general, the more games you’ve learned, the easier it is for you to learn new games. This statement is the most true in terms of attaining relative competence, ie. not being a beginner anymore, and seeing the path towards intermediate play and beyond, and really starting to understand how the game works in the competitive sense. Also though, usually the better you’ve learned a given game (reaching towards higher and higher levels of skill), the easier it will be for you to near similar heights of skill in other games (as compared to, say, a total fighting game beginner).

However, if you’re only examining your ability in one particular game though, this absolutely absolutely applies:

If all you want is to improve at one game and only that game, you’re probably better off focusing all of your time and efforts on that game specifically.

I’m going to quote pherai again from another thread because his posts are always so good.

Definitely don’t think that you should be playing multiple games just to get good/better at your primary game. Play multiple games only because you want to play multiple games.

Dedication and specialization really does pay off in terms of investing your time and effort, and completely devoting them to one game will always pay off (in that game) more than splitting up your work and allocating it in different directions. I’ve heard Justin Wong and sp00ky say that playing other games can help grant you a unique perspective and style, but even then I believe they were referring to games they don’t practice seriously anymore and games they only dabble with casually, respectively.

If you do want to play many games, also keep in mind that it’s very possible to spread yourself too thin for a given period of time, in which case you’ll hardly gain anything from your endeavours. Just make sure that you’re giving each game enough attention that you’re actually figuring stuff out (and remembering it). Even when playing many games, you’re still likely to be more efficient/effective to try and tackle at most a few at a time.

… imo.

This subject has been a popular thread topic for years.
Ugh, why am I not good at any fighting game?
What have you incorporated from playing different FGs
Multiple fighting games.
Playing more than 1 fighting game competitively?
Maintaining skill level over multiple games?
Who is considered the better player?
Is it a bad idea to enter many tournaments at once?
Multiple Games Pro
(For the record I’m pretty sure that pherai has posted in all of them. Hahaha.)

lol its good to see I’m not the only one, its also nice to see what you guys are playin. Well I think I’ve decided to narrow it down to SSF4 and BB…well BB:CS when it releases. I don’t want to get into to many games at once, because I do wanna be successful in tournaments, always wanted to ever since I started getting into playing games which was like…a long time ago. I guess I’ll have to get down to some serious practicing. Thanks Guys ^.^

My problem is ebay addiction. I keep on picking up old school / retro fighters just to add to my collection. Latest purchase was Real Bout Fatal Fury on PS1, before that it was Killer Instinct Gold on N64 and also King Of Fighters XII. The sad thing is that I just can’t get into KOFXII. It cost me £10 and was in perfect condition but I should have guessed from the cost that something was amiss…

I think I’ll try and up my Saturn Fighters collection but I keep getting out bid on X-Men : COTA in the dying seconds, Goddamn auto bid program thingies!

That’s kinda fun. I don’t really have a legit collection, but I can kind of relate. I have MvC2 for ps2, and I know I can get a decent selling price for it due to its rarity, but even though I don’t play it, I think its a cool thing to have.

SSFIV and Alpha classics from PSN 1 and 2 are the only ones that I own… except for SSB, SSBM, and SSBB.

It can be Kinda Fun, especially when you get some friends, a 6 pack and a want of nostalgia. I hear that SRK’s Mr. Wizard has mad skills at Killer Instinct.

Overall as a player I think this helps my execution as most of these games tend to have some derivative of the SRK, QCF, Charge moves, etc… within their remit BUT when it comes to the niches of these games I feel that I am costing myself matches due to the unique aspects of every game.

If I was to enter tournaments then I would need to concentrate on one game at a time until I was at a decent level and then move to the next as most of the old school SFII players don’t practice as much as they used to on this any more as they’ve peaked their skills.

Only real advantage is going to be entering the random / Mystery game tournaments… I wonder if there’s any coming up in my corner of the globe… I think I better dust off the Hungry Hippos!

Main: BB
Sub: SSF4
also: SC4, MVC2, Tekken 5 and 6, KOF12 (lol when I’m really bored), TVC

I play with my roommate, he’s better at SSF4 and I’m better at BB. we are always pushing each other cuz we wanna beat the other at his own game.

I’ve slowed it down a lot. I ran into the same problem with FPS games. I would buy everyone that came out and notice that in my favorite games (Halo and Street Fighter IV (SSFIV now)) I would always get fucked up when playing online or with friends. I’ve sold a shit ton of my collection so that I can focus on my favorite games. I’ve been able to narrow down what I play. SSFIV for my fighting game, Halo 3 for my FPS, and Gears 2 for my TPS.

All of our answers are purely incidental.
Like all things, the amount of time you are capable of committing to your fighters will ultimately determine your skill.
A number of other factors come into play when jumping into competitive play, that is if you’re going for tournaments.

Consider the following:
*What tournaments within your reach (be it local or having to journey further) are you interested in entering?
*What games are being played at those tournaments?
*Which game(s) do you intend to compete in during those tournaments?
*How comfortable are you in your skills in X game(s) when considering these options?

And I know this last one will probably stir a little unrest in the thread but:
*How much grip can you win from X game(s), provided you do well enough to place for winnings?

Personally, most of my “competitive play” is money matches (not at ALL casual) and local peon tournaments in my area and what I play the most of before tournament season is determined by considering the above factors.

Tekken, Street Fighter, and Soul Calibur (any incarnations of said) are always staples at most competitions. Then again so is shudders Smash Bros (until people remove their heads from their anuses and get over the fact that it’s NOT a legit fighter).

This season, for me anyway, I’m focusing on SSF4 and Tekken 6:BR.
There are other games in these competitions that I own and can practice on but those are the ones I feel strongest in and thus, I will devote more time to practice to stay at least keeping up with other players skill-wise.

I hope this all makes sense.

ST

MvC2
SSF4
Garou MOW
KOF 98
KOF 98 UM (mainly for the practice mode)

And a tiny bit of Tekken 6. I cannot for the life of me get properly into this game though. I dunno what it is.

edit*
I also can play smash melee at a pretty high level, but I just don’t play it anymore.

Mains
GGAC, HNK, BBCT on ps3, BBCS on arcade

Not played as much as the mains but still played when i have the oportunity
Tekken 6, KOF XII, KOF 2k2 UM, KOF 98UM, SC4, SSF4, BF

Played Casually
TRF, LB2, SFA3, SBX, FUC, CVS2, VP, MBAA, SFHDR, 3S, Project Justice, AH2

for the lulz
Super Strip Fighter 4, MKV, BBB, TVC UAS, KI 1 & 2

I’ve been going SSFIV as my main game, BBCT and soon CS, I’ll probably get into KOF12/13 soon and I dabble in Tekken 6 tournaments occasionally. Actually there is an HD Remix one coming up that i’m gonna get into as well. I personally think as far as the Street Fighter games go minus third strike if you can play ST/HD Remix decent then you can do pretty well in SSFIV because they are similar games. Not nearly the same game but just similar in style so it’s not like a rapid change from switching between them.

Honestly I would just have that one or two games that are your main games that your playing serious and then everything else is like stuff you enjoy but don’t have the time to invest to be serious.

I guess it’s a bit like choosing which characters you play in a game: main one and have as much fun as possible with the rest.

Garou : Mark of the Wolves  best game ever

Yeah, it’s a classic game, but there’s no real scene for it outside of the Pacific Rim, or Central America.
Even the mighty Third Strike has kinda languished outside of Japan and a few die-hard western arcades since it came off the old Xbox Live service (and obviously right now with the humongous SSFIV hype). Yeah, OK, you can play it on GGPO, but not everyone has a PC than can handle it, or a router than can connect to it unfortunately.
I used to play a lot more SNK stuff (Last Blade, KOF, even crazy shit like Breakers and Ninja Masters lol), but it’s so hard to get matches on these games, and when you do, it’s often some sick hardcore dude who knows it inside out, and just turns you into a real-time combo vid lol. Try playing a casual set in the XvSF GGPO room these days, seriously :frowning:

Personally, I’d like to see some of the older 3-D fighters get some kind of Live Arcade re-release, with smooth net-play and a decent lobby system. TTT, SC1, VF3, all perfectly emulated from the arcade, yeah, I’d be all over that! Total 90s flashback lol, strictly for old timers though I guess ;p
