Comics you're reading

Picked up the Titans Vol.1 The Return of Wally West TPB. Looks like it will be a fun read and that new suit for Wally is growing on me.

Also got the first two TPBs of Superman under the Rebirth line. Loving the whole family dynamic. Damien Wayne needs to fall face first on a rusty spear head and not get retconned back to life.

Waiting for my TPB of The Flash by Mark Waid Book Two to come in the mail.

Recent stuff Iā€™ve read.

Attack on Titan Anthology - Basically this was English speaking authors and artists tackling the manga Attack on Titan. This was really a mixed bag for me. Thereā€™s a forward speaking of how the author of the manga wanted Giants to become horror icons the way Zombies are all the rage right now. If thatā€™s the case then why are there comedic stories in here? Comic strip gags, really? Itā€™s noted that some stories are canon while others are not, but none of it feels canon. Then thereā€™s SJW stuff here showing other ethnicities and people of different sexual orientations living in the AoT world because everybody wants to live in an apocalyptic world right? Yeash.

The artā€™s okay I guess but nothing really stands out for me.

So yeah, I dunno. If you are super hardcore about AoT, you either already own this or donā€™t because you would prefer to just read the manga. Just me, I prefer to watch the anime because itā€™s all pretty. The manga looks fugly to me. Personal taste though.

For my money, AKA no money lol - the FCBD Marvel / Titans story is better. Better art and it is just good, stupid fun. And itā€™s FREE! Read that instead and call it a day.

Speaking of Free Comic Book Day that past on Saturday, the best story I read this year was the Buffy one. Donā€™t really care about Secret Empire, the Spectacular Spider-Man story was really bad and I donā€™t know why I need Wonder Womanā€™s origin story retold for the umpteenth time. Well hey all of it was FREE!

I tracked down the Udon Taskmaster limited series on Ebay. Crazy that thereā€™s still no TPB for it. Really dug it. Pretty cool that when Taskmaster imitated someoneā€™s powers the book would show after images of Spider-Man, Wolverine, Silver Samurai and so on. Equally interesting since Alvin Lee would eventually draw Street Fighter comics and even do some poster art for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 years later. I think I still prefer Taskmasterā€™s classic look more, but if they ever make a movie with Taskmaster and decide to go with the Udon Taskmaster look Iā€™d be cool with it.

Also finished reading Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin. Wow, so freaking good. Perfect introduction into Gundam and it goes down a lot easier than watching the original anime.

Still really loving The Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows. Issue 6 was great where they explained why this world is different. Civil War never happened. They started going into how and why Civil War was averted.

I gotta say, the Marvel Universe was never the same for me after Civil War. Well, really after One More Day but Civil War planted that seed. Ah well, at least RYV is providing a pocket universe I can enjoy for now.

Because the Wonder Woman is by Greg Rucka, fool! Thatā€™s why we need it!

I also read the entirety of The Origin last year. Thatā€™s a great series. The storytelling is more sophisticated (or at least, more palatable to modern readers?) than the old anime, but itā€™s so true to the spirit of the original, too. The production quality on those hardcovers is impeccable. Itā€™s a powerful war story masquerading as a science fiction comic about giant robots. Good on you for reading that, man.

Marvelā€™s Secret Empire is nothing short of epic right now. The tie-ins are all filler as expected so just stick to the main book and youā€™ll be fine. Nick Spencer is writing some amazing stuff on this, yā€™all should check it out.

Glad to hear its going well but after the shenanigans of Civil War II, Marvel is not getting my money for a crossover event

You were actually dumb enough to buy Civil War 2?! Thatā€™s your fault, not Marvel

Who said I bought it?

I learned to never buy a crossover event written by Bendis after Secret Invasion.

btw, DCā€™s ā€œthe buttonā€ mini-crossover between batman and flash is a bit of a letdown.
it basically teases the watchmen and thatā€™s pretty much it.

bummer.

oh yeah, that was over-hyped for itā€™s own good. plot was inventive but man, the writing was ass and the direction it went was frustrating.
reading it then i was like, ā€œWTF is happening to the story?ā€ and then the deus ex machina plot resolution was a gigantic ass-pull from marvel.
pathetic.

secret empire is THE civil war II that we didnā€™t know that we deserve.

That why I always wait for the trades rather than get individual issues for a story arc.

I almost bought the Civil War II TPB until I came across one of those rumors that, well I donā€™t know for sure if itā€™s true but it sounds believable enough. Bendis originally wanted to kill Peter Parker in the story so Miles could be the only Spider-Man in 616. So it could pretty much be like his Ultimate universe again. He was shot down by everyone, particularly Slott who doesnā€™t seem to care much about Miles. Bendis was really upset because heā€™s not used to hearing the word ā€œNoā€ no matter what he types and no matter how stupid it is. ā€œCHAOS MAGIC DOESNā€™T EXIST, THE BEYONDER IS AN INHUMAN MUTANT AND ROCKET RACCOONā€™S NEW CATCH PHRASE IS ā€œBLAM MURDERED YOU!ā€ ITā€™S FACT / BIBLE / CANON DEAL WITH IT!ā€ - So upset Besides half assed the rest of Civil War II.

Again, I donā€™t know if this is true or not but as a Peter Parker fan it sounds like justification enough to stay away from a story everyone is telling me to stay away from.

I used to like some of Bendisā€™ work. Heā€™s just working on too many books, TV shows and sometimes video games to the point that heā€™s burned out. The Guardians of The Galaxy book was one of those that caught the short end of the stick.

Iā€™m probably going to pick up all of the Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite variant covers in August so Iā€™ll try out a bunch of books then. Iā€™ll see how Secret Empire is going at that time.

*Trades for life. Even if itā€™s a series Iā€™m excited about reading Iā€™ll wait for the first trade to come out before plunging in. Speaking of which, I need to go to my local shop to pick up the first trade of Harbinger Renegade. *

bendis working on too many books is very plausible. heā€™s def guilty of phoning-in stories just to close some arcs/plot threads but with marvel touting civil war II as an ā€œeventā€ at the time was very disappointing given the closure of the story was pretty bland.

the ongoing thanos book is a good read as well, imo. the plot is compelling enough since you donā€™t get to read a lot of stories that has thanos with his back against the wall and then some lol

Did Bendis actually come out and say, in all seriousness, that he wanted Peter Parker to die in Civil War II? And that he was actually angry that Marvel denied him? Because that sounds like the sort of lie that DC would leak to the blogosphere to drum up more hate against their competitor.

Besides, Bendis already killed Peter Parker in Ultimate Spider-Man. I guess it would have been funny if he did it again. (I suppose he set a precedent by sort of killing the Scott Lang Ant-Man twice.)

Itā€™s all rumors. If itā€™s not true itā€™s more likely that it was spread by people unhappy with current Marvel. As of late Marvel sure made even more enemies with comments at the retailerā€™s summit. Then there was the X-Men Gold fiasco. Just a downward spiral lately, all on Marvelā€™s own doing. I donā€™t really think DC has to do much of anything right now other than sit back, eat popcorn and enjoy the show.

Well technically he didnā€™t kill Ultimate PP eitherā€¦although I guess later on Hickman did when he destroyed that universe.

I havenā€™t been reading as much as Iā€™d like recently. Iā€™ve still been buying but just havenā€™t had the energy to read at the end of the night. Iā€™m almost done with Secret Defenders vol. 2 (which Marvel hilariously slapped Deadpoolā€™s name on the cover of the trade to sell it) and am in the middle of Saga vol. 7 (which Iā€™m pretty much reading out of habit at this point).

The only ā€œneatā€ thing that came out of Civil War II was that (not in Bendisā€™ book mind you) if you were reading Captain America:Steve Rogers, Cap basically orchestrated the whole thing. Cap is literally the best villain Marvel has right now.

I do not know, the First Firment could give Cap a run for his money.

[details=Spoiler]He chained Eternity (The Multi Verse Eternity, not the 616 Eternity), Had Master Order and Lord Chaos killed the Living Tribunal then have Order and Chaos combine with the Inbetweener to form Logos

Anybody checking out the Lazarus Contract storyline?

Spoiler

Seeing Wally straight up retreat from Speed Force enhanced Deathstroke was the highlight of the story so far.
