Comics you're reading

This is all in the X-Men Forever vol 2 #1 taking place in Earth 161.

Jean called Rouge back to help rescue the rest of the team from Neo-sentinels, Spidey decided to follow.
That Ow is Jean calling Rogue telepathically.

Before this The X-men fought Fabian Cortez who caused Night crawler and Rogue’s powers to swap along with their mutations.
Rogue hanged onto the MS. Marvel (now Capt Marvel) Powers so all Night Crawler gets is being the worst looking normal guy with the ability not to touch anyone.

I had never actually read any Lemire prior to that so…

Animal Man was my first Lemire experience. Now with Old Man Logan, Moon Knight, I’m loving his work

Heh, so Cortez is still a thing.

And that really sucks for Night Crawler.

Kurt makes for a ugly looking Normie.

In Rogues case, she always looked good. Except for her earliest appearances prior to joining the X-Men and almost killing Carol Danvers.

Actually… he looks… okay.
Nothing special or ‘ugly.’ Just same features WITHOUT the blue and black fuzz covering things.

Who is that? Tom Grummet or somebody? To be fair, nobody in his comics looks special or ugly. They’re just… bland.

Finished reading all of the Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite variant covers this week! My haul -

https://twitter.com/Sano_From_SRK/status/892968405409689601

My favorite read of the bunch was Generations Totally Awesome Hulk / Banner Hulk. It was mostly both Hulks punching each other in the face a lot. I know these alternate covers are tacked on after the fact but this issue fit more of the theme of Marvel vs. Capcom than the rest of them lol!

The Spider-Man / Deadpool 2 part story just wrapped and I was about to draw it since Joe Kelly isn’t writing the book anymore. But since Todd Nuack is drawing the next story I’ll hang out. He’s also drawing the Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite variant cover for Rocket Raccoon’s book. Mega Man X vs. Rocket Raccoon! Man he definitely needs more Marvel work IMHO.

JUST got through talking about how much I dont’ really like Omni’s…Marvel releases Kieron Gillens Jouney Into Mystery run w Kid Loki…& instocktrades has it half price…fuck.

My top 12 Marvel runs of the past 20 years:

Annihilation by Keith Giffen, others -
Avengers/NA by Jonathan Hickman (incl Secret Wars)
Captain America by Brubaker
Daredevil by Bendis
Fantastic Four/FF by Hickman
New X-Men by Grant Morrison
Planet Hulk by Greg Pak
Punisher MAX by Garth Ennis
Runaways by Brian K Vaughn
The Ultimates 1-2 by Millar/Hitch
Ultimate Spider-man (Peter Parker) by Bendis
Uncanny X-Force by Rick Remender

Edit: Whoops…somehow forgot Fantastic Four/FF by Hickman, which I rate slightly higher than his Avengers.

All of the above is/was available in omnibus format or OHC.

Man, fuck DC comics for not keeping the Hitman paperbacks by Ennis and McCrea in print.
I got all 6 out of 7 of those books for pretty cheap but I have to shell out fucking around $80 for the last one.

Fuck my life.

Here’s me hoping that the Preacher, Usagi Yojimbo and The Boys tpbs are all still in print.
I’m trying to get all good comic books I once owned as German localization, but lost due to unfortunate events in my life.

Pretty happy I got “The Pro” for cheap though. Amazing one shot about a hooker that gets super powers and joins a super hero team.

I had no idea Pete used webbing to experiment with BDSM

Hitman is in print as far as I know. 7 volumes of one of the greatest comic runs of all time. The final volume, Closing Time, looks like it’s still available for normal price on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Hitman-Vol-Closing-Time-Numbered/dp/1401234003

Got them all for cheap except for volume 2.
That thing is expensive and most dealers who still got it left in stock are from the US and don’t deliver to Germany and even if they would with shipping I’d still pay those 80 bucks.

And yeah holy fuck that book is good. When thinking about my favorite comic books of all time it’s like with Star Wars A New Hope and The Empire Strikes back, every time I think about it, I’ll either put Preacher or Hitman on top and the other on second.

Yeah McFarlane drawing. Check Felix The Cat as the flower pot. Always hiding Felix The Cat in his Spidey book. Also little spiders in his ASM and Spider-Man covers. Grew up as a kid reading those runs so can’t be really objective about it. Those were fun times.

Last week’s MvC I variant haul!

Favorite read of the bunch, which was a surprise to me since I hate the writing on the book most of the time was Amazing Spider-Man. Mainly because -

ASM

Spoiler

Parker Industries is done and Spider-Man’s stupid glowy spider costume has been destroyed so he’s back to his classic outfit. Just in time for Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite lol!

Picked up a True Believer book. These reprint Kirby stories for only a dollar! This one featured the very first appearance of Groot in Astonishing Tales. Dude did say “I Am Groot” but also other words since he was fluent. He tried to wipe out humanity damn! Funny that the main character who tried to put a stop to Groot was named Evan. Read him using Chris Evan’s voice in my head of course. Groot’s come a long way. The book also featured Kirby’s Xenmu who was called “The Living Hulk” before Hulk was a thing. Knew of him, just never read his origin story. Orange dude, makes me wonder if that’s what Capcom’s Orange Hulk thing in Marvel vs. Capcom 1 was about lol!

Big up to Rocket’s comic having Technet in it. Completely forgot about them since their Excalibur days.

Read the Generations Jean Grey book. I guess it was okay, but young Jean Grey doesn’t actually meet the original Jean Grey, unless something changed in this after Secret Wars world or something. She met the Jean Grey that was swapped out with the Phoenix way back when. Other than that, guess it was alright. Galactus was in the story so it’s not a bad if you like Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 I suppose. You get to see Phoenix and Galactus fight it out for a bit.

The last book I read was the new Robotech. Hmm I don’t know. Mixed feelings. The artwork is atrocious. It’s not just because the characters no longer look like Mikimoto’s designs or anime-ish at all, well maybe it’s that. Still, the colors and inking make everything hard to look at it and enjoy. The characters are supposed to look more realistic, I guess like that whole weirdo bent Archie comics are on now.

The story… Well… I like Brian Wood, but I’m not sure I’m feeling it. When the SDF-1 lands on Earth the military shows up with Roy Fokker, one guy says “Oh yeah we have big plans for this alien tech. Big plans yup yup!” Um, WHAT? Shouldn’t you be freaking the hell out? A BIG ROBOT SHIP FELL OUT OF THE SKY!! You don’t know what it is! It could be Noah’s Arc! A gift from the heavens! A terrorist conspiracy! A slip in the time stream! YEASH! The Macross anime tells this part of the story by presenting it as news real footage. Naturally people combed over it for several years to figure out what this thing was. Sometimes less is more.

It’s also a modern update. Everyone has cell phones, Rick Hunter no longer has long hair, Instagram is a thing and so on. It’s as if the story is happening today. Sometimes I think updates like that are cool and sometimes they make me sad. Because Robotech has an entire timeline of events, and even minus Robotech - Macross itself has a timeline of when things happen and it’s sad to toss that stuff away instead of just touching up the things you need to touch up. I guess some people are okay with a world that took an alternate path in 1999 or whatever and some would rather it take place in this world that eventually / inevitably takes an alternate path. I think if the story actually had calendar dates and time stamped things, even if the date was 2018 I’d be okay with it.

The other thing was Roy felt really out of character here. He was coming down really hard on Rick, and I guess he had to but we didn’t get that with a mix of his loose and carefree attitude the way we usually do. He seemed to just turn into male Lisa Hayes. Since Dante in Devil May Cry 4 was based on Roy Fokker (yeah I went a good while without mentioning a Capcom game - PROGRESS) I wanted to see something like his relationship with Nero. He came down hard on Nero too at times, um, seemed like he was going to kill him lol but we still got his devil may care attitude in there.

Not even sure if I will be back for issue 2 next month. I have no hope for the artwork getting better but I want the story to improve. Guess it depends on how I feel and how my wallet feels in 30.

The Robotech comic probably won’t last too long. I’m a big Robotech fan but I’ve pretty much resigned myself to Harmony Gold’s incompetence in managing their property. I had hopes for this new comic because of Brian Wood, but the week before issue one dropped, Titan announced that Simon Furman would be stepping in as cowriter with issue five or six (I forget the specific issue). That’s not a good sign. I don’t know what the deal is with Wood, but I wonder if Titan or Harmony Gold didn’t like the direction he was going and wanted someone more amenable to overbearing editing. Granted, I’m taking this as a sign that Wood has some plots written and Furman is going to script the dialogue. I suppose it’s possible the two of them will truly collaborate.

I’m waiting on the KI comics that’s coming in sept.

Simon Furman? That’s interesting. Love his Transformers work. He’s good for SciFi but I don’t think he’ll be the best fit for the love triangle and character relationships the book needs. I think Brian Wood is better for that all on his own. Despite a few things I didn’t like in the first issue. Which I would overlook if the artwork was semi decent.

I am still at beginner level in this area however, twice a week every night i am skim through Batman the killing joke and i absolutely love it!

Okay… I just finished reading the first issue of Dark Days: Metal and I am amazed once again by the twist and turns in the story.

I love that they acknowledged The New 52 multiverse as the default multiverse but the most terrifying part was the reveal of the the Dark Multiverse.

Looking forward to how this event unfolds. Get hype!

Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite variant covers from last week! Since there were only two I tossed in two of the Street Fighter vs. Darkstalkers issue 4 covers and Monster Hunter Flash Hunter volume 9 that dropped on the same day. It’s all Capcom related so whatever lol!

From the two Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite variants the Thor issue was my favorite. Because it was mainly 2 different Thors (wait 2 different Thors? Um okay…) beating each other up. Iron Man was about how Iron Heart became the ruler of Latveria. Okay, Bendis reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally needs a vacation…

I also picked up volume 2 of The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess manga. It seems the duo behind these manga is getting a lot braver. When they showed the scene of Ganondorf getting pulled into the Twilight realm you can see the flesh peel off from his skin, definitely not the way it was depicted in the game. There’s also a random image of a knight getting chopped in half! Maybe Nintendo has loosened the purse strings more and they are letting them go all out. It’s great that this manga will last longer than 2 volumes unlike the previous Zelda works.

The first issue of The Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows written by Stegman and not Conway came out last week. Spider-Man’s dialog felt a bit off to me, but that happens a lot to me when books change authors. It was still a good read overall. Blows that Stegman didn’t draw the issue, but the fill in artist wasn’t bad or anything. Just not as good as Stegman.
