Comic stuff you thought sucked/were cool at the time that you now think are cool/suck

Competely ashamed of himself
In middle school I thought Youngblood was awesome. Shaft/Die Hard etc…

Looking at it now? Geez. WTF did I spend my money on?

And let’s not even get started on the names. I actually liked the character Die Hard. But c’mon…Die Hard?! What the hell is Badrock? Battlestone, Riptide, and of course a villian named get this: The Never Man. The NEVER MAN. And what does the Never Man look like? A large human shaped marshmallow. LMAO at their repeated attempts to be badass.

Anyone remember their catch lines? Youngblood-THIS BLOOD’S FOR YOU!!! Rob Liefield sucks.

Thought it was cool/Now it sucks
Sin City.
Used to think it was one of the best comic series ever, but by the time the movie came out, I had long since grown tired of the awful writing and repulsive character models, to the point to where the great action scenes and gratuitous shading couldn’t save it. Even Miller’s Daredevil arcs had better writing than Sin City and Ronin. Why couldn’t he just make more stuff like 300 and The Dark Knight Returns? =(

Thought it sucked/Now it’s cool
From Hell and 100 Bullets.
I always enjoyed Alan Moore’s work but could never get into From Hell.
It just felt so boring to me as a kid and I didn’t get the symbolism as easy as in V for Vendetta and Watchmen. Now I really enjoy it and it really creeps me out every time I read it.

100 Bullets as well, I used to just open it up, see the substandard artwork and put it right back on the shelf. Then years later, I saw it sitting on a Barnes shelf, and out of curiosity I picked it up and started reading it and the story just clicked with me, it was such a well written pulp series. But by that time I was already into Will Eisner and Yoshihiro Tatsumi, so I had already learned to appreciate the substance behind the aesthetic.

Badrock was his genius alternative to Bedrock else he face a lawsuit from Hanna Barbera.

Liefield went on record during an old Marvel video stating that he comes up with “cool character names” and then designs the character after it.
Also “kids love chains and shoulder pads”.
I wish it was somewhere on the net. They create Overtkill during the video.

I know about the Bedrock lawsuit. I forgot who Overtkill was though.

Spawn villain.

In the video they titled him “overkill”, but Todd changed the name later.

Oh, that Overtkill. Now I remember. I didn’t like that loser.

Image comics were eye candy back then. They had fancy pants art and great color rendering.

was hot/now not:
Pride of the X-MEN. Didn’t notice Wolverine’s deep australian accent back then

I think Image is a universal “cool then not now” thing.

Got another one for myself.

Not cool then/Fucking awesome now:
Captain America

I think this has more to do with Civil War and Bru than anything else though.

I’d say just about anything that came out of the 1990s. That’s when the big boom occurred where publishers tried every gimmick possible to sucker in people to buy their comics thinking that they’d become a collector’s item. Whether it be first appearance of something or some novelty cover/pack-in.

That and the ridiculous trend of portraying professional artists as rock stars. To which again, publishers scooped up every chump who could hold a pencil to crank out a high-selling issue #1.
