Comic Book Cover thread: your favorites, the best and the worst

The cover to Action #1 is referenced in Superman Returns as well…

anyway, “Spider Man No More” is one of my favorite covers, and I ain’t even a Marvel Fan.

I wish I had gotten the deluxe edition of “Spider Man 2” that came with the reprint of it…

Still one of my favorites.

That’s all fair enough, and I’d agree with you on all points, but I think the overriding factor is how widely recognizable the image is. If you started showing it to random people on the street, how many of them would recognize it? How many people would recognize a parody or an homage? And by sheer numbers, how many times has it been referenced in popular culture? In that sense, it’s almost certainly AC#1, by a long shot. Of course, for people who are into comics, DKR #1 and AC #1 are probably equally ingrained into the culture.

That is a damn good cover. I loved when they paid tribute to it in Spider-Man 2.

I want to post the cover of the sentinal fryin Wolvie, but forget which series it was…

It didn’t happen on the cover, it happened in the story.

it was in Uncanny though…Days of Future Past, I believe.

Was it the Days of Future Past one? It was only a 2 part issue iirc, so that should be the cover for the 2nd issue of that arc (Uncanny 142)

Sounds reasonable, let’s just agree to disagree.

…now moving onto covers! Some are bad that its funny, some unintentionally funny, some just bad, and some Liefeld:

Detective Comics #667:

I don’t know how those pouches manage stay on and he should really get those lumpy things on his torso checked, I’m pretty sure that’s not normal.

Incredible Hulk #325:
http://www.coverbrowser.com/image/hulk/325-7.jpg
lol it looks like one of those class pictures or driver’s license photos where you were startled by the flash and half-way through your facial expression.

Incredible Hulk #335:
http://www.coverbrowser.com/image/hulk/335-2.jpg
I have no idea who the guy in purple is, but he sure looks incredibly excited about the prospect of rape. Maybe he’s the ghost of sexual assault past.

Incredible Hulk #332:
http://www.coverbrowser.com/image/hulk/332-2.jpg
Gray Hulk hate hippie Hulk! Afro Hulk makes a cameo appearance.

Incredible Hulk #347:
http://www.coverbrowser.com/image/hulk/347-4.jpg
…Hulk still not happy.

Incredible Hulk #355:

wow…just …wow.

Exiles #48:

lol anatomy. This issue actually made me stop buying exiles.

**World’s Finest: **

Every single one is just too good to even describe.

X- Force v1 #9
http://www.coverbrowser.com/image/x-force/9-2.jpg
lol. I think Shatterstar’s sword is taller than he is.

Cable & Deadpool #3
http://www.coverbrowser.com/image/cable-deadpool/3-1.jpg
Just how many knives can Deadpool wield at the same time? …and don’t you think its a smart idea to get a new knife once the old one starts to look like that.

  • Reed Richards’ obsession with his work drives his wife Sue into the comforting arms of Namor only to realize his mistake just moments before Sue and Namor bump nasties
  • Tony Stark struggles with the demon in the bottle, only to come to his senses before giving into to his alcoholism
  • Spider-Man is pushed to the brink of defeat but he summons up mental images of Mary Jane and Aunt May and somehow finds the strength to overcome his mighty foe
  • Hank Pym beats his wife
  • That’s all I got for now.

I don’t think homages to Action Comics #1 count unless they clearly involve phallic symbols and a person in doggystyle position. Thus, DKR #1 is the most iconic cover.

sexy

flash has a lot of good covers

I always loved this cover because of what Hobgoblin says in the left corner!

Another image of the same cover, a bit smaller but clearer.

“IT’S GREAT! STEAL IT!”

That always cracks me up even to this day lol! I still remember seeing it at a comic shop and seeing Hobgoblin telling me to steal the comic! And you know when you are a kid you think about doing stuff like that, putting it under your shirt and walking out of the store when no one’s looking lol! Guess that’s why it’s my favorite cover, whenever I see it it takes me back to the past. :lovin:

Special ‘Normal-sized’ 250th issue! Lol, those were the good old days!

I also really like Hulk #441’s cover, it’s a spoof of the famous Pulp Fiction poster!

It sorta reminds me of the Roadrunner coming to a dead stop. All he’s missing is his tongue out and a “Meep meep” word balloon.

I was going to put that one up as a “worst cover”, actually.

I always hated that cover simply because it’s the Flash…and he’s standing there.
All that awesome coloring by Peter and like, no effort from Turner.
They did a better one later on, of Flash actually running…

Yep.

LMAO!! Cover for Exterminators #15 (Vertigo)

are those roaches fucking?

I agree…I thought funny covers were a thing of the past…

good to learn I’m wrong.

The sentimental side of me loves the cover of All-Star Superman 1. I’ve been a fan of the big guy for all of my life, and this artwork captures a side of the character that a lot of people don’t really think about.

Gotta agree there.

I love All-Star Superman.

Definitely. Quitely’s cover is an instant classic.

okay, have to post this one…one of the most famous superman covers of all time:

Yeah, Quitely rocks!

He did do one cover that really irks me though: That New X-men cover with Emma Frost and she looks like a 12 year old girl with down syndrome. Un-sexiest Emma frost ever (from New X-men 116: http://www.rackham.dk/anmeldelse/billeder/new_x-men/cover.jpg)

Speaking of sexy covers…Steranko!!! That Nick Fury #4 is such a classic now:

I love Steranko. Pretty much all of his artwork looks like it could be cover art.
