Comeback Mechanics: Curse, Tool, or Needed?

I think he means iterations.

Like, Ky was a turd until the “comeback” mechanic that was “GG Slash” kicked in.

Too bad his meter ran out by AC. :coffee:

Aroo!

SF2 had comeback mechanics. Didn’t the guy who lost the round do more damage in the next?

MvC2 had a guts system.

A few of your favorite, cherished fighters had some sort of comeback mechanic. They were just very very subtle compared to XF and Ultras.

I’m actually surprised some people can’t recognize a comeback mechanic unless it’s as extreme as Ultras and XF.

Yes, gained meter for getting beat up is to keep the match somewhat “close” is in essence a comeback mechanic (meter = more options). KoF increased the meter gained on hit/block for console.

Burst is a get out of jail free card, how is this not a comeback mechanic?

XF and Ultras are just way too much.

I wouldnt call a get out of jail free card a comeback mechanic.

Why not? It gets you out of a combo, you get another chance.

Of course, this is a good comeback mechanic so it’s easy to see why someone wouldn’t think it is one.

Mmmm…yup.

Comeback mechanics always existed and they are fun and interesting…until they are taken to the X-treme.

Unneeded… but not necessarily damaging. Depends on implementation.

I have no beef with ultras but IMO X-factor in MVC3 is the least of that game’s problems

Doesn’t matter if you like “comeback mechanics” or not yall already voted with your money and as far as capcom is concerned they’re here to stay.

There is an entirely rational response to the OP that involves the importance of requiring hard work to earn every comeback, regardless of whether it makes use of a purpose-built mechanic or not.

The Ultra Combo, which rewards the loser with the ability to reset the momentum of the round by landing a single successful blow, does not apply.

But, more appropriately: what the cunt is this cunty shit doing in General Discussion? Don’t tell me it was moved out of FGD, AKA a whiny, cunty cesspool of cuntiness where this kind of thing has a natural home.

P.S. Please don’t infract me. GD is supposed to be a haven from that kind of cuntery.

DJ in ST did more damage with throws if he lost round 1. Comeback mechanics for life.

IMO getting meter while getting HIT makes it a comeback mechanic. Why? it CAN lead to a lot more damage when the tables turn.

And Animes games suck.

Seems like the trend of popular new-gen FGs is to have some type come back mechanic. This is obviously pretty difficult to define so I just think of it as a system that gives shittier players a chance to be better than they really are. It doesn’t necessarily have to be XF, rage or ultras, it can simply be ANY system that helps shittier players win. Under this umbrella of vagueness you could probably include option select which pretty much allows the player to make the best choice without having to actually guess. And of course all of this is done intentionally with the idea that developers wants shittier players to be better than they actually are. If the game is too difficult to get into, takes too much practice then the FG will be dropped by the casuals and you’ll be left with a small community of hardcores with the same people winning all the tournaments consistently - this is exactly what developers want to avoid. It’s disheartening for your favorite game to undergo revisions that basically discard all your efforts at getting pro at a particular game. At the same time I know in my heart that if they didn’t dumb down games it would eventually be dropped by the larger community and eventually the FG scene would fades away into obscurity. I used to get all salty when I’d lose a match to player that I knew was far inferior to me but now I come to accept it as the way things will be.

Dude, you missed some basic yet often overlooked stuff. X-Factor gets stronger as you lose team mates, kinda like how super meter is given by getting beaten up. Is X-Factor NOT a comeback mechanic now?

My initial point is that not all comeback mechanics are crazy extreme like X-Factor, but that doesn’t mean things that are more subtle, like meter gain, meter regen, guts, damage increase, etc. AREN’T comeback mechanics. They all facilitate a comeback, albeit in small, sometimes barely noticeable ways. They are still things given to someone for taking damage rather than dealing it, ergo, they are comeback mechanics.

Like some people have since said, most of my and I’m sure YOUR (anyone) favourite games have some form of comeback mechanics in them, it’s just that some of the recent fighting games (SF, MVC3, T6, etc.) have taken things to an extreme.

If you could be half man half sausage, which half would be which?
