Columbia,SC: Going in Strong

A rotation something like this?

Month 1) USC event
Month 2) G-Vegas at Quantum
Month 3) Ranbat/Gathering/Local Tourney that rotates between upstate and Columbia?

Or, perhaps, we should get Justin and Josh from the coast involved in this and go to something like this:

Month 1) USC/Columbia event
Month 2) G-Vegas/Upstate event
Month 3) Charleston/Myrtle Low Country Event

I’d be extremely pleased if all three regions of SC would have regular events which are pre-planned so we can advertize year-round and all three regions can grow.

In scenarios such as the ones above, Columbia wouldn’t need a “venue” per-say, but could perhaps do some sort of rotating gatherings at various people’s houses to keep players playing between gigs.

i like that idea, well usc is Nov, Ill put one dec or Jan.

nice! If you could do December that would be awesome if it can be done. Then we can work on planning something for January, perhaps at Charleston?

I’ve contacted Josh and Justin to get their input on this topic. At first I was trying to work something out for Columbia, kinda working from the ground up. I think you guys are on to a better method, kind of working from the top down, creating some kind of plan for laying out a routine for the larger events and then working on local stuff around that.

Also keep in mind we need to come up with a 5 on 5 team for Final Round. Sure it’s 5 months away, but 5 months goes by fast. We can talk about that later, but I wanted to keep it on peep’s minds. I’m going to Final Round and want to see South Carolina shock people there. We have all the talent here to do that!

I’ve been watching and reading the talk about the tournaments. I think it would be awesome if everyone in Columbia who wants to plan a tournament meets up to discuss plans in person. We could meet up to have breakfast, lunch, or dinner somewhere. I would love to help host more tournaments in the future and I would love to do this with my fellow SC comrades.

I would be more than happy to host tournaments and provide housing for you guys. I have no problem securing a venue here either.

Also, if you are interested in getting a 5on5 Tekken6 team together for SC, please inform Larry (ShinBlanka). Currently they have 1 spot for a SC/NC team, and I know SC has enough players to make their own team. NC probably does too, it’s just a matter of them showing up at FR.

Figured I’d throw my 2 cents in.

First, I agree with Avatar2 that a ranbat style or monthly tournament for Cola players is a good idea and I think that it would help to build a newly re-established region. Greenville has had similar things for some time now and Charleston also has its own ranbat system so I see no reason why people should complain about Cola joining in that tradition.

Second, the idea of alternating venues for mid to large size tourneys is pretty interesting but there should be some precautions. For instance, if all regions agree to this setup I think it is important that all tourneys in this circuit agree to use tournament standard rules and systems. This is particularly important to pad players since they could potentially end up only being able to play one out of three mid-sized tourneys which is important with final round 5 months away. Before others chime in and say the pad players should just learn stick(Filldoh and Tak I’m lookin at you,) let me say that there is no reason pad players should be penalized for their controller choice. PS3 is the tournament legal system for most fighters out right now so a PS3 pad player should suffer extra grief because some people prefer another system. The only time problems arise for pad players are when non-tournament standard systems are used.

The point above is important because Greenville usually run several games on 360 and that takes several of the Cola and non-Cola pad players out of the running automatically. So before agreeing to this format a formal agreement should be met dealing with this issue.

Now ranting aside, I think it would be a good idea to do both if possible. Having a ranbat for locals and alternating mid-sized tourneys for the whole region/state seems like a great idea. I think everyone would benefit.

p.s. if everyone is using stick anyway why not use ps3s as everyone would be able to play;using xbox necessarily excludes people.

p.s.s final round typically goes with ps3 as the standard so getting used to it now would be in everyone’s best interests.

I suppose that was more like 5 cents.

I walk away from srk and dr.hat posted. crazy! Pat they sell ps2 to xbox 360 convertors for $23.

Can I interject into the conversation. I feel that Columbia deserves a monthly or bi-monthly tournament that is local. To agree with Avatar, that it would help expand our player base and help use grow as community. Columbia for the most part travels all the damn time to tourneys in Upstate, Myrtle Beach, and even Charleston. It would be nice to play in your home city every now and then.

btw Pat nobody likes 360 tourneys. Every one I with to to characters disappear or controller ports are wrong,so that you have to restart the system. It really slows down tourneys more than the controller issue. PS3 ftw

ps Im going to Ohio. SO HYPE.

lGakmanl, I think that most of us can meet up sometime before or after Fall Brawl, because most of us are going to be there. I don’t know if Josh (Icege) is going to go or not, but I can discuss things with him beforehand, get his ideas and opinions, and bring them with me.

Dr. Hat, you made an excellent point. If we are to put together a tourney “strategy” for the state, I think standardizing tourney rules is an excellent thing to have on the agenda. I’ve witnessed that some of the best players are pad players.

For instance, Battle Walrus out of Augusta, who is a beast, is a pad player. He beasted at the Augusta Super Tourney with a 360 pad. WTF!

I would still love to do a monthly ranbat here though, because I do feel it would be great for Columbia, but I think it’s great that we’re talking about coordination of events statewide first, because that also is vital to the growth of the scene.

AwardTour, I’m jealous as hell man. Justin asked me the other day about it and I got hype for a while about going but then I realized it’s a multi-day event that would require a hotel stay, etc, and I just don’t think my wife would go for it right now. It’s damned awesome to know that SC will be represented though. I think I might do a small blurb about it on the blog because it will show blog readers that SC players not only travel, but they are willing to put in some serious road time to go to a tourney if it’s high profile enough.

I have said this before I dont care what system we have it on. The reason we do it on 360 is because we have alot of 360’s and not many ps3’s.
I have tried to depend on people to bring equipment but that slows down tournaments more than anything.
In fact i asked everyone including the Colombia people that came to the last Gvegas tournament what system we should have it on and no one cared.
The Upstate people didnt care
the Cola people didnt care
and the Agusta people didnt care, so why should I.

I counted the votes of the people that came and no one else, Because the age old rule applies on tournament
IF YOU DONT SHOW YOUR VOTE DOES NOT MATTER.

Sorry to be harsh on this but it is simple, most people here play on 360 but you are just saying if they play on stick just use a PS3 stick, well you would need to mod your stick or pay for a ps3 one. This is just as unfair to the 360 people.

I have a simple solution there is a $20 adapter for ps2 to 360 in the trading outlet buy it for the 360 tournaments and you are good.

and as far as the Myth about 360 tournament taking longer we have had more trouble when we ran PS3 tourney’s I mean the last GVegas with 30+ people for SF4 took 1.5 hours. It can run just as fast as PS3 if properly planned.

ATTENTION, On the topic of PS3 vs 360 pads…anyone and everyone needs to get a controller converter…I’m about to buy one so I can use my 360 pad for the PS3 console

and vise-versa for the PS3 pad for 360 consoles – there is one for that as well

THAT WAY, it does not matter what console a game is on because regardless they play the same…and **with the converter any pad works for any console ** [PS3/360 only of course]

With a controller converter in place any console can be brought for tournaments…it won’t matter how many 360’s or PS3’s are there the controller you own can be used on any of the two consoles – which then ends all disputed whether a 360 is brought or a PS3

Check the two links below: Highly Suggested

XCM Cross Fire {PS3 pad for 360 consloe}

XCM Cross Battle Plus {360 pad for PS3 console}

Youtube proof: Console Dispute = Over

Why not have another chance to play in competition again – you won’t get better if you don’t, so in the the end you would have a community with of out of shape players due to lack of tournaments to go to so they can gain tournament experience

There is a BIG difference between friendly shape and tournament shape – thats all…but if you all feel the need to still do quarterly…hey do what you guys see fit…the reason places like Cali and NY are so successful is BECAUSE there are so many places to play and often enough – so people don’t feel like thay can NEVER compete – trust me…I lived in NY most of my life – I enjoyed knowing I could just about all ways play…and not complain when I missed an event due to life in the way

If I’m correct, everyone here is trying to fit gaming around life not the other way around…so more events give people more chances to play [IMO]

If you all really want to grow…eventually [not saying now] you will have to stretch out past little old Columbia…there a cities much bigger [in other states] that try and stretch past more than just their city – I believe there a plenty of players around all of SC that can play apart of the SC tourney scene in general – it works better if we all come together

argh, sorry for the dub post

I walk away from srk and dr.hat posted. crazy! Pat they sell ps2 to xbox 360 convertors for $23.

From what I understand those converters lag. I might be wrong but if u don’t want to waste 23 dollers don’t do it. I’m lookin out for the pad players.

lGakmanl in the post i link there is a whole article about how they tested that particular converter for lag.

0megaZer0 how much are those converters? Cuz if those are the ones that are 90 dollars then those are the one that lGakmanl was talking about that lag.

Filldoh Columbia has definelty stated there opinion about using PS3 over 360. I remember the last G-vegas that was at LFG, when someone turn off the 360 and all the characters disappear and then you had to run a 50 or 60 people sf4 tourney on 3 setup that took like 5-6 hours. I personally offer many times that I would bring my PS3 and could get the more other Columbia players if you switch your tourney to PS3. Im just saying.

– So far I have heard of no problems with the converters…there is a fake one going around for the PS3 converter but XCM said themselves that they have labeled the right ones and show you the version that is fake if you go to their site

I’ll keep research tabs on the converter problems [if there are any] and let you guys know

EDIT: Lag Test = W00T - Good 2 Go

XCM built these things for tournaments…so to end the issue of what console to bring to tournament events – I doubt they would release an item purposely built for tourneys with lag

If you misunderstand the video ask me and I’ll explain it – I actually understood what he did to prove the no lag on the converter lol

how much do they cost?

I completely agree about more is better for tourneys/gatherings. However, u may want to rethink your last paragraph. Columbia players have been doing nothing but branching out to other cities for tourneys for quite a while now. We of all people know the importance of such things. As a matter of fact, 3 of our players will be at SB4 this weekend in OH! I know your new to our community so u probably didn’t know these things, but I wanted to vouch for those of us that are always traveling out if town for tourneys. I want to discuss our options in fuller detail, but I’ll have to do so later, bc posting from my iPhone is hurting my hands. :frowning:

Yeah pretty much. The core of the cola players travel. I know I do, I know alot of others here do. And yes, there are people making the trek to seasons beatings. I wish I could go.

Yea the 360 converters here http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=174859 dont lag. They have been reviewed several times and are just fine.

on the issue you are talking about we had three setups for 360 and some ASSHOLE decided after he lost to delete the save on one of them. This was not a 360 issue this could have happened with a ps3 as well as people where at fault. For the last Gvegas tournament we prepared for the issue by having 8 total setups ready to go for SF4 just in case someone deleted a save. The thing is if we had done it on PS3 and someone deleted it would could not have done anything as you cant transfer harddrives. the first sf4 tourament was slow due to lack of setups and planning on my part not due to the 360, the second one had 30 people and was done in 1.5 hours. That is pretty damn fast, and if people would have showed up on time it would have been faster(I will fix that next time as if you are late and dont call you dont join and if you are late when i need you and i cant delay anymore, you are getting an automatic first round loss. People like you Awardtour and myself that show up on time dont deserve to have their time wasted because some people are slack.)

As far as people bringing ps3’s that is fine but that can also hold up a tournament depending on if they are late or if they dont show(which has happened after they commited to bring shit, YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE) doing them at quantium with the equipment there means i can start on time and dont have to depend on people bring their shit.

Saving spot for mega post later on.

Glad to see Pat posted. I’m with you that there’s nothing wrong with playing pad and you shouldn’t be penalized, however if the option isn’t there it simply makes more sense to learn stick or not complain. Yea upstate used xbox 360 and there was a lot of gripe over it, we didn’t have an option. There were less than 5 people out of 20-30 who needed ps3 pads to play, and we tried to find ps3’s but it just wasn’t in the cards. This is a good point to bring up that should be resolved.
