Columbia, MO 2008: We Post More Than We Play

naww its all about them Arcana Hearts  its the future of gaming…

I play 3rd strike give me a call 823-4213

Anybody home? Thought I’d say hi. I’m Will; if you’re ever in Brady Commons, you might see me playing Soul Calibur II on occasion.

It’s good to see an actual community in this town! I was afraid that the dire arcade situation would be the end of things; nice to see folks keeping things going. I’d love to get in on any competition, although it’s been a while and I don’t know if I can hang like I used to. Damn old age.

Soul Calibur and Tekken are my usual games, with a dash of VF here and there. My 2D skills have definitely gone downhill since my college days, but I used to play some respectable 3rd Strike and early Guilty Gear. I wouldn’t mind picking them up again if the opportunity presented itself.

I’ve got my own Soul Calibur II cabinet, so if there’s interest, maybe we can set something up on the weekends. You can pay in beer instead of tokens. Don’t hesitate to hit me up on Live, PSN, or Messenger, either.

I normally play Guilty and some Super Turbo, but I’d throw down on some Tekken and drunk SCII (especially if I’m paying in beer). If you want to play on weekends post up, I’m normally free if I’m not in St. Louis.

PS, you planning on getting SC4?

I’ll definitely be getting SC4. I didn’t play much of 3, but I’m liking what I see of 4 so far. Online play doesn’t hurt, either.

I’ll be in touch.

Gentlemen I believe you have stumbled on the key to reviving the arcade scene. Cabs on freeplay, with a two drink minimum cover. We’ll be rich, lets make it happen.

It’s. So. Beautiful. :woot:

Think I’ll mod my cab to take bottlecaps instead of quarters. I bet I could hack it…

Paul, I’m seriously on getting a PS3 and was wondering… what ver. do you have? It seems the 20gb/60gb were the earlier ver., but are now DCed. The 40/80 are the models available now. I’m leaning towards the 40 since putting in a different HDD “ain’t no thang.” Unless there is something that the 80 has internally (like a better laser pick-up, or basically a longer life) I don’t see any reason not to get the 40. 2 USBs are fine, and I don’t need a mem card reader.

Hey Salamande, I don’t play 3d games really, except a little tekken tag/DR. I have a Super-gun(home made cabinet w/ TV) for playing 3rd strike and ST. I also dabble in Guilty gear. How long have u been in columbia?

I guess now’s as good a time as any to get back into the 2D thing, especially with Blazblue and KOF XIII on the way.

But look. I’ve been damaged, people. Back around 2001-2002 I lived in Kyoto, Japan. I think I still have PTSD from getting my ass kicked one afternoon by a gaggle of honest-to-God, uniformed schoolgirls in Guilty Gear (they took turns on me, it was like I was pulling a goddamn train), so I’ve got an (extremely flimsy) excuse for sucking at 2D games. Although the worst thrashing I ever got was from this brilliant 10-year-old Akira player in VF4…I’m talking rising knees and SPoDs all day, damnedest thing I ever saw. That stereotype about Japanese players is based on truth, for serious.

I’ve lived in Columbia on and off since 1995, when I entered university. So a good while. I’ve been here and there, doing different things, but I always seem to gravitate back to this town. Just familiarity, I guess. The nice thing is, now that I’m in grad school, I’ve got time to settle down and chill out a bit. In years past I had a crew of good friends that I played with all the time, but getting older’s a bitch. People move away, have families, grow apart…just about everyone I used to run with has either left Columbia or just lost interest. I figured it might be nice to spread the feelers a bit and see if I can find a few like-minded individuals out there.

did u play at gunther’s any back in '95?

A little bit, yeah. Though I think I was mostly playing in Brady then. I was still new to the area.

I got the original 60gb version because I wanted the built-in backwards compatibility and all the bells and whistles like wireless internet, extra media slots, etc. I would honestly have to check and look up the differences on the 80 and 40 to know which is the better value, but I would think you’d probably be fine with the 40. Oh what a crazy world we live in, when Josh actually buys a new system. Maybe that means I have to buy a real television :lovin: :woot:

I use to play on that cab a lot, if you ever seen a small little Asian kid playing Maxi, that was probably was me, but I usually played DDR a lot at Brady Commons, and it would sound like a lot of fun playing on cab, but I think my parents would kill me if I had any beer on me. :wasted:

And I need someone to teach me GG:AC, I’ve had the game sitting by my PS2, and I haven’t ever touched it.

nice

I’ve been studying the differences hardcore. The 60 gb has the best ps2 backward compat. because it has the actual ps2 hardware inside(99% compat.). the new 40 and 80 use ps2 emulation(85% compat.) I don’t really give a shit about ps2 compat cause i can just use my ps2 for my 2 games(ha HA!). I’m actually researching 50" plasma TVs too(samsung and panasonic). For me I’m just looking forward to super stardust HD, HD remix, and SF4.

Would you say 60bg is more than enough, or do u plan to upgrade? How many games, saves, etc. did u squeeze in there?

BTW, if u are seriously considering getting a new TV i would stay away from LCD unless u get 120hz and the tv has a “game” mode. LCD is just a “slower” technology. Plasma is compared to CRT all the time. Unfortunately it isn’t a CRT:sad:

Fuzzy, I noticed you played Vampire Savior. Now, that is one game that I can say that I’m still good at. People used to fear my Jedah and B.B. Hood.

Really? Sweet.
I’m usually on GGPO past 3 P.M all day, so if you want to play a little on GGPO, that would be cool, since I don’t think that anyone has it on a console.

I have Vampire Darkstalkers Collection on JPS2 if thats what your talkin bout…

Thanks for the info, I need to figure the TV situation out soon. As for the PS3, I hope I don’t have to upgrade; for now I don’t expect to unless some crazy shit like 10gb installs happens.

I actually do have it on console (Jap Ps2), and so did Andrew. I would simply have to look up which dipswitch setting is American arcade perfect. If people want to play it sometime I’d be down, but I suck hard at that game.

That’s sweet, I’d play, but if anyone doesn’t know how to play, stop by the Vampire Savior room on GGPO, and some of the people there can show you how to play.
