color combat

i love how angel turned out.
and of course, the bobsy colors are fucking awesome

Hey, let’s not just post lines guys. The point of the thread is to compare and learn from each other’s colors.

Here’s Kando’s…Kando. Trying to go for speed with this one. Took about 30 min but I think I could have done it faster if I didn’t have to do the flats. I just use the gradient tools to get the general feel. I want to take it further with shadows and highlights, but I like the way it looks now.

I’m order to promote more activities, here’s the psd file with the lines and flats. Just set your magicwand’s tolerance to zero and uncheck all the options to select and fill in your colors. I leave the flats on one layer so I can go back and select an area again if i need to.

I think it’ll be a good idea to post flats from now on too, to make it easier and faster. You can probably just upload the flats as an image on it’s own if you don’t change the dimension. That way people can just grab that and stick it under the lines layer.

here’s a tut for flatting

EDIT: I just read some of the tut on that site and back in the day when computers were still slow. They saved the lines and the colors in two files. The colors would be worked on in low res and after it’s done, it would be up-res’ed and merged with the hi res lines file. Pretty interesting way to conserve memory while you work. But this is like when Photoshop 3 first came out though haha. Now adays I don’t think we need to go this route.

i’m pretty new at this whole coloring thing. i got a tablet recently and fucking with it 24/7. not that kind of fucking, but…yeah

colors done w/ mouse. linework done on tablet.

i was wondering what type of techniques you guys use to color. my colored images are turning out pretty damn flat in terms of shading. any suggestions would be awesome

DF - What size is the psd? I’ve seen gradients approached but way of flats > multiplied circle gradient > white overlay cel shade. Is that what you did?

Tokoyama - Great job so far, man. How’d you paint them lines like that, just ordinary pen tool? Looks great for starting up with a new tab, man. What kind you got?

This was for a tutorial I was working on. The forearm’s junky as hell.

looking good kando. The forearm is just a cylinder so it doesn’t need much rendering. Lighting’s a little ambiguous though. I just used the gradiant tool with foreground to transparent. Nothing fancy. I’ve seen people do screen filter and whatever too but that’s too uncontrollable.

Tokoyama, just push your darks more. Right now if i squint all the darks just blend into the midtone. If you learn to see your shapes in their 3d forms, and study values, colors, and edges, you’ll be good to go.

i use a wacom graphire 3

yeah, i guess it just takes time. i think i get lazy with the shading when it comes to coloring

where do i go to check out your tutorial, kandoken?

DF - Thanks man. That highlight thing was a screen layer I just slapped on top for no apparent reason. I see what you mean about forearms being cylinders. Never saw it like that before, awesome!

Tokoyama - Funny you should ask that. I JUST put it up not too long ago. It’s pretty crap, I realized alot of the stuff I wanted to type up was more spread out than I thought. I’ll cover more aspects later. This’s more of the basics(or basically what MC said in previous threads just slightly different/worse LOL). It’s on my MySpace blog, here’s the link:

anyone still up for coloring?

Reminds me of Sakura. Good job sir and to everyone else. Keep it up!

Can I upload that to my web page so that maybe I can use the software on my web site to color it. Also there’s a chance someone else who uses my web page might color it (unless you’d request otherwise).

Actually if anyone wants to you can upload to it (you have to log in to post images). Set a picture to “public” and it will let other members continue it.

(If it’s not already, it might help if someone could first convert it so the foreground is say just 2 colors, (black (ink) and grey (pencil)), and the rest was transparent or the same shade of white. Or at least set the background to transparent. It’s not necessary, but this is just because some people like to color on a layer underneith the line drawing.)

The hadouken kando… junk.
