Cody Beginner's Guide

depends on the character you face. some have really good anti airs which hit both side, some do not.

f.mp on block leaves you at +1 on block. so c.lp is a 3 frame gap. CH means counterhit. (gives you +frames on your hit and does +25%dmg and stun aswell for that hit). for instance is it possible to combo a c.hp after a CH s.hp. or to combo c.hp into ex rocks into ultra 2. in general, cody has some major profit of any move he lands. however, his problem is that his pressure can be easily interupted by any srk or other 3 frame move etc. it’s up to you to adapt your opponents behaviour and find a balance between frame traps and save play or tricky mixup.

rocks are situational. they can be as good as they can be bad. in fact, the have the lowest recovery of ALL projectiles in the game, but the slowest start up. lp rock beeing the fastest with a short reach can be a good way to pressure your opponent out of his proximity reach. if he trys to poke you and get hit, you can combo into anything within your reach (c.hp, u2, mk ruffian etc). also, they do decent stun. due to the arc and the possibility to fake / hold it, it’s also not as bad to hit airborne opponents. you can even combo afterwards. it’s just not your everyday hadoken projectile. in it’s own way, it’s special.

Ultra 2… The initial dust shows up as a green hitbox… that means projectile right?

If it’s a projectile then why can Fei Long Counter Ultra II against it?
Furthermore, Fei Long’s Counter WONT WORK on Ryu’s Hado…

Ryu can spin kick Through hados… but can’t spin kick though Cody’s Ultra Dust…

Seems like it’s a physical attack.

it is a projectile, hence the abilitiy to negate other fireballs.
AFAIK fei can only counter it if you right in his face. try it with a little distance. same goes with gouken’s counter. he can use it against fireballs, but will only hit the opponent up close.
ryu can’t spin trough it because the dust reaches way higher then any projectile (maybe but high tiger shot). if you activate the ultra while the opponent is standing in front of you, he CAN’T avoid the dust by normal jumping. you’ll still hit him, making this ultra a perfect tool for a chip win. [doesn’t work on max range tho].

I’ve been toying with a lot of characters before AE hits (was bored at the game) and recently picked Cody up, I like his playstyle so much I might even main him in AE. Couple questions that I could not find the answer online and hopefully will spare me training time:

 1. Holding up+forward after a back throw is a safe jump, correct? From my small testing, it’s safe vs 5 frame reversals and unsafe vs 4 and below (Guile’s Flash Kick hits). Is this correct? I ask because some characters have different wake up timing…

 2. How exactly is the Zonk (both normal and EX) in regards to invincibility? The SRK wiki lacks this info. When option selecting with it after a safe jump, I had mixed results against Fei Long’s Flame Kick. Sometimes it would be perfect and not come out if he reversals it, but other times it would and get stuffed. CW also could either pass me completely or hit me perfectly.

 3. Why do people (even top level Codys) end their combos with MK Ruffian? I can understand doing it against Gief, T. Hawk, etc, but they do it in every matchup. Also, I understand something like cr.lp, cr.lp, cr.lp, cr.lk xx CU can do more damage than doing the same combo with c.mp instead, due to pushback, but why not just cut one cr.lp (so it’s cr.lp, cr.lp, cr.mp xx CU) for more damage?

 4. Is the knife advisable in any matchup?

 5. What’s the most reliable AA vs gief? b.mp seems to get stuffed a lot by his jumping MK.

 6. Any shenanigan followup after a forward throw? Safe jump setup or the likes.

 7. Who gets hit by HK Ruffian, MK Ruffian? I only know of Ryu =(.

Thanks a lot if someone takes the time to answer these.

 1. 3 framers can infact punish it, so that’s correct.

 2. normal Zonk has head invul for a brief period, though I’m not sure on the exact amount. EX I think is full invincibility from frame 1 to 16. I’m guessing you’re just mistiming it for the flame kick, and CW is beating you w/ its invul or sailing over you due to hitbox depending on where you are.

 3. Ending combos with MK Ruffian is either to get offensive characters off you since Cody’s reversal game is pretty bad, but when you’re on the offensive it’s typically for wall carrying.

 4. Knife can be used in any situation where you want some better poking. st. mp and cr. lp with knife for example are some good pokes.

 5. If Gief is jumping at a distance where b.mp is being stuffed, then you’re probably too far. In those cases st. hk with beat or trade most of the time if your reactions are decent enough. HK Ruffian always works if you’re already predicting a jump.

 6. Not that I know of. I typically try to jump above the guy’s head off a forward throw for an ambiguous cross up or just f. HK into a meaty attack on characters with weaker reversals

 7. HK Ruffian > MK Ruffian should always work off a high AA HK Ruffian hit or trade.

edit: mordio beat me
my answers anyway:

 1. mostly, but adon wakes up too fast
 2. upper body only & not throw invincible
 3. most likely to push the opponent to the corner. & the less jabs&shorts, the better. people use them to hit confirm tho.
 4. everymatchup
 5. s.hk & hkruffian… maybe far s.hp?
 6. buttslam: walk forward a bit, ambiguous crossup j.roundhouse
 7. dunno… as an antiair or from combo?

On 7 I meant in corner combos. Like s.hp, cr.mp xx HK Ruffian, MK Ruffian.

Hm, I’ll definetly try HK Ruffian AA more (b.mp is so godlike I got lazy) and use the knife…I haven’t been toying with it much because Cody’s normals are so good and frametrapping is one of the most fun aspects of his gameplay to me.

Thanks again for the replies.

Although I’m not very efficient with Excalibur, from what I’ve heard it’s really useful in the Dudley matchup.

Can anyone explain me why this works?

far.lp is +6 while sweep is 7 frames startup according to wiki.

me & packz were discussing this combo+OS when i was still frequenting these boards… tho i dont think i ever got the sweep to connect lol
the reason it works is because the combo & feis reeling animation creates the proper spacing/timing for the jab to hit meaty.
kinda like:meaty c.jab > u2

Yeah, putting a little thought afterwards I think what happens is that the s.lp hits on it’s second active frame, giving you an extra +1 afterwards. But this also means that the link from cr.hp into s.lp becomes a 1 frame link, when it would be 2 frames…and since you can’t plink that I don’t think it’s reliable =(. I also believe you have to hit the cr.hp really deep. It would work if I was extremely close to the opponent or after a jumpin, but not while walking towards him or any other range like punishing a flame kick for instance (hope this makes sense lol).

On a side note, I just found out that OS EX Criminal Upper beats everything Fei does on wakeup…probably well know around these parts, but since I mainly compete with a strong Fei you can understand the amount of effort I’m putting in this matchup lol.

Man I had no clue Cody was this cool. If I new he had all these tools from the beggining I’d have picked him up long ago.

OS EX CU with what? cl.lk?

Hm, my bad. After safe jumps, so mostly back throw and lk ruffian. If you do it on the ground, Chicken wing will tag you and it won’t reach to punish backdashes unless in the corner.

So, from what I can tell, works when option selecting after a jump-in. I didn’t get it to work on the ground, but it could just be poor timing from my part.

dunno if you checked it out or not… but aside from the one we were just discussing, packz has other vs fei tech upped on his channel

Wow that channel is godlike.

Also I just noticed momochi does f.mp, cl.mp, cr.hp xx CU for punish combos…maybe I should stop being lazy and drop the s.hp, cr.mp, heh.

Packz’s Cody is really sick: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvlqtrbUUNk&feature=related

I particularly love the cr.jab OS U2 setup he has, can anyone confirm how he inputs this? Like, is he just doing QCB x 2 really, really fast as he jabs, or is there some trick he’s using, like doing one of the QCBs beforehand or something? Seems like something I’ll have to practice.

Also, he likes to do cr.jab, st.LK as meaty pressure (example: 5:48 in the above vid). What is he OSing in there?

Yo infil, Packz here, I don’t really come on the Cody forums on SRK so if you wanna know anything it’s easier to contact me on www.neoempire.com in the Cody section.

Anyway, the c.LP OS U2 is not that difficult to do, you just input QCB x2 while doing the c.LP. So, in order, it’ll be c.LP -> QCB x2 + PPP. If the opponent blocks the c.LP you’ll get a true blockstring into st.LP and if they backdash or do an invincible move that will avoid the c.LP U2 will come out.

Another thing, make sure you guys frequently check my YouTube channel as I’ll be updating it for AE and tactics I’ve found against Yun and Yang. I’ll also be updating the blog very soon as well with more frequent posts and matchups.

Oh yeah lol, the c.LP into st.LK isn’t an OS it’s a blockstring that puts Cody in the perfect position for a kara throw (LP+LK+HK) and outside the range of a normal throw, so it’s specifically for throw baits and baiting crouch techs.

Packz.

What I doen’t really understand:

There is also the st.LK OS U2. Thats ok, st.LK is not Special cancelable, but why does cr.LP work? xD Is it registered as a chain when the opponent ist blocking? I always thought that U2 will come out even when he blocks the first jab ^^

Anyway… nice OS, I just don’t get the right timing yet ^^ U2 often comes out because I miss the timing  No musclemind yet >.<

c.lp is special cancable but NOT ultra cancable[like any other move btw]. so a c.lp xx mk ruffian would not work since mk ruffian would come out either way. However, it does fine with u2.

Wait, won’t EX criminal upper come out if they block the cr.jab? QCB x PP should get priority over a chain, and cr.jab is cancelable…? (In my tests just now, I had a hard time getting EX CU not to come out if they just blocked the jab)

st.LK OS U2 seems to work, though, but it’s harder because you have to input a standing normal.
