Checking it out now…
defenseless
I have come to the realization that my defense with cody is sub par. Particularly on cross-ups. I can handle myself mostly with teching and FADC but cody’s walk and wake-up are so slow that I can’t get away sometimes. what is a good option for dealing with cross-ups besides just blocking? Is dashing a good option? or the short ruffian kick perhaps? I’m just not as fast on a pad.
And while I’m at it, is b+mp, s. hp, or s. hk the best anti-air?
You can use cr.mk against non-wakeup cross-ups. Codys forward dash looks like a good option in theory but I always forget to try it in a real match.
And if you have good reaction or anticipate a jump-in use HK ruffian as anti-air because you can get more damage out of it(mk ruffian, FADC…)
Non-wakeup Crossups, after a blockstring they jump to you…
cr.mk is great (you move out of the crossup zone and sometimes with enough time to even punish them).
Jump up + hp is surprisingly good.
Your anti-airs should be b+mp if they will land close to you, or s.hk if they land a bit ahead…
…BUT if you have good reaction or anticipate a jump-in, do as KenZerg say, and use HK ruffian and combo with mk rufian… or hk rufian FADC, ex criminal upper, or whatever.
Thanks. Good info indeed. I have will ne trying out everything including the dash later on. I hear you on the anti-air moves. I’ve usd so many AAs so I’m not used to them. And most of the time to avoid cross-ups i’ll just jump any direction and use HK HP or LP. shrugs I guess Cody is just free on wake-up. Gotta adjust to that. Holla!
I’ve finally finished part 2 of my advanced Cody guide you guys check it out tell me what you think.
I’ll also be starting the matchup guides for every character, using my own experience against some of the best UK players, so keep track for that as well.
People are throwing me out of my safe jump attempts. Am I doing the safe jump incorrectly or is this all just part of the safe jump mix up game?
What is your “safe jump” setup?
If you “safe jump” you should not be throwable by normal throws (you can tech it). It seems that your jumping attack doesnt hit them, and they are therefore not in blockstun. they simply throw you out of your landing recovery.
if they backdash or reversal you, you should either hit them or be ready to block/tech in time. (some exceptions against some faster reversals)
So far, I’m just trying to do the back throw, hold diag forward then j.hk. Maybe I’m throwing out the j.hk too late…?
that is most likely the case.
Ya, I just got finished playing for about an hour and a half and I got it down. I thought they needed to be really late but I was landing before the active frames started, I think.
I just realized how important it is to mix up his knockdown game and I’m also more fully utilizing his Bingo punch, which is the aboslute shit. I pretty much have hp charged all the time. Ring finger is just always sitting on hp.
Question: Is it always wise to be buffering mk ruffkick off c.lk when poking?
Question: What are his best air-to-air moves?
Man this guy is so fun to use once you get a solid feel for him.
c.lk buffer into mk ruffian is only viable as “counter” poke. you don’t want to use it in reach of the opponent when he’s blocking. but yes, it’s his best and rather only option. the other one being ex ruffian, costing a bar. however it scores a untechable knock down and can be useful sometimes.
his best a2a is j.hk if you jump before your opponent and j.lk as actual a2a move when both jump at the same time. problem is that j.hk hits rather low and there are certain characters that simply jump over its hitbox (e.g chun).
j.lp is another option.
This post has been changed but yours truly because the original had Herp Derp
Everytime i do ex rocks after a lvl. 3 focus…dash in the opponent falls down. Can I not combo ex rocks after a lv3 focus? (And this is on Dudley)
And on that note:
What are the best combos to use after focus crumble? With 0 meter? With 1 meter? 2?
I had that problem at first, its a timing thing. First be sure its a level 3. I used to let go of MP+MK early after a dizzy without realizing it. to fix this I don’t let go of MP+MK and dash immediately after the hit. Ex rocks need to be throw out immediately and can be combod into crouching HP xx whatever, or Standing HP link crouching mp xx whatever in the corner.
This is my go to focus crumple with 1 meter.
If you happen to get a focus crumple on back dash, throw out lp rocks and then mk ruffian. If you have 2 bars of meter after a focus crumple back dash you can lp rocks, ex ruffian, ex CU.
to combo into ex rocks after focus you’ve to be really quick to catch him while he’s still “standing”. if he falls: ex rocks causes jp2 and you can only combo with ex cu and u2 dust afterwards. you can make him fly on purpose however: any normal rock instead. you can then followup with
-f.hk, [ex cu/u2]
-hk ruffian
-mk ruffian
-ex ruffian, [ex cu/u2]
-f.mp (casues reset)
in particular the f.mp reset is a great thing to use when you stun your opponent after a long combo in the corner. a cl.hp will hit him meaty afterwards.
Depending on your execution timing you can vary between 3 combos. all do “kinda similar” damage.
hardest [1 frame link]: cl.mp, c.hp xx hp cu - 298 dmg
mid level [2 frame link]: cl.hp, c.mp xx hp cu - 288 dmg
easy cheesy: c.hp xx hp cu - 260 dmg
the damge difference isn’t THAT big of a deal, and you should rather stick to the one you can do consistently. overall, it nets more damage to do the “easy” one with a success rate of 10/10 as the “hardest” one only 8/10 times.
one meter:
ex rocks, c.hp xx hp cu
ex rocks, f.mp, c.mp xx hp cu
in corner also above mentioned “bnb” punish combos work.
you can also do c.hp, c.mp xx hk ruffian, mk ruffian / hk ruffian or ex cu due to hk ruffians juggle properties (this is possible,´due to hk ruffians juggle properties and the timing it hits. it’s one of his trials aswell, so be sure to check it up).
if you want to punish a normal whiffed move and don’t have time to close in for a cl. attack just use c.hp xx hp cu, c.mp xx hp cu or c.lk xx hp cu. depending on the time window and range you’re standing away.
with 2 meters:
for punishes it would be normal bnb’s ending in HK ruffian FADC into [ascending by damage]
- f.mp (reset)
- hk ruffian
- f.hk
- nj.hp
- ex ruffian / mk ruffian / lvl 1 zonk
- lvl 2 zonk
- lvl 3 zonk
- u1
with u2 you can followup f.hk (only if it kills them tho because it’s madly punishable)
with 3 meter f.hk, ex cu becomes your best option.
for 4 meter ex ruffian, ex cu
I am trying to learn how to FADC. What is the easiest combo with Cody that can teach me how to effectively FADC?
highkick ruffian, fadc, crack kick, excu.
you can hit the ruffiankick as an anti air or from a combo if they are standing. if they are crouching you have to combo from a standing or crouching highpunch(these 2 punches make crouching opponents stand on hit) or the highkick ruffian will miss.
gl & hf
Thanks for the help
I’ll try that out and let you know how it goes or come back for more!
When I FADC do I have to immediately dash afterwards to continue the combo?
