How do you deal with Fireballs with cody?

Cody has 10 ways to deal with projectiles.

  1. Focus Absorb.
  2. Tornado from Criminal Upper negates non EX projectiles. EX Tornados kills EX projectiles.
  3. Bad Stone.
  4. Bad Spray.
  5. cr.mk slide(tricky timing, must activate when the fireball is like 2 character lengths infront of you)
  6. Zonk Knuckle through them.
  7. Jump over.
  8. Ultra 2’s Sand negates them.
  9. Ultra 1 Passes through at startup.
  10. EX Ruffian passes through during active frames.

Much thanks for this thread, kaworu. I used to it finally start mess around with Cody yesterday and I think he really clicks for me.

His links are ridiculously easy, his AA options are way too good unless he’s knocked down and pretty much everything he has armor breaks. On top of that, the knife is what Vega’s claw should be. The knife also makes Cody mirrors, which I just had two hours straight of.

I’m still going to try to give all the other characters a try like I intended, but I think I’m in love.

Does Cody require a certain pinpoint execution to him?
He has options but i am trying to use him and get shut down by balrog or a character with strong rush down.
am i misunderstanding Cody’s gameplan?

Cody has extremely high stun combos. A simple jump-in roundhouse into cr.Fierce xx fr.CU does 318 damage and 576 stun! When they’re stunned one of the best combos you can do for 1 EX bar and no revenge guage is to dash in when they’re dizzied lvl3 FA, dash in, EX stones, cr. fierce, fr. criminal upper. EX stones are great because it’s a 2-hit move that doesn’t knock down and the recovery is so low such that you can combo during it’s hitstun if you’re at point blank. Cody’s normals are also pretty awesome. His far standing roundhouse punch does 110 damage and 200 stun and has omgwtf awesome range, borderline broken(hits from 1.5 squares away in training mode).

His crack kick(forward roundhouse) hits from almost 2 squares away and whiffs on crouching which is makes it ideal against Guiles and Balrogs for nailing an overhead or whatever.

Doesn’t damage scaling kinda kill that combo’s efficiency? You’re putting three relatively low-damage moves in front of the most damaging ones (cr.fierce xx f.cu), and that’s AFTER you’ve put them in hitstun with however many hits. Damage scaling doesn’t reset on hitstun, so you’re technically continuing a combo.

From what I’ve gathered, combos on hitstun need to be few and hard hits to get the most damage out of them. I usually go for jumpin (or neutral jump if I can get close enough quick) fierce punch into cr.fierce xx f.cu.

Level 3 Focus-> Dash in-> EX Stones-> cr. Fierce xx fierce CU does 414 damage, that’s like an Ultra. Even if you do it as a normal combo, that kind of damage is pretty epic for only 1 stock.

Cody can cancel bad stone from most of his crouching normals but due to the mega slow startup of badstone, it won’t combo. If Cody could combo into badstone from a normal like any other projectile Cody would be God Tier because:
Level 3 Focus-> Dash in-> cr. fierce xx EX Stones-> cr. Fierce xx fierce CU would do 990 stun and 70% of their HP bar. (Try it in Training mode with No Block on) with Block on you’d have to get lucky, but you can still do this combo just without the cr. fierce before the EX stones.

Well that shit would be scaled

LP CU helps alot. Using the MP and HP versions might be a good way to shut down fire balls and stop follow up attacks like chun li doing a far standing HP or hazansho or whatever its called and it builds up meter. I was guna give up on cody but I feel I should give him a chances still :stuck_out_tongue: I beat a nice ranked rose online using this.

keep the pressing against shotos?!

I am really scare to press a shotos and sagat. Often i eat a dragon punch into my pressing. I understand why, its beacause i put a dead time between my move. But that i want is to frametrap. But i eat DP and DP again. I understand that i suck a t it. Can you lend me some advice?
I often do : cr.lp, cr.lp, (time) cr.MP
I stop jump in beacause i eat throw or DP: i do jump HK, st.HP but they DP between the HK and HP and when i do jump in MK, st.MP i eat the same thing.

I am noob at SF (capcom game) i always play KOF but it doesnt exist anymore. So its very frustrating and odd to play SSF4 coz i have an impression that i cant attack freely.

Your English is weird, but this much is clear: Frametrapping only works against normals without invincibility. If you leave any gap in your combos against a reversal-masher, they will smack you out of it.

If you notice them DPing every time you attempt a combo, stop your combo midway, and punish that DP with a nice CR.HPxxH.Criminal Upper.

lk Super has masses of invincibility and can punish projectiles easily.

What option selects does Cody have for e.g. c.lp (or whatever) to stop backdashers?
E.g. Cammy for example can c.lp -> ultra to catch backdash

zonk seems like good tool to stop backdashing.

Is there any info on Frame Traps into especial of normals with Cody?

I can’t link normals into combos (or i don’t bother to practice), so i do simple ones like cr.hp xx hp CU. This is enough to play vs my local friends, so i won’t link if my friends don’t link, we all play in a lower level, but we all have fun.

Anyway, the point is that i think that one of my weapons with Cody should be frame traps if i could build some up…
…but besides reading the frame data and knowing that close.mp is +4 on block and f+mp is +6 on hit, i don’t know what normal or move to set up and mixup to prepare a frame trap for my friends.

Maybe close.mp into standing.lk (3 frames startup) or into ex Criminal Upper (some invulnerability) or something like that. I need help.

I am working my game to stop doing stupid things and bad habits… (like jumping less), but with Cody I am using a lot (and I mean it) of bingo punches on reaction.
Wake up = ex bingo
Missed a link = bingo
Pressed a button = bingo
With bad players it hits a lot, but I know that I am gonna be punished against decent players.
Someone doing the same thing ?
