Chun-li Q&A: Ask simple questions here!

Good stuff, just trying to understand the Ultra mechanic perfectly so I’m not outsmarted during a match. I’m finding it impossible to land Ultra’s that way on Guiles and other Chuns though.

When I played Bahn I landed Ultra through projectile once … But all my subsequent attempts failed. Bahn, what were you doing different?

On Guile’s, a lot of them like to Sonic Boom on your wakeup (much like Shotos fireball you), take advantage with a wake up Ultra. Also, try planing yourself 3/4 or mid screen and crouch block. Use c.HP to move slightly forward and bait a SB then Ultra

For Chun’s if they are s.hp and s.hk poke happy, punish a whiffed one with a Tenshyo Kyaku. B+MK has great range and might clip them. If you are near a corner, its a free set up into an Ultra. If not, its got decent stun.

Oh no, I can set up Ultra through combos easily. I meant landing Ultra on Guiles and Chuns by baiting projectiles.

It seems they recover way too fast.

Guile’s SB recovers very fast compared to regular shotos. You can catch shotos and Sagat full screen if you Ultra quick enough so that their hands are still out from throwing the fireball (I think they can FADC and be safe if they have enough meter and expect it though).

With Guile it’s more practical to close the distance first. She most likely won’t get to him before he’s able to block if you’re too far away.

I’m using the xbox controller until I find a decent stick. I also prefer the thumbstick to the Dpad (even the modded Dpad), especially if I’m playing a charge character like Chun.

The biggest drawback of the Thumbstick, I find, it that the gate for it is needlessly huge. Just titlting the the stick forward the slightest bit will make you jump, but in the heat of battle I’m often finding myself moving the stick all the way to top, and that’s the case for all the directions. I’ve been thinking of an easy way to modify the thumbstick gate to make smaller, just big enough so that the directional input goes through when the stick hits the gate. Granted, the controller will probably be only used for SF4/fighters.

Sorry, just thinkin out loud I guess.

Question; what’s the best time to use the headstomps? I sometimes forget I have this move :frowning:

Hit it right on the head…

If you’re planning to punish Guile SB’s - they HAVE to be done on reaction; EX booms especially because his recovery is so fast. His frame recovery on the standard one is somewhat higher – but he doesn’t remain in that state nearly as long as Ryu/Ken/Akuma. So unless you’re literally right on top of Guile as you stated – they’ll have plenty of time to block, resulting in free damage during Chun’s recovery.

I would say the X-box Joystick is FAR better than the pad. I just got an arcade stick a few days ago though and am having a semi-rough time adjusting to it - might take a week or two.

I would like to see someone beat C. Vipers hard trials using the 360 D-pad - if you ask me she has the hardest ones in the game and doing it on that shitty pad would be crazy.

when i was playing on 360 controllers i ALWAYS played on the analog.

hell give it a squre gate and sanwa might have some competition…

Yeah seriously, I have never used the D-pad. I feel right at home with the analog.

And it would change my gameplay a great deal if it could have a Square gate … Omg, what I would be able to pull off on reaction.

Ok so as I said above I just got my 1st arcade stick, I feel really sluggish when I play now since I am so used to a pad. Mostly having trouble with dashing on reaction (no idea why), and also with inputs - guess I am not used to having to move my entire hand. I almost feel my skill level was rolled back to a month ago haha.

Any way I just was thinking about loud and wanted to ask if anyone else had a story similar to this one, and if so how long did the adjustment take? I always seem to get pissed at myself over things like this.

Took me roughly about 1-2 weeks to get used to from standard Xbox360 pad to stick. Will need more so that my ultra doesn’t end up jumping forward or backward. A matter of practice and getting used to. I do find harder to play shotos though. for instance, I can’t ultra when I am on the left side with the stick, but then again I haven’t been playing with shotos for some time now. Except unlocking some titles.

Once you get the feeling on where to put your fingers (more or less), you can start using all punches and kicks. Previously on Pads, I had to put weak and strong punches close to my fingers and the triggers were the middle.

I recently made the transition from pad to stick, so I’m familiar with how you feel. I’m very comfortable using my thumbs for fighting games. Dashing is still one of my most noticeable problems, as well as feeling like every movement I make is 5x exaggerated on the joystick.

You’ll get comfortable with the buttons. There’s so much more potential there than with a controller. It just takes getting comfortable with how the buttons are laid out.

For joystick dashes, I try to keep in mind that the stick needs to go back into neutral so I can’t just go TAPTAP really fast. I try to think of it as a heart beat rhythm – thu- thump. What also might help is getting f+mk+mp - f as your dash input as it tends to fix my problem of accidentally walking and can be just as fast.

Q: What situation is Chun’s s.HK useful in besides as a “jumping snipe” move?

  • It can stop Rog’s special punches (not Ex obviously)

  • Great mid-range poke

  • Keeps the distance against opponents by stopping their advances

Except against Zangief, I don’t even try and use it to hit people out of the air. For Zangief I might be tempted to punish lariat with it, but I find sweep is safer for me… If I miss-time it, it’s not going to trade and give the Zangief player a free knockdown.

It has great aerial range, but the recovery is just terrible. As a ground based poke, s.fp and especially s.mp are better.

That said, I have seen other Chun-Li’s use it for the following:-

  • s.cl.hk->hasan shu… The close standing hk makes the opponent stand up in blockstun, which makes it a little confusing to block the hasan shu. Once your opponent gets used to seeing it, it becomes less effective.
  • s.cl.hk->ex.legs->ex.legs… A decent punish combo, I don’t use it because getting it consistently on a pad seems beyond my capabilities.

There are a lot of players that like to do random FAs and then dash back or forward, so I was thinking…can you ultra them as soon as they start to charge the FA and be sure that they won’t be able to block or escape even if they dash as soon as the ultra zoom-in ends?

Also I have a question that doesn’t belong here but none answered me in the General FAQs thread so I’ll ask to you, fellow Chun Li players :stuck_out_tongue:
As you can see from my location I’m italian and I don’t understand what you exactly mean when you talk about shenanigans, gimmicks and gimmick characters. Translating the words in italian doesn’t make much sense so I’d be better if you could explain me with some examples too. Thank you in advance

Shenanigans are like, tricks… mischievous tactics. For street fighter it means using some move, or series of moves in an unexpected way. Stomps as an instant overhead is the first one that springs to mind… but, for example Dan has a Shenanigan in that he can cancel his Super-taunt into his ultra; which is completely unexpected the first time you see it.

Gimmicks are a reliance on something simple; So, a gimmicky Zangief player might be someone who just abuses ‘PPP’ lariat for all it’s worth… or they might just keep empty jumping at you until they get close enough to SPD. Just because its a ‘gimmick,’ or simple tactic, doesn’t mean it can’t be effective.

I used to think ultra would be a good way to punish focus attacks whether they dash or not, but I find that the timing is a bit annoying. When a character backdashes they spend some of the frames off the ground, so if you hit them with ultra only the first two kicks will land and they will be knocked away… unless they are in the corner. I suppose it could be more or less effective depending on character. Sagat for instance has a very slow backdash.

Thank you very much, you explanation couldn’t be more clear
I can finally use those words too

Q: What is ChunLi’s Kara and is it any good?
