Chun-li Q&A: Ask simple questions here!

Actually, it’s probably the opponent switching sides during the EX SBK, causing your back charge to be reset.

Azrael, what do you think of the end of this video?

http://zoome.jp/game-sakura/diary/19/

Last match is Chun vs Zangief, it takes a long time to buffer.

Chun was in a losing situation.

Nuki does dash up jabs into string, and a hasan-shu…very risky. Do you think he knew the player wasn’t as good? Or did he just take the chance because there was a 3rd round left? I do believe top Giefs can SPD things on reaction, maybe Nuki was just certain that the particular Gief wasn’t on that level.

So like … I’ve seen certain Chun players use this early stomp -> j.LK crossup but I’m really starting to question it’s usefulness.

  1. It isn’t a combo.
  2. The crossup is blatantly obvious, and can consequently be blocked with ease.
  3. It’s way too situational, and is only useful imo, to get out of a corner.

So why do some people love using this risky move with such little pay off?

how do u kikoken cancel -> fa -> dash forward to b.mk -> d.mk -> u.mk as a combo?

i can only get from kikoken to fa as a 2 hit combo. but i seen videos where they link the whole thing together. i tried different timin for the fa… b4 white flash i can hit the fa than dash forward but i cant connect the b.mk b4 or after the white flash. in those videos it connects both b4 white flash and after white flash.

how would u do this?

The Gief seemed decent enough. How old is this video though? Nuki doesn’t have that many BP so it seems like its kinda old.

Not to say I’m a top-level Chun player or anything like that, but IMHO Nuki took the fight to Gief way more than he should have.

Because Gief players are so used to you running away the entire match, you can surprise them by taking the fight to them sometimes. If the Gief player isn’t good at standing 360’s, then basically Gief just becomes a big slow target in which you can attack as you like. The problem here is that if you start doing stuff that puts him in block or hit stun, if the Gief player starts spamming 360’s and you don’t keep up the stun, you pay for it.

Hasan Shu is actually somewhat underrated against Gief. The best way to use it is to have the very edge of Chun’s hitbox just make contact with the very edge of Gief’s. Many Gief’s want to stay in crouch for the deep lariat, or low pokes - so HS can beat them in the instant they have to think about either high blocking or crouch lariat.

Unrelated to the video, but regarding EX Legs on Gief’s Backfist FADC - If Gief hits her at the maximum range of the move, he can dash out of range of the EX Legs and you will whiff. If the move hits deeper, you can tag him with EX Legs and he won’t be able to recover in time. So, its important to know the range at which you can successfully EX Legs him.

But whatever range he does the blocked Backfist FADC at, you CAN reveral ultra him. If you have meter and charge and you block a Backfist, be ready to ultra immediately.

Pop quiz, Chun hotshots.

Chun vs Ryu, final round. Chun has NO life left, chip damage anything will kill her. Ryu has maybe 35-40% life; one combo will NOT kill him, but your ultra will. Ryu has more than enough health to still be able to use FA. Chun has one bar of super meter, Ryu has two. You’re both in the middle of the screen, full-screen apart.

This is a bad situation. You’re odds of winning the match are extremely low. Your best shot is going to be landing the ultra somehow. But the Ryu player is good, he’s not going to throw a random fireball while you are obviously sitting on charge. But all he needs to do is throw some kind of fireball or any special into you and you die.

You decide that with only one bar of meter, you pretty much have to hit the ultra here. Your best bet will be to bait out a fireball from Ryu that you can ultra through. This Ryu isn’t going to throw any dumb fireballs when you are sitting on charge. So…how? I can think of three possible ways.

Note that there’s no “right” answer here, this is just a bad situation for Chun and winning will be a long shot. But not impossible…

I’ll leave more time before I post my answer this time so more people can take a stab at it.

ok this has been confusing me for some time

can you do a df+rh x-up w/out any punishment?

when and when can’t htey punish you.

Yay time to fail a quiz

Question? Does he have any Super bar? If not, Id throw a few jab kikokens and see how he reacts. Not only does this let me read him but hopefully I can start building towards another bar of Ex should I need it. If he tries jumping over it, Id meet him in the air with a target combo > headstomp x3, move him closer to the edge of the stage.

Id back up so I dont eat a wake up move and zone him some more with kikokens, and possibly look to land Ex SBK > Ultra if he jumps in.

Idk, bad choices but then again she wouldnt have many in this situation

First I’d check (as always in a situation like this) if they will throw a fireball from full screen. The only good way for me to test without worry for speed and avoid getting hit is to throw a kikoken first. Maybe neutral jump, kikoken, charge instantly then dash ultra the next one, but who knows.

Full screen, depending on the fireball, if I see an EX or fierce out I’ll jump over it. It puts me in range for hasan-shu. I will use that 1 meter to EX hasan-shu if I get the opportunity.

The way I mix up in this situation, is to maybe whiff something then back dash if I hit with EX hasan-shu. He’s only one hit away for killing, and that puts me at the risk of dying if I go for anything, needlessly to say. So back dashing either baits out his uppercut, and I get to throw him and mix up again, maybe attempting to cross up short and then back dash this time for the same situation but added pressure.

Ok if I miss my dash ultra and he doesn’t throw anything, I’ll back dash to see if he fireballed, then neutral jump accordingly. The next time I’ll do it, I’ll jump over and hit him with j.forward into sweep. If he does nothing in this situation, I’ll walk up and try to hasan-shu react if he tries to fireball me for walking. EX can be a bit rough to react to, so I’ll keep my distance around max RH hasan-shu range.

I will throw out a roundhouse maybe if I feel like it, or walk up strong if I’m feeling lucky (he can fireball and trade, but hopefully I scared him enough not to throw one out). Worst case scenario, I will hopefully walk him to the corner.

He may jump as it gives him a good chance of at least trading. I’ll go for my st.forward first, unless he’s too close, then I’ll use cr.strong. The reason I don’t wanna use cr.strong first is because jump in short beats it :/.

I can’t really think of how to get the full ultra to hit outside of a juggle. Maybe jump over a fireball from full screen (not a jab one because he may be able to roundhouse)…and then start charging + walk back ultra. Other than dash up ultra, I won’t rely on this to win, especially if he lets me know he’s going to sit on the clock to win.

My Answer

Spoiler

ideally speaking, we want to bait out a fireball, correct? i’ve got one idea, but it probably isn’t too feasible.

start charging focus attack, and then see what ryu is going to do. hopefully, he’ll get itchy and throw out an EX fireball, and then chun can cancel into either forward or back dash ultra (depending on how far away ryu is). i’m sure regular hadouken has enough delay that you easily have enough time to do the ultra, but i’m not too sure about EX hadouken.

I don’t think that answer is feasible because you don’t have enough life to even FA an attack. The Ryu player would see the ultra coming.

I still can’t think of an answer. If I was a Ryu player, I would sit on my lead completely and it would be extremely difficult for the Chun to do anything without getting hit by at least one attack/special.

doh, i knew i should’ve looked over Az’s post again before i replied.

You can fish for fireballs if ryu is playing defensive. Say he’s sitting back throwing hadukens, what he’s fishing for is for you to FA or throw a Kikoken such that his ex fireball will go through it. You pretty much have to guess when he’ll throw it

I think I will fail this quiz but what the hell…

you could walk towards him and hope he will throw a fireball since he knows you are not charging back. When this happens Hasan Shu over his Fireball and link it into C. Short -> Ex Legs -> Ultra. Than again he is half screen so he might just fly out of the Ultra before it reaches the corner.

Another theory is using jab kikoken to bait out a Ex Fireball, if you pre charge your ultra after the Kikoken you might have enough time to get it off before his ex Fireball hits you. I would not go for such a gamble though in tight situation like this one.

There’s just no winning this.

I’ll spam jab kikoken and hope to do better in round 2.

And look up Never Give Up on youtube to see just why never should

I feel the best response under those circumstances would be to utilize the focus attack to bait him into throwing the fb. I’d also make sure that I did this at a relatively safe distance so that I could cancel the focus. This setup also allows you to retain your charge and attempt a fwd dash ultra.

The only problem with this is he MIGHT execute an EX which unfortunately the focus would end up losing out to.

Jumping is futile cuz that’s just creating an easy opportunity to do DP -> EX or something destructive. A safe jump could work, but that also depends on distance.

Because I typically like to be ballsy, I’d probably just start walking up to him because in all likelihood, he’s not expecting me to commit suicide and would surely respond with a projectile kill. At that moment you could react with a hazan shu.

A couple of things to consider while you ponder this predicament.

The Ryu knows about dash ultra and will not throw full-screen fireballs unless he believes you are not sitting on charge. If you are walking forward, he will not throw a fireball you can easily Hasan Shu over. He will most likely just poke with C.MK or go into random FA stances. If you get in close, rather than DP he will probably just throw an EX Hadouken into your face at point-blank range.

Again, final round with NO life left. You lose here, you lose the match. You eat any normal attack, or block any special attack and you are dead.

While it is possible to try and forget about the ultra and slowly comeback on your own, remember that Chun only has enough meter for ONE B&B combo, that will not kill and will not lead to ultra juggle. Also consider that if you burn your meter on EX Legs, you will NOT have EX SBK available for anti-air. Ryu could just FA dash forward and jump-in - your anti-airs are all very risky, and if you block he lands, DP’s, and wins the match. In this particular scenario, you’ve accessed the situation and decided that going for the ultra is your best bet at victory.

So basically, you want to make the Ryu player think that you are in a spot where 1. you can’t Hasan Shu or jump over an EX Hadouken and 2. you don’t have charge built.

I was actually in this situation last weekend during casual fights before an SBO qualifier. I won the match by baiting out the EX Hadouken and ultra’ing through it.

How I think you baited him

[details=Spoiler] - Well, to try and better my chances at this thing…I’ll add that you may have tried neutral jump, focus stance hold, dash ultra from full screen.

  • Or like the one I said earlier…jumped over a fierce/EX fireball full screen, jumped over meaning forward…held your charge, took a step back, ultra.

  • You may have traded a few kikokens with regular fireballs, then traded an EX with his EX, then dash ultra.

  • Hasan-shu over a fireball, and then ultra’d through the next if he hesitated. Not likely, but it’s a while guess.

  • Or you tagged his focus with an excellent ultra in footsie range.

[/details]

Wow, no clue how you baited a Hadoken but awesome job.

I personally would have tried to get him in mid FA stance and then Ultra. It’s not very easy to bait a Hadoken in this situation … Some Ryus will just flat out not throw one but instead move in closer for the kill.
