Chun Li General Thread: Blue Jade

Just my thoughts, but I feel each character sub forum needs sections devoted to:
Normals/FrameTraps/Combos (Normals for best pokes and punishes against opponents, combos for well duh)
Critical Art uses outside of combos
V-Reversals - everything it can negate per character, from normal, specials, CAs etc.,
V-Trigger exclusive thread, especially because Chun’s is so unique
Training thread - anyone who wants and needs to get together with other players to practice.

I’ve never successfully had that happen. She can connect grounded ex legs and super though.

Absolutely beautiful, to the Queen of Fighting Games

And:

  • Chun-Li video thread
  • Critique my Chun thread
  • Police Reports: Chun-Li Matchup thread

I watched a lot of videos of Chun Li in the previous betas, and she seemed like a really well-balanced character, with a lot of tools for poking and rushdown. From what I’ve seen of the most recent beta, she seemed to get nerfed in a way which made her pokes really predictable, and her rushdown pressure a lot harder to keep up, especially since her throw range got really shortened.

So since I can’t throw from the range most of my offensive pressure comes from, how can I keep my poke game from getting stale? Won’t my opponent just hit crouch block and punish me every time?

We’re going to need an information desk for Q&A.

Chun walks fast, so her tic throw game is still viable despite the nerf. Besides, landing a throw isn’t always what’s important, sometimes it’s just the threat of landing it. The most basic way of applying this concept is what some people refer to as the “shimmy,” an example of which would be as follows;

Say you finally get in on your opponent and do low jab, strong to hit confirm, but you see it’s blocked, so you take a step toward them. This threatens throw, but you don’t want to throw (you want to open them up to bigger damage), so you immediately take a step back and hit b+fierce. This results in either a crush counter if they tried to tech your fake throw, or it just puts them back into blockstun with you at advantage (B+fierce is +2 on block) if they didn’t. From there you can then either continue your pressure or fall back to neutral and reset.

Beyond that, Chun’s neutral is very unpredictable. In fact I would hazard to say that the only thing you can really predict from her neutral game is that it’s good and there will be kicks. There are a half dozen different normals she can use and most of them pretty safe (generally 0, -2, -3) in neutral. Even her low roundhouse is pretty safe if you use it properly as a whiff punish or from max range. The key is knowing your buttons, their ranges, and observing your opponent. Does your opp like to jump? Throw in some roundhouses and shorts. Does your opp not crouch much during neutral? Throw in some max range low roundhouses. Does your opp do a lot of crouch normals in neutral (like shoto low fwd)? Throw in the occasional f+rh. That sort of thing. You can also intentionally setup whiff punishes (almost the exact same concept as the shimmy). Walk into your opp’s optimal range to trigger a reaction from them, then back out without doing anything followed immediately by a long normal like low roundhouse to whiff punish the normal you triggered them into sticking out.

The point is, you shouldn’t ever really be in a situation that you would describe as “stale.” I know applying pressure in a very general sense or playing neutral might seem pretty straight forward, but you really have to break it down into little scenarios that branch off into various options, like a Choose Your Own Adventure kind of thing. Sure your opening string might be the same/similar a lot of the time for example (I use low jab, strong as a starter all the god damn time) but once you see all the different paths and branches you can take from it, the world is your oyster.

Character sub forums are up. Already named the matchup thread as per LockM’s request

Awww yeah  :encore:

Alright, character sections are here.

Love the thread names you guys came up with for Chun by the way.

I was just coming in here to say the same thing lol. Props to you guys. Really loving the thread titles

I want to escape but the thigh is pulling me back

Can’t wait to see the plethora of “How do I do instant air Lightning Legs” threads.

Anyone who remembers the Lightning Leg loop threads knows what I’m talking about.

Mr Darklight how do I did slide :looney:

What do you guys think about resetting this thread next Tuesday so its all new information?

A new player coming to this forum a few months from now will read the first 40 pages and be very confused as to why some of the combos, theories, and set ups no longer apply.

Just a suggestion.

Honestly I think you have to be crazy to read the first 40 pages of this. Most of the actual info you would need people have already started to post in other threads or will just re post as they remember them in the other threads. We have a Q and A thread now too so newer people are better off just going HAM with questions than reading 40 pages of stuff from like the freaking Revenge gauge build (which no one here actually played) and Evo builds.

I would suggest not to read the last 40 pages unless you just want some nostalgia trip. In reality most casuals will probably read the first 3 pages, get tired and then just ask some question on the last page that could have been asked in the Q and A thread. That’s most likely how it’ll go.

I hear you, but unless we just like the idea of looking back and seeing ourselves talk and theorize and hype, I don’t see the point in keeping the previous 40 pages. Everything you said is fair, but why NOT get rid of it? A LOT of it isn’t going to be relevant anymore.

At the VERY LEAST, I would suggest to whoever started this thread that they edit the opening post and put at the top of it in big, bold letters “The first __ pages of this thread were made during the pre-release phase of the the game. A lot of it is no longer relevant. To start reading this thread when the game has been released, start at page __”

I personally think it’s pretty self explanatory. Most newer/casual players just aren’t going to take the time to look and will just go to the last page and post what they want. Don’t think they’ll need a heads up for something they probably won’t bother to read any way.

It’s one of those things where it wouldn’t hurt, but it would benefit very few actual people. It’s only 40 pages and SRK threads can go past 1,000 pages I think so it’s really not that much clutter in the grand scheme of things.

Yeah combo thread is pretty much standard fare. Might as well make one.

We are so decked out compared to every other sub forum so far. We got 5 stickies and 4 other threads. Most other threads only got one or 2 stickies or just have the GD thread merged. We’re ready for the World’s Strongest Woman

I like more pratical combos. I made one with viable and simples punish combos until get the game mastered :).
