Chun Li General Thread: Blue Jade

That’s not a big deal. Throws in general are really strong in SF5 and her kara throw range is ridiculous compared to everyone else. Better for balance in the long run imo

I stayed realistic about the idea about it being removed since yes, it was considerably longer than any other kara grab considering her walk speed and buttons. I’ll be messing with the other buttons next time I play the beta to see what the next best option would be.

Has Cammy also lost hers then? I’d be a little salty if Chun lost hers but Cammy didn’t.

Ehhh, they said that, but they say a lot of shit.

Yeah, but he also told Chen that they were worried that it made her too good. It’s annoying she got an important nerf when lots of people felt she was the worst, or one of the worst in the game, but I guess we’ll see.

After playing her its obvious that she’s really solid and just required a bit more neutral work to apply than the other characters. Wasn’t buying her being bad at all.

The kara grab was like a nice icing on the cake that assured she would be strong for a while. If we have to look for a different, smaller ranged kara or just deal with what is there I think we can make it work. She has a good enough walk speed and dash to bully people with throws either way.

Kara throws always seems inconsistent for me anyway.
My inputs will even be correct and sometimes she’d do it, sometimes she wouldn’t
It seemed my input will juggle between Lp MP LK and LP LK MP
when it looked like this : > Lp Mp LK
she’d do it but when it was > Lp LK MP she wouldn’t.

any hoo F/B+ Mp, St. Lp xx may be one of her best hit poke/hit confirms in close with current builds doing away with Light to Medium links
It’s a shame they did that. It took away some of the combo versatility, narrowing the gap of creativity and what works.
Might be a nice way to hide charge and throw a kikouken as a footsie poke as well - possible V-skill set up?

Well the reason they took away lights into mediums was because in SFIV most of the hit confirms revolved around that and since jabs were the only attacks that created true block strings there was an overemphasis on those confirms. The game didn’t have may old school CVS2/3S one hit hit confirms. Most things was fishing off lights with overly ranged hit boxes.

In retrospect, it probably wasn’t necessary to do in a game that doesn’t have as strong of defensive options as SFIV, but considering they want the emphasis in the neutral game to center around medium and heavy normals, it works out overall. It just kinda further pushes using your mediums and not defaulting to lights in neutral to fish for combos.

It also further pushes emphasis on creativity in the juggle combo system. Chun Li has more access to juggles than she ever did in SFIV and it seems every character generally has more juggle capability than they did before. The older SF games were much more juggle centric so hopefully the trade off is seeing a lot more interesting juggles.

A Chun player who know how to poke properly with her is hard to beat. I ran into one who was making good use of her medium and heavy normals to counterpoke me, giving my Cammy a hard time.

Xian was trying out Chun-Li in SF5 yesterday [Link because SRK auto embeds twitch vods and it’s weird]

Can’t watch Xian archives, and no way i’m paying

Gotta wait for the youtube video then

I’m kind of upset about the kara throw being removed because I went through the entirety of SF4 without one and I was looking forward to it. Capcom killing dreams over here.

I played Chun a couple of weeks ago and I’m glad I was wrong about her V-Trigger. It initially looked like the weakest but now it looks like the strongest one in the game so far. Her combo potential went through the roof with it activated and it was fun juggling and connecting shit for days. My mind hasn’t changed about regular Chun though. She still feels REALLY gimped to me, and now if lights to mediums are gone in the new build, her combos seem nearly non-existent. Her pokes are alright, but the startup on some of them are just too long.

I dunno. it’s very hard for me to judge her right now. She feels very 3rd strike ish, but in that game meter was easy to get and her super was very damaging. In SFV, you’re going to be blowing a lot of meter on Ex moves to even do any damage since her base damage is awful, so I can’t imagine landing her super often at all. It’s starting to seem like Chun’s powerful V-trigger is what’s really holding back her regular version. Capcom is afraid of making that version better since her V-trigger kinda puts her over the top. Even so, the two versions don’t seem balanced right. Both versions should compliment one another, but as of now I think regular Chun is not where she needs to be, while V-trigger Chun could probably afford to lose a few perks so her regular version could be a bit better design wise. I just don’t feel like I’m playing a complete Chun unless her V-trigger is activated. I can’t say the same when I play as Nash and Cammy. Even without their V-triggers activated, they felt fine and complete, with V-trigger activation just being a nice bonus. With Chun, it feels like a NECESSITY for her to compete.

Her V-Skill also needs an overhaul. There’s no way anyone is gonna be able to fill their V-gauge up by relying on that to actually hit. Chun practically HAS to take a beatdown for it to be full, and with her low health, that’s just not fair. They need to find some other way for her V-skill to build her gauge, cause it’s current application isn’t working well.

Anyway, those are just my initial thoughts. I’m not playing the beta anymore though. I’m just going to wait till the actual game drops, cause I don’t want to get used to anything that may or may not be there when the game is really finalized. I’m already pissed about the apparent removal of her kara throw.

It’s supposed to be hard to judge her. The game is in a beta and won’t actually release or have a solid tournament meta for another year and a half. Everything is just theory at this point.

So far she seems a lot like a less OP 3S Chun. That’s pretty much how Chun was in 3S. Didn’t really have any combos and just poked you until she got meter (or in this case V Trigger). She also had the very unfair advantage of having better normals than every other character in the game which she luckily doesn’t have in this game. That’s just how Capcom built the character. They wanted her to be her traditional mid range, hit confirm lacking self until the V Trigger lets her combo off any and everything. Having this kind of polarizing play is weird for SF, but very common for how characters work in KI.

I mean the grass is always greener on the other side I guess. You can see other people saying that Nash doesn’t look that good at all. Cammy seems to be generally thought of as solid, but you never know what could come up for her either.

As far as the V Skill goes, they nerfed V Skill Gauge building seemingly all around. Ryu barely gets any V Gauge when he lands a parry now.

Kara throws are reportedly now removed from all characters, so at least you’ll be balanced in having the same shitty throw range as everyone else LOL.

At least we have more then one type of v reversal. I’m wondering how well our kick reversal will be.

I’m hoping they change the motion of our projectile. I’d like it if we could use it like a semi anti fireball and a poke option itself. If the changes are true we can’t do cr.jab st.jab into st.medium anymore but we can still do our lights into legs.

Wish her v skill was a command and hazanshu was her v skill , would make it reliable and you could actually land it outside a jump in

i think it would be cool if we could control the distance of how far her v-skill goes similar to necalli’s.

Well, you can. Not exactly like Necalli but you can use air Hyakuretsukyaku to stop the movement. I don’t know how safe it is though.

Tried to get some chun li streaming action tonight. But unfortunately my capture device took a shit. Was freezing every 10 seconds. couldn’t even get a single match recorded let alone live stream. New capture card is on the way but the stress test will be over before I get a chance to stream again.

so i played for about 2 hours and chun li feels really strong. She doesn’t really need her v trigger. i feel like its icing on the cake for her. I’ve been winning some very awesome footsie battles today. Too bad some people lag switch during a beta.
